Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) due to truncation-specifying mutations of apolipoprotein B (apoB), which impair hepatic lipid export in very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles, is associated with fatty liver. In an FHBL-like mouse with the apoB38.9 mutation, fatty liver develops despite reduced hepatic fatty acid synthesis. However, hepatic cholesterol contents in apoB38.9 mice are normal. To induce atherogenesis in mice, a high fat (HF) diet is supplemented with cholic acid (CA), which increases apoB-containing particles and lower apoA-I-containing particles. HF diet without CA increases levels of both HDL and LDL, suggesting that CA may be responsible for the elevation of LDL and lowering of HDL. SummaryNeural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult hippocampus divide infrequently, and the molecules that modulate their quiescence are largely unknown. Here, we show that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is active in hippocampal NSCs, downstream of BMPR-IA. BMPs reversibly diminish proliferation of cultured NSCs while maintaining their undifferentiated state. The spread of HSV of type 1 and 2 was investigated after intraperitoneal, intraplantar and intracerebral infections of resistant (C57/bl) and susceptible (NMRI) mice. The virus spreads after i.p. infection to the spleen and the liver to the same extent in both strains of mice. However, virus is eliminated earlier in resistant mice. Intracerebral infections revealed a peculiar type of resistance of C57/bl mice especially for type 2 of HSV. HSV multiplies in the thymus at the early stage of infection and can be detected in this organ in sick mice of NMRI strain. HSV-1 and 2 can be detected in the spinal cord of C57/bl mice without sickness or death of these animals.

Abstract The effect of feed cycling on compensatory growth was examined in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), held individually at 15 °C. Fish were fasted for 2, 4, 8, or 14 days and then refed until either their relative feed intake differed by less than 10% of fed controls, or the duration of the refeeding period was four times the fasting period. After 80 days, fish fasted for 8 days at a time were smaller than controls, or fish experiencing 2 or 4 days of fasting, while fish fasted for 14 days did not differ from other groups. Introduction The purpose of this study was to provide a translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Polish language version of the pain sensitivity questionnaire (PSQ). The process followed widely accepted guidelines. Methods The translated questionnaire underwent thorough psychometric testing. In total, the data of 144 subjects (mean age 52.53±13 years), who underwent evaluation for lower back pain, were included. Results The exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure, PSQ-moderate and PSQ-minor. The internal consistency was good (Cronbach's α was 0.96).
