Neurochemical and morphological studies on demyelination in multiple sclerosis with special reference to etiological aspects.

Light microscopic studies were used as control for neurochemical studies and these showed that some micro plaques could be found also in areas which were normal on visual inspection. Also foreign cell infiltrates were found outside any clear plaque material. The number of these cells did not correlate with other findings like lipid or enzyme chemistry. In electronmicroscopic studies astrocytes demonstrated most lysosomes and phagocytosis of myelin. This increased lysosomal reaction was demonstrated also in biochemical analyses performed on MS biopsy specimens. Metalloprotease meprin beta in rat kidney: glomerular localization and differential expression in glomerulonephritis

Meprin (EC 3.4.24.18) is an oligomeric metalloendopeptidase found in microvillar membranes of kidney proximal tubular epithelial cells. Here, we present the first report on the expression of meprin beta in rat glomerular epithelial cells and suggest a potential involvement in experimental glomerular disease. We detected meprin beta in glomeruli of immunostained rat kidney sections on the protein level and by quantitative RT-PCR of laser-capture microdissected glomeruli on the mRNA level. Abnormal accumulation of autophagic vesicles correlates with axonal and synaptic pathology in young Alzheimer's mice hippocampus

Dystrophic neurites associated with amyloid plaques precede neuronal death and manifest early in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this work we have characterized the plaque-associated neuritic pathology in the hippocampus of young (4- to 6-month-old) PS1(M146L)/APP(751SL) mice model, as the initial degenerative process underlying functional disturbance prior to neuronal loss. Neuritic plaques accounted for almost all fibrillar deposits and an axonal origin of the dystrophies was demonstrated. C-erbB-2-oncogene expression in breast carcinoma: Analysis by S1 nuclease protection assay and immunohistochemistry in relation to clinical parameters

The c-erbB-2 mRNA was detected by the S1 nuclease protection assay and Northern blotting in breast cancer tissues. In contrast to the Northern blot analysis which has been used in all recent publications concerning c-erbB-2 expression on the level of RNA, the S1-nuclease protection assay has distinct advantages with respect to sensitivity, reproducibility, and handling of radioactive probes. Extramammary Paget Disease of the Axilla Associated With Comedo-like Apocrine Carcinoma In Situ.

Extramammary Paget disease of the axilla with underlying apocrine carcinoma has been reported only in six cases until now. This report deals with a seventh case characterized by the unique finding of comedo-like features evocative of large cell ductal breast carcinoma within an otherwise typical in situ apocrine carcinoma. This is characterized by spiral-shaped foci of epithelial proliferation with decapitation secretion and central masses of necrotic debris. Immunoelectron microscopic localization of nitric oxide synthase III in the guinea pig organ of Corti

Nitric oxide synthase III (NOS III) was identified in the guinea pig cochlea on an ultrastructural level using a post-embedding immunolabeling procedure. Ultrathin sections of London Resin (LR) White-embedded specimens were incubated with various concentrations of a commercially available antibody to NOS III and the immunoreactivity visualized by a gold-labeled secondary antibody. Endometrial stromal sarcomas: immunohistochemical, electron microscopical and cytogenetic findings in two cases.

Uterine sarcomas are approximately 3% of all malignant uterine corpus tumours. Of these, the tumours that originate solely in the stromal elements of the uterine wall are infrequent and have not been well characterized cytogenetically. We report two cases of endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS), one low grade and one high grade, diagnosed by conventional histology, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and cytogenetics. Stromal extracellular matrix (ECM) components are thought to play an important role in regulating invasion of human gliomas. Macrophages and microglial cells may heavily influence the integrity of the extracellular compartment of gliomas, and the affected ECM may play a key role in regulating migratory activity of both tumor cells and macrophages/microglia. Filamin C accumulation is a strong but nonspecific immunohistochemical marker of core formation in muscle.

Filamin C is the muscle isoform of a group of large actin-crosslinking proteins. On the one hand, filamin C is associated with the Z-disk of the myofibrillar apparatus and binds to myotilin; on the other hand, it interacts with the sarcoglycan complex at the sarcolemma.
