Responses of phytoplankton to fish predation and nutrient loading in shallow lakes: a pan-European mesocosm experiment

The impacts of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) and planktivorous fish on phytoplankton composition and biomass were studied in six shallow, macrophyte-dominated lakes across Europe using mesocosm experiments. 2. Phytoplankton biomass was more influenced by nutrients than by densities of planktivorous fish. Nutrient addition resulted in increased algal biomass at all locations. In some experiments, a decrease was noted at the highest nutrient loadings, corresponding to added concentrations of 1 mg L1 P and 10 mg L1 N. 3. Random Forest model and TRIX used in combination to assess and diagnose the trophic status of Bizerte Lagoon, southern Mediterranean

International audience; A combined multimetric trophic index (TRIX) and the Random Forest (RF) model were used to characterize the trophic status of Bizerte Lagoon. The RF model was used to build a predictive model of chlorophyll a using physicochemical variables (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, oxygen, temperature and salinity) as predictors. The light-harvesting system of Euglena gracilis during the cell cycle

The apoproteins of the light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein complexes LHCI and CP29 (apparent molecular weights of 27 kDa and 29 kDa, respectively) of Euglena gracilis were identified immunologically. Both complexes are present in the thylakoids of autotrophically cultured Euglena cells during the whole cell cycle. The relative amount of each apoprotein tends to increase towards the end of the cell cycle. The light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein complex of photosystem II, LHCII, of E. gracilis contains chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, neoxanthin, diadinoxanthin and beta-carotene. Arctic charr and European whitefish are considered to be strong competitors in lakes, with the latter usually being the superior species. However, high niche plasticity and lake morphometry may suggestively facilitate resource partitioning and coexistence between charr and whitefish. Here, we explore the trophic niche utilization (diet and habitat use) of charr and whitefish co-occurring with brown trout in the deep and oligotrophic Lake Fyresvatnet, southern Norway (59˚05’N, 8˚10’E).
