MSc course program on biomedical optics

1997

A new Msc study course program on biomedical optics has been developed and adapted. The program consists of three main parts. (1) Fundamentals of tissue optics, (2) Optical sensing for diagnostics and monitoring, (3) Laser-tissue interaction and laser treatment. The full program and some comments on it are presented.

Experiments on Concurrent Artificial Environment

We show how the simulation of concurrent system is of interest for both behavioral studies and strategies of learning applied on prey-predator problems. In our case learning studies into unknown environment have been applied to mobile units by using genetic algorithms (GA). A set of trajectories, generated by GA, are able to build a description of the external scene driving a predators to a prey. Here, an example of prey-predator strategy,based on field of forces, is proposed. The evolution of the corespondent system can be formalized as an optimization problem and, for that purpose, GA can be use to give the right solution at this problem. A cross-countries and interprofessional novel approach for delivering an international interdisciplinary graduate health informatics course online is presented. Included in this discussion are the challenges, lessons learned, and pedagogical recommendations from the experiences of teaching the course. Average-case analysis in an elementary course on algorithms

Average-case algorithm analysis is usually viewed as a tough subject by students in the first courses in Computer Science. Traditionally, these topics are fully developed in advanced courses with a clear mathematical orientation. The work presented here is not an alternative to this, but, it presents the analysis of algorithms (and average-case in particular) adapted to the mathematical background of students in an elementary course on Algorithms or Programming by using some specially selected examples.

Life two years after a game programming course: longitudinal viewpoints on K-12 outreach

In our faculty we have run week-long K-12 game programming courses now for three summers. In this paper we investigate what programming-related activities students do after they take a course, and what factors in the students' background relate to post-course programming. We also investigate a possible change in the students' interest towards higher education science studies. We find that most students continue programming after the course and that their interest towards science studies keeps increasing. In student background we observed some indicative trends, but did not find reliable explaining factors related to post-course programming or increased interest towards science studies.

A cognitive architecture for robot self-consciousness

An Emphatic Humanoid Robot with Emotional Latent Semantic Behavior

In this paper we propose an Entertainment Humanoid Robot model based on Latent Semantic Analysis, that tries to exhibit an emotional behavior in the interaction with human. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), based on vector space allows the coding of the words semantics by specific statistical computations applied to a large corpus of text. The perception loop in CiceRobot, a museum guide robot

The paper discusses a model of robot perception based on a comparison loop process between the actual and the expected robot input sensory data generated by a 3D robot/environment simulator. The perception loop process is operating in CiceRobot, a functional robot architecture implemented on an autonomous robot RWI B21 offering guided tours at the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, Italy.
