Modulation of right motor cortex excitability without awareness following presentation of masked self-images.

The neural substrates of self-awareness have been studied with a variety of neurophysiological and behavioral tools. In the present study, unconscious modulation of corticospinal excitability following presentation of self-images was probed with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS-induced motor evoked potentials (MEP) were collected from the contralateral first dorsal interosseus (FDI) muscle while subjects viewed masked pictures of their own face. MEP amplitudes were compared to those obtained when pictures of strangers were masked. TMS activation of interhemispheric pathways between the posterior parietal cortex and the contralateral motor cortex

Using a twin coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (tc-TMS) approach we have previously demonstrated that facilitation may be detected in the primary motor cortex (M1) following stimulation over the ipsilateral caudal intraparietal sulcus (cIPS). Here we tested the interhemispheric interactions between the IPS and the contralateral motor cortex (M1). We found that conditioning the right cIPS facilitated contralateral M1 when the conditioning stimulus had an intensity of 90% resting motor threshold (RMT) but not at 70% or 110% RMT. Summary Erythropoietin (EPO) is a potent regulator of the viability, proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells. Its effect is mediated by binding to the erythropoietin receptor (EPO-R), a member of a new cytokine receptor family. Alterations of the EPO/EPO-R system have recently been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of familial erythrocytosis and polycythaemia vera (PV). Whole-exome sequencing identifies the first French MODY 6 family with a new mutation in the NEUROD1 gene

Abstract Aim The aim of the present study was to identify the affected gene in a French family with maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) using whole-exome sequencing (WES). Methods WES was performed in one patient with MODY, and candidate variants were confirmed in members of the immediate family by Sanger sequencing. Results In the proband, a new heterozygous missense mutation (c.340A>C) was identified in the NEUROD1 gene by WES analysis and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Chronic intestinal inflammation induced by 2,4,6,-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) is characterized by a transmural granulomatous colitis that mimics some characteristics of human Crohn's disease. Here, we show that the transcription factor NF-kappa B p65 was strongly activated in TNBS-induced colitis and in colitis of interleukin-10-deficient mice. Local administration of p65 antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotides abrogated clinical and histological signs of colitis and was more effective in treating TNBS-induced colitis than single or daily administration of glucocorticoids. Two-phase prevalence surveys with screening (phase 1) and examination (phase 2) are useful for some chronic diseases. Attrition, which may bias estimates, occurs in either phase because some eligible subjects die before contact, some refuse to cooperate, some are incapacitated, and some are unreachable. This investigation relates to a survey of neurologic diseases conducted in three municipalities of Sicily (prevalence date, November 1, 1987) and considers the attrition experienced and the use of proxy respondents in phase 1 and auxiliary information in phase 2 to offset, in part, this attrition. Cardiac surgery outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): A case-series report

Abstract Objective The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the postoperative course of patients after cardiac surgery is unknown. We experienced a major severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak in our cardiac surgery unit, with several patients who tested positive early after surgery. Here we describe the characteristics, postoperative course, and laboratory findings of these patients, along with the fate of the health care workers. We also discuss how we reorganize and reallocate hospital resources to resume the surgical activity without further positive patients.
