Splenic marginal zone lymphoma: A prognostic model for clinical use
2006
The Integruppo Italiano Linfomi (IIL) carried out a study to assess the outcomes of splenic marginal zone lymphoma and to identify prognostic factors in 309 patients. The 5-year cause-specific survival (CSS) rate was 76%. In univariate analysis, the parameters predictive of shorter CSS were hemoglobin levels below 12 g/dL (P < .001), albumin levels below 3.5 g/dL (P = .001), International Prognostic Index (IPI) scores of 2 to 3 (P < .001), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels above normal (P < .001), age older than 60 years (P = .01), platelet counts below 100 000/μL (P = .04), HbsAg-positivity (P = .01), and no splenectomy at diagnosis (P = .006). Values that maintained a negative influence …
Hepatic vein tumor thrombosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: Prevalence and clinical significance.
2021
Abstract Background There is strong evidence that portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) is associated with poor survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, data regarding the clinical significance of hepatic vein tumor thrombosis (HVTT) is rare, particularly in Western patients. Objective To determine the HVTT prevalence in a Western patient population and its impact on survival. Methods We included 1310 patients with HCC treated in our tertiary referral center between January 2005 and December 2016. HVTT and PVTT were diagnosed with contrast‐enhanced cross‐sectional imaging. Overall survival (OS) was calculated starting from the initial HCC diagnosis, and in a second s…

An undergraduate thesis training course for faculty reduces variability in student evaluations
2020
Abstract Background The undergraduate thesis evaluation process is one of the most prevalent weak points in universities; the literature indicates the need to orient undergraduate thesis evaluators through specific training initiatives. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the discrepancies between the grades awarded by undergraduate thesis supervisors and by the panel of faculty examiners, and the effect of training targeted to faculty members. Design and methods A cross-sectional study was performed during the 2015–2016 academic year in a Spanish Nursing School. Settings and participants We analyzed the mean grades from undergraduate thesis evaluation rubrics and the effects of…
Quality of School Life in the Finnish Comprehensive School: a comparative view
1996
Abstract The article attempts to answer the questions of how Finnish students experience the quality of school life as a whole and how students’ well‐being and social interaction in the Finnish comprehensive school compare with some other countries on the basis of extensive international comparative data. First, the concept ‘quality of school life’ and the self‐assessment instrument are described. Second, the validity of the instrument is explored. Next, the results of the assessment are first discussed from the national and then from the international perspective, comparing the data collected as a sub‐survey of the IEA Study of Reading Literacy in March 1991. The Finnish school is contrast…
Phytosociological analysis of the Genista sp. pl. garrigues of the Cisto-Lavanduletea and Rosmarinetea officinalis classes in the South-Tyrrhenian ar…
2015
The study reviews the Genista sp. pl. garrigues ascribable to the classes Cisto-Lavanduletea (acidophilous communities on volcanics and quartzarenites) and Rosmarinetea officinalis (basiphilous communities on calcareous and calcareous-dolomite substrates), in the southern territories of the Italo-Tyrrhenian Province. The floristic-synecological characterization of the identified coenoses led to the description and/or redefinition of various new syntaxa. They are distributed in the two new suballiances Calicotomo villosae–Genistenion tyrrhenae and Genisto aristatae–Calicotomenion infestae of the class Cisto- Lavanduletea (Lavanduletalia stoechadis and Calicotomo villosae–Genistion tyrrhenae)…
Education modulates the association of the FTO rs9939609 polymorphism with body mass index and obesity risk in the Mediterranean population
2012
Objective To define whether the rs9939609 FTO (fat mass and obesity associated) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with anthropometric measurements and its modulation by educational level in a Mediterranean population. Methods We studied 3 independent adult samples: a random sample (n = 1580) from the general population (GP), obese hospital patients (OHP) (n = 203) and elderly subjects (n = 1027) with high cardiovascular risk (HCR). Weight and height were directly measured. Education and physical activity (PA) were measured using questionnaires. Results The rs9939609 presented heterogeneous associations with BMI. In the GP, the minor A-allele was significantly associated wit…
DESCRIPTION AND MORPHOMETRICAL VARIABILITY OF A NEW SPECIES OF LIGOPHORUS AND OF LIGOPHORUS CHABAUDI (MONOGENEA: DACTYLOGYRIDAE) ON MUGIL CEPHALUS (T…
2006
A comparative morphological study of specimens of Ligophorus spp. from Mugil cephalus in western Mediterranean and the Black Sea localities has been carried out, indicating the presence of 2 distinct forms, i.e., Ligophorus chabaudi and Ligophorus cephali n. sp. A detailed description of the latter and an up-to-date redescription of L. chabaudi are provided. The existence of these 2 morphological species was additionally supported by principal component analysis based on 19 metric characters of 87 specimens arranged in samples defined by parasite species and geographical locality. The analysis indicated consistent differences between species but not between localities; this pattern was well…
Insular variation in central MediterraneanCrociduraWagler, 1832 (Mammalia, Soricidae)
1990
Morphometric variation of Crocidura mandible in Sicily and surrounding islands (Egadi archipelago, Ustica, Pantelleria and Gozo) was analyzed by principal component and canonical variate analyses in order to integrate recent chromosomal and biochemical observations. Specimens of C. suaveolens and C. leucodon from mainland Italy and of C. russula from Sardinia were used as reference in this analysis. The biometry of the only taxon of shrews living in Sicily is significantly different from the three reference samples. This result, coupled with a recently discovered new karyotype, provides strong evidence for a new Eurasian species, for which the name C. sicula Miller 1901, was chosen. Crocidu…
Anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.
2000
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effects of anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing regimens with dosages ·50 mg·m−2. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional, noncontrolled study was performed to analyze acute vomiting during the first 24 hours in patients treated in a Spanish hospital. The patients received an intravenous combination of drugs (2 doses of metoclopramide 3 mg/kg, dexamethasone 20 mg) as first-choice antiemetic therapy. Intravenous ondansetron 8 mg and dexamethasone 20 mg served as an alternative regimen in patients <30 years old with a history of extrapyramidal manifestations or emesis in previous cycles. Therapeutic …
