Kadanoff-Baym approach to quantum transport through interacting nanoscale systems: from the transient to the steady-state regime

2009

We propose a time-dependent many-body approach to study the short-time dynamics of correlated electrons in quantum transport through nanoscale systems contacted to metallic leads. This approach is based on the time-propagation of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for the nonequilibrium many-body Green's function of open and interacting systems out of equilibrium. An important feature of the method is that it takes full account of electronic correlations and embedding effects in the presence of time-dependent external fields, while at the same time satisfying the charge conservation law. The method further extends the Meir-Wingreen formula to the time domain for initially correlated states. We stu…

Universal correction for the Becke-Johnson exchange potential

2010

The Becke-Johnson exchange potential [A. D. Becke and E. R. Johnson, J. Chem. Phys. 124, 221101 (2006)] has been successfully used in electronic structure calculations within density-functional theory. However, in its original form, the potential may dramatically fail in systems with non-Coulombic external potentials, or in the presence of external magnetic or electric fields. Here, we provide a system-independent correction to the Becke-Johnson approximation by (i) enforcing its gauge-invariance and (ii) making it exact for any single-electron system. The resulting approximation is then better designed to deal with current-carrying states and recovers the correct asymptotic behavior for sy…

Magnons at low excitations: Observation of incoherent coupling to a bath of two-level systems

2019

Collective magnetic excitation modes, magnons, can be coherently coupled to microwave photons in the single excitation limit. This allows for access to quantum properties of magnons and opens up a range of applications in quantum information processing, with the intrinsic magnon linewidth representing the coherence time of a quantum resonator. Our measurement system consists of a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere and a three-dimensional (3D) microwave cavity at temperatures and excitation powers typical for superconducting quantum circuit experiments. We perform spectroscopic measurements to determine the limiting factor of magnon coherence at these experimental conditions. Using the input-o…

From kinetic to collective behavior in thermal transport on semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures

2013

We present a model which deepens into the role that normal scattering has on the thermal conductivity in semiconductor bulk, micro and nanoscale samples. Thermal conductivity as a function of the temperature undergoes a smooth transition from a kinetic to a collective regime that depends on the importance of normal scattering events. We demonstrate that in this transition, the key point to fit experimental data is changing the way to perform the average on the scattering rates. We apply the model to bulk Si with different isotopic compositions obtaining an accurate fit. Then we calculate the thermal conductivity of Si thin films and nanowires by only introducing the effective size as additi…

Theory of Current-Induced Angular Momentum Transfer Dynamics in Spin-Orbit Coupled Systems.

2020

Motivated by the importance of understanding competing mechanisms to current-induced spin-orbit torque in complex magnets, we develop a unified theory of current-induced spin-orbital coupled dynamics. The theory describes angular momentum transfer between different degrees of freedom in solids, e.g., the electron orbital and spin, the crystal lattice, and the magnetic order parameter. Based on the continuity equations for the spin and orbital angular momenta, we derive equations of motion that relate spin and orbital current fluxes and torques describing the transfer of angular momentum between different degrees of freedom. We then propose a classification scheme for the mechanisms of the c…

Engineering the dynamics of topological spin textures by anisotropic spin-orbit torques

2020

Integrating topologically stabilized magnetic textures such as skyrmions as nanoscale information carriers into future technologies requires the reliable control by electric currents. Here, we uncover that the relevant skyrmion Hall effect, which describes the deflection of moving skyrmions from the current flow direction, acquires important corrections owing to anisotropic spin-orbit torques that alter the dynamics of topological spin structures. Thereby, we propose a viable means for manipulating the current-induced motion of skyrmions and antiskyrmions. Based on these insights, we demonstrate by first-principles calculations and symmetry arguments that the motion of spin textures can be …

Effect of magnons on the temperature dependence and anisotropy of spin-orbit torque

2020

We investigate the influence of magnons on the temperature-dependence and the anisotropy of the spin-orbit torque (SOT). For this purpose we use 3rd order perturbation theory in the framework of the Keldysh formalism in order to derive suitable equations to compute the magnonic SOT. We find several contributions to the magnonic SOT, which depend differently on the spin-wave stiffness $\mathcal{A}$ and on the temperature $T$, with the dominating contribution scaling like $T^{2}/\mathcal{A}^{2}$. Based on this formalism we compute the magnonic SOT in the ferromagnetic Rashba model. For large Rashba parameters the magnonic SOT is strongly anisotropic and for small quasiparticle broadening it m…

Electronic structure of triangular, hexagonal and round graphene flakes near the Fermi level

2008

The electronic shell structure of triangular, hexagonal and round graphene quantum dots (flakes) near the Fermi level has been studied using a tight-binding method. The results show that close to the Fermi level the shell structure of a triangular flake is that of free massless particles, and that triangles with an armchair edge show an additional sequence of levels ("ghost states"). These levels result from the graphene band structure and the plane wave solution of the wave equation, and they are absent for triangles with an zigzag edge. All zigzag triangles exhibit a prominent edge state at the Fermi level, and few low-energy conduction electron states occur both in triangular and hexagon…

Spin-orbit torques from interfacial spin-orbit coupling for various interfaces

2017

We use a perturbative approach to study the effects of interfacial spin-orbit coupling in magnetic multilayers by treating the two-dimensional Rashba model in a fully three-dimensional description of electron transport near an interface. This formalism provides a compact analytic expression for current-induced spin-orbit torques in terms of unperturbed scattering coefficients, allowing computation of spin-orbit torques for various contexts, by simply substituting scattering coefficients into the formulas. It applies to calculations of spin-orbit torques for magnetic bilayers with bulk magnetism, those with interface magnetism, a normal metal/ferromagnetic insulator junction, and a topologic…

Ab initio analysis of magnetic properties of the prototype B20 chiral magnet FeGe

2019

FeGe in the B20 phase is an experimentally well-studied prototypical chiral magnet exhibiting helical spirals, skyrmion lattices and individual skyrmions with a robust length of 70~nm. While the helical spiral ground state can be verified by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, this feature size could not be reproduced even approximately. To develop a coherent picture of the discrepancy between experiment and theory, we investigate in this work the magnetic properties of FeGe from first-principles using different electronic-structure methods. We study atomistic as well as micromagnetic parameters describing exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and di…
