One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks Combined with Channel Selection Strategy for Seizure Prediction Using Long-Term Intracranial EEG

2022

Seizure prediction using intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) has attracted an increasing attention during recent years. iEEG signals are commonly recorded in the form of multiple channels. Many previous studies generally used the iEEG signals of all channels to predict seizures, ignoring the consideration of channel selection. In this study, a method of one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN) combined with channel selection strategy was proposed for seizure prediction. First, we used 30-s sliding windows to segment the raw iEEG signals. Then, the 30-s iEEG segments, which were in three channel forms (single channel, channels only from seizure onset or free zone and all c…

One and Two Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks for Seizure Detection Using EEG Signals

2021

Deep learning for the automated detection of epileptic seizures has received much attention during recent years. In this work, one dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) and two dimensional convolutional neural network (2D-CNN) are simultaneously used on electroencephalogram (EEG) data for seizure detection. Firstly, using sliding windows without overlap on raw EEG to obtain the definite one-dimension time EEG segments (1D-T), and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) for 1D-T signals to obtain the two-dimension time-frequency representations (2D-TF). Then, 1D-CNN and 2D-CNN model architectures are used on 1D-T and 2D-TF signals for automatic classification, respectively. Finally, t…

Metaphoric Conceptualization of Social Reality in the Language of News Media

2021

Today, social reality can hardly be viewed as the one-state-one-nationone language ideological framework (Bauman and Briggs, 2003). The modern multilingual and multicultural communities are inclined to examine social reality in a multiple variety of socio-economic and political manifestations and forms. To understand how social reality can be explored through examining certain socio-political processes in a country, the present paper aims at analysing the role of conceptual metaphor in cases when political scandals, involving corruption charges of high-ranking officials in Latvia are considered. For this purpose, the present study has focused on the analysis of selected commentaries that de…

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Brain Networks Related to Creative Thinking

2020

AbstractHuman creative thinking is unique and capable of generating novel and valuable ideas. Recent research has clarified the contribution of different brain networks (default mode network, DN; executive control network; salience network) to creative thinking. However, the effects of brain stimulation on brain networks during creative thinking and on creative performance have not been clarified. The present study was designed to examine the changes in functional connectivity (FC) and effective connectivity (EC) of the large-scale brain network, and the ensuing changes in creative performance, induced by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Fourteen healthy male students underwe…

Reinhart Koselleck’s work on crisis

2016

Reinhart Koselleck's celebrated work on the concept of crisis highlights trends present in the intellectual context of its time and bears a significant impact in contemporary academic trends. The essay analyses Koselleck‟s choices in the study of “crisis” from Antiquity until the 20th century and draws conclusions on methodology, disciplinary trends and socio-political consequences of academic work. peerReviewed

Misunderstanding Situations in Culture and Cultural Care

2017

This article focuses on cultural misunderstanding in care relations, starting from the analysis of the effects misunderstanding causes in the relation between doctor and migrant patient. The Western medical model tends to be based on objective data, which can be diagnosed through more and more precise and detailed techniques, but it excludes human and cultural aspects of subjectivity and relation from care. This exclusion creates distance, which increases when doctor and patient do not share a cultural homogeneity but differ for their language and the way they conceive their body, health, and disease. By showing some clinical examples, this contribution points out how specialized competence…

Children's exploration of the concepts of home and belonging: Capturing views from five European countries.

2021

Understanding one's sense of belonging is a central part of identity formation and self-awareness; feeling safe somewhere, with specific people is identified as a basic human need. This paper explores the ideas of children from three age groups in five different European as they discussed the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’. Findings showed that the children's ideas could be organised into six interrelated aspects: Spatiality, Materiality, Multiplicity, Social Relations, Affect, and Dislocation. Whilst there were differences in the ways that the children conceptualised home across the classes, even the youngest children were able to describe their ideas using metaphors and abstract conce…

The conjoint conceptualization and negotiation of national cultures : qualitative study of discursive culture-concepts, their function and their rela…

2015

The study of stereotypes and stereotyping is as complex and multi-facetted as the social phenomenon itself. From being seen as an erroneous and over-generalizing image in the mind of individuals, to the current perspective that stereotypes have an individual and a social level, are shaped by long-term and short-term contextual factors, and are used for certain purposes, managed and negotiated, stereotypes have been acknowledged as a topic which cannot be studied within one academic discipline alone. This study looks into stereotype use and management during in-group discourse about other national cultures. The data consists of three focus groups consisting of Finnish students who talk about…

Konceptuālisms latviešu literatūrā 21. gadsimtā

2020
