Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) has been used as an experimental model to induce tubulointerstitial damage and interstitial fibrosis. UUO is characterized by cellular proliferation, accumulation of inflammatory cells, and subsequent replacement of renal parenchyma by fibrous tissue. The influx of inflammatory cells into the renal interstitium is mediated by adhesion molecules. In this study, the development of fibrosis in the UUO model of the rat was examined and its relation to the time course of LFA-1 and ICAM-1 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Characterization of human infiltrating and circulating gamma-delta T cells in prostate cancer

Purpose The aim of our study was to prospectively evaluate the distribution of gamma-delta (γδ)1 and γδ2 T cells and their phenotypes in peripheral blood and prostate samples of patients diagnosed with or without prostate cancer (PCa) at prostate biopsy. Materials and methods A consecutive series of 43 outpatients underwent trans-rectal echo-guided prostate biopsy for suspected PCa. Aberrant HH signaling has proved important in the pathogenesis of several solid cancers. Limited in vitro analyses suggested an oncogenic role for HH in renal cell carcinoma. In this explorative study we sought to validate aberrant HH expression in patients with renal cell carcinoma.A tissue microarray was constructed from 140 radical nephrectomy specimens of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Background and purpose Vesicle-associated membrane-protein-associated protein B (VAPB) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident protein participating in ER function, vesicle trafficking, calcium homeostasis and lipid transport. Its N-terminal domain, named MSP, is cleaved and secreted, serving as an extracellular ligand. Cell fusion as a mechanism for the formation of giant cells (Langhans’ type)

The formation of multinuclear giant cells of the Langhans' type in tubulo-interstitial auto-immune nephritis in the rat has been investigated by means of autoradiography. While in the majority of giant cells all nuclei were radiolabeled, in a few both labeled and unlabeled nuclei were present. This latter finding represents strong evidence in favour of the hypothesis that giant cells do not form by endomitotic processes but rather through fusion of certain precursor cells. According to previous studies this precursor cell population consists mainly of epitheloid cells, i.e. modified monocytes.

Angioma-Like Pseudometamorphosis in Wilms' Tumors Subjected to Preoperative Radio- and Chemotherapy

Six Wilms' tumors (stage III-V), which had undergone preoperative irradiation and chemotherapy, were examined histologically. While mesenchymal and differentiated epithelial tumor elements were preserved to a large extent, blastemic tumor structures were almost completely lacking. Instead, pseudoangioma-like structures similar to cavernous hemangioma prevailed. As demonstrated by transitional pictures, the pseudoangioma-like pattern is a result of the fact that blastemic tumor elements are replaced by blood after therapy-induced necrosis and lysis. The clinical advantages of preoperative treatment are briefly discussed, especially for patients with advanced tumors.
