Fresh-cut products from cactus species

Various species of Cactaceae family can serve a source of delicious and healthy fresh foodstuffs. Marketing cacti as ready-to-eat (fresh-cut) products may significantly expand their consumption, on condition that their quality, safety and longevity would answer the market demands. The present work was aimed at studying the storability of fresh-cut products prepared from several edible cactus species and looking for ways to improve their keeping quality. Tratamiento de las ectasias corneales asociadas a LASIK con anillos intraestromales

INTRODUCCIÓN: La ectasia corneal es una de sus complicaciones más graves de la cirugía LASIK. Está asociada a un adelgazamiento y un progresivo incurvamiento corneal y los anillos intracorneales (ICRS) se han propuesto como opción terapéutica debido a que inducen un aplanamiento. OBJETIVO: Evaluar los cambios producidos por los ICRS en pacientes diagnosticados de ectasias secundarias a LASIK. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Es un estudio retrospectivo donde se incluyeron 26 ojos con ectasia post-LASIK los cuales fueron tratados con ICRS tipo Ferrara (AJL, Vitoria). Lignin represents the largest renewable resource of aromatic moieties on earth and harbors a huge potential as a sustainable feedstock for the synthesis of biobased aromatic fine chemicals. Due to the complex, heterogeneous, and robust chemical structure of the biopolymer, the valorization is associated with significant challenges. Vanillin Suppresses Metastatic Potential of Human Cancer Cells through PI3K Inhibition and Decreases Angiogenesis in Vivo

Vanillin, a food flavoring agent, has been shown to suppress cancer cell migration and metastasis in a mouse model, but its mechanism of action is unknown. In this report, we have examined the antimetastatic potential of vanillin and its structurally related compounds, vanillic acid, vanillyl alcohol, and apocynin on hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)-induced migration of human lung cancer cells by the Transwell assay. Vanillin and apocynin could inhibit cell migration, and both compounds selectively inhibited Akt phosphorylation of HGF signaling, without affecting phosphorylation of Met and Erk. Chromone and phenanthrene alkaloids from Dennettia tripetala.

Dennettine, a new 2,6-dimethoxychromone and three known phenanthrene alkaloids (uvariopsine, stephenanthrine and argentinine) in addition to the phenolic and known compound vanillin were isolated from the roots of Dennettia tripetala. Their structures were determined by physical and spectroscopical one dimensional (1D) and 2D-NMR analysis, including heteronuclear multiple bond correlation and nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy.
