Using virtual reality and mood-induction procedures to test products with consumers of ceramic tiles
2013
This work describes a Virtual Reality Environment (VRE), through which users are able to view and test ceramic tile products. Users' virtual interfacing with the products generated emotional experiences that allowed them to feel ''engaged'' with the products. Users could choose between different kinds of products and test them out in order to know how they would look in a real-world context. In the VRE several mood-induction Procedures for inducing relaxation were included. The VRE was tested with respect to its ability to induce relaxation and sense of presence in 26 participants. It was also analyzed the level of satisfaction. Measures included the Visual Analogue Scale, the Self-Assessme…
Antibiotic susceptibility of cocultures in polymicrobial infections such as peri-implantitis or periodontitis: an in vitro model.
2011
Although polymicrobial infections, such as peri-implantitis or periodontitis, were postulated in the literature to be caused by synergistic effects of bacteria, these effects remain unclear looking at antibiotic susceptibility. The aim of this study is to compare the antibiotic susceptibilities of pure cultures and definite cocultures.Laboratory strains of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) (previously Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans), Capnocytophaga ochracea (Co), and Parvimonas micra (Pm) (previously Peptostreptococcus micros) were cultivated under anaerobic conditions, and their susceptibilities to 10 antibiotics (benzylpenicillin G, ampicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin/sulba…
Concise asymmetric synthesis of Linezolid through catalyzed Henry reaction
2013
A new asymmetric synthesis of the antibiotic Linezolid was performed through a copper-catalyzed Henry reaction as the key step. The use of camphor-derived aminopyridine ligands helped to improve the yields of the chiral precursor and to obtain Linezolid in good overall yield and enantiomeric excess.
Tick-borne encephalitis virus, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Borrelia miyamotoi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis …
2018
The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens of medical importance in questing ticks collected from five recreationally used islands along the Norwegian coastline. Furthermore, since coinfection may affect the disease severity, this study aimed to determine the extent of coinfection in individual ticks or co-localization of tick-borne pathogens. In all, 4158 questing Ixodes ricinus ticks were analyzed. For detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), nymphs (3690) were analyzed in pools of ten. To detect Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, B. miyamotoi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, 468 nymphs were analyzed individually…
Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks collected from migratory birds in Latvia.
2014
Migratory birds act as hosts and long-distance vectors for several tick-borne infectious agents. Here, feeding Ixodes ticks were collected from migratory birds during the autumn migration period in Latvia and screened for the presence of epidemiologically important non-viral pathogens. A total of 93 DNA samples of ticks (37 larvae and 56 nymphs) removed from 41 birds (order Passeriformes, 9 species) was tested for Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp. Borrelia burgdorferi DNA was detected in 18% of the tick samples, and a majority of infected ticks were from thrush (Turdus spp.) birds. Among the infected ticks, Borrelia valaisiana was de…
Eribulin (E) and capecitabine (C), a combined treatment schedule in elderly metastatic breast cancer (EMBC): Efficacy and safety evaluation (E&S).
2014
e20513 Background: E mesylate, a nontaxane microtubule dynamics inhibitor, was approved in the U.S in 2010 for the treatment of MBC who have previously received at least 2 MBC chemo regimens, inclu...
A new technique to determine vertical dimension of occlusion from anthropometric measurement of interpupillary distance
2014
Background: A number of techniques are being practiced for the evaluation of VDO, but none of them is scientifically more accurate than other. Each method advocated has its own limitations. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find correlation between vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and interpupillary distance (IPD). Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 dentate subjects comprising of 200 males and 200 females. Anthropometric measurement of VDO was recorded clinically using modified digital vernier caliper. Also, a standardized digital photograph of face was generated from the frontal aspect using a digital camera for the measurement of IPD in mill…
Helicobacter pylori and allergy: Update of research.
2015
Recently a lot of literature has been published about the possible preventive action of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) against allergy. The present review summarizes research data about the association between H. pylori and allergic diseases, as well as discusses possible hypotheses about the preventive action of H. pylori against atopy. There is evidence from observational studies to support a weak inverse association between prevalence of H. pylori infection and allergy. However, confounders like some unidentified socioeconomic factors, antibiotic use and others could bias the association. Although data from cohort studies point to a possible association of H. pylori with some of the all…
Lack of association between proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and human papillomavirus infection.
2005
Purpose To analyze proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in different stages of the disease. Materials and Methods We studied 13 patients with PVL. In 10 patients (76.9%), a lesional biopsy was taken and frozen at −40°C. Four patients were instructed to mouth rinse with sterile sera. The biopsy and rinse samples were analyzed for HPV by PCR. Results We did not detect HPV infection in the PVL tissue or in the oral rinse of any of the 13 patients in any stage of the disease analyzed, neither in oral squamous cell carcinoma nor in the simple hyperkeratosis. Conclusion There was no association between PVL and HPV infection in our patients.
Metabolomics in the diagnosis of sepsis
2014
IntroductionSepsis is an important cause of mortality and morbidityfor preterm and hospitalized newborn babies. Today, nosingle test satisfies the criteria as being the ideal markerfor the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Analysis of theentire metabolome is a promising method for determin-ing metabolic variations correlated with sepsis [1-6].Metabolomics profiling and sepsisWorks on metabolomics concerning sepsis conductedon animals and humans of different ages (newborn andadults) have recently been published and are presentedin Table 1. In septic patients compared to controls (inplasma and urine) it is possible to observe an increaseof metabolites which are part of the oxidative metabo-…
