Temporal Profile of Gene Induction After Venous Ischemia and Effects of Spreading Depression

Occlusion of two adjacent cortical veins is followed by a widespread reduction of rCBF and the occurrence of small infarcts, which become larger if spreading depression (SD) occurs. The infarct matures over time with TUNEL-positive cells seen in the penumbra up to 4 days after vein occlusion. Caspase inhibition with zVAD.fmk reduces infarct size. Here, the time course of gene expression in the penumbra is compared to that induced by SD alone.

To investigate the effect of intensive lipid lowering with high-dose atorvastatin on the incidence of major cardiovascular events compared with low-dose atorvastatin in patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes, with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD). Following 8 weeks' open-label therapy with atorvastatin (10 mg/d), 10,001 patients with coronary artery disease were randomized to receive double-blind therapy with either 80 mg/d or 10 mg/d of atorvastatin between July 1, 1998, and December 31, 1999. Temporal and Spatial Evolution of Cortical Blood Flow in the Penumbra of Venous Infarcts

A cortical venous infarction model has been evaluated regarding the temporal and spatial evolution of regional flow reduction. Two cortical veins were occluded photochemically with rose bengal and fiberoptic illumination. Seven rats served to demonstrate effects on regional cortical blood flow using laser Doppler scanning. After two-vein occlusion, there was a widespread reduction of flow that gradually deteriorated after vein occlusion when regional cortical flow in a 3.5 x 7.0 mm window: after 15 min it had decreased to 57.8% ± 8.0%, and after 75 min it was 34.3% ± 5.4%. Modelling of the Ischemic Penumbra

What happens to the ischemic penumbra – defined as a territory of critically reduced blood flow in the close neighborhood of an ischemic core – determines outcome after stroke. Currently the pathophysiology of the penumbra is studied predominantly in rat models with occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Here we propose two other rat models with distinct advantages. One produces a large territory of critical flow reduction in the cortex of one hemisphere without presence of an infarct core: this model is suited to study mediator mechanisms that may transform the penumbra into necrotic tissue. Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Modified most-probable-number technique for the specific determination of Escherichia coli from environmental samples using a fluorogenic method

A specific and senstive modification of the most-probable-number (MPN) technique by addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG) to both presumptive and confirmatory media was performed. The use of this modification allows the precise determination of Escherichia coli from marine samples (seawater, sediment and shellfish) within 7 days compared to 10–12 days required by using of the standard methodology. No false-positive isolates for fluorescence reaction have been observed, although one E. coli strain fluorescent-positive on agar was isolated from nonfluorescent tubes. Abstract In the present study rheological, static and impact tests are carried out on two adhesive resins usually employed in marine applications; then single lap joint tests are conducted on composites joints evidencing the effect of the curing time of both resins on the mechanical properties of the joint.
