Case-studies on average-case analysis for an elementary course on algorithms
1999
Average-case algorithm analysis is usually viewed as a tough subject by students in the first courses in computer science. Traditionally, these topics are fully developed in advanced courses with a clear mathematical orientation. The work presented here is not an alternative to this, rather, it presents the analysis of algorithms (and average-case in particular) adapted to the mathematical background of students in an elementary course on algorithms or programming by using two selected case-studies.
Iterative altitude-aiding algorithm for improved GNSS positioning
2011
The system proposed in this study relies on a WAVE P2P network, which is a proper standard to fit the vehicular environment wireless communications requests. Starting from the chance to exchange information given by this infrastructure, the possibility to improve the performance of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver based on a Kalman filter is considered. This improvement is obtained exploiting the external altitude measurements provided by other peers in the network, equipped with GNSS receivers. The topic of an altitude-aided system has been described in a previous work, that highlighted the need for a parameter that points out the effectiveness and the consistency of th…
An Indoor and Outdoor Navigation System for Visually Impaired People
2019
In this paper, we present a system that allows visually impaired people to autonomously navigate in an unknown indoor and outdoor environment. The system, explicitly designed for low vision people, can be generalized to other users in an easy way. We assume that special landmarks are posed for helping the users in the localization of pre-defined paths. Our novel approach exploits the use of both the inertial sensors and the camera integrated into the smartphone as sensors. Such a navigation system can also provide direction estimates to the tracking system to the users. The success of out approach is proved both through experimental tests performed in controlled indoor environments and in r…
Over-expression of two different forms of the α-secretase ADAM10 affects learning and memory in mice
2006
Members of the ADAM family (adisintegrin and metalloprotease) are the main candidates for physiologically relevant alpha-secretases. The alpha-secretase cleaves in the non-amyloidogenic pathway the amyloid precursor protein within the region of the Abeta peptides preventing their aggregation in the brain. The increase of alpha-secretase activity in the brain provides a plausible strategy to prevent Abeta formation. Concerning this possibility two transgenic mouse lines (FVB/N) have been created: mice over-expressing the bovine form of the alpha-secretase (ADAM10) and mice over-expressing an inactive form of the alpha-secretase (ADAM10-E348A-HA; ADAM10-dn). For behavioral examination a F1 ge…
Viscoelastics: Medical Device or Drug
2000
In § 2 of the German Drug Laws (AMG, Arzneimittelgesetz), it is determined that such materials that fall under the heading of medicinal products (MPG, Medizinproduktegesetz, 1994) are not drugs in the AMG sense of the word. MPG medicinal products, as defined in §3 are those substances whose main effect is neither pharmacological, immunological, nor metabolic.
Weierstraß’s Approximation Theorem (1885) and his 1886 lecture course revisited
2015
The paper provides new insight into the origins of Weierstras’s 1886 lecture course on the foundations of function theory and of the mimeographed lecture notes connected to this course which were published by the author in German in 1988. A short overview of the content of the lecture course is given; the central role that Weierstras’s famous approximation theorem of 1885 played in it is emphasized. The paper uses archival material recently discovered at the Institut Mittag-Leffler in Djursholm.
Long-term effects of delayed motherhood in mice on postnatal development and behavioural traits of offspring
2003
BACKGROUND: Some epidemiological evidence tentatively suggests that children born to older parents may have lower intellectual development and maturity than children whose parents are younger. This study aims to analyse the long-term effects of delayed motherhood in mice on postnatal development and behavioural traits later in life. METHODS: Hybrid females, either at the age of 10 weeks or 51 weeks, were individually housed with a randomly selected 12-14 week old hybrid male. After a postweaning resting period of 1 week, dams were caged again with a new randomly selected 12-14 week old male. This sequence of events was repeated until old females reached the end of their reproductive life. R…
Governing Performance in the Nordic Universities: Where Are We Heading and What Have We Learned?
2019
AbstractIn this final chapter, we revisit the overall aims of the volume and discuss the findings and implications for theory, policy, and practice. The general aim of the project has been to study the effects of the changing conditions of the environment under which Nordic higher education institutions operated during the period 2003–2013. A conceptual framework inspired by a typology developed by Johan P. Olsen was applied, focusing on various aspects of governance of universities and also stressing the ability of universities—as institutions—to resist, adapt, and respond to change initiatives from external and internal actors. Based on rich sources of data, including statistics, intervie…
