Infrared pulsed laser deposition of niobium nitride thin films

2011

We have successfully fabricated superconducting niobium nitride thin films on single crystals of magnesium oxide using a pulsed laser deposition technique where 1064 nm (photon energy ~1.16 eV) laser pulses from an Nd:YAG laser were used for ablation. A correlation between the superconducting transition temperature, the nitrogen base pressure during deposition and the lattice parameter of the produced NbN films was observed. Superconductor-insulator-normal metal junctions fabricated using these NbN films as the superconductor revealed nonlinear electrical characteristics at 4.2 K associated with quasiparticle tunneling.

Some morphologic changes induced by Nd:YAG laser on the noncoated enamel surface: A scanning electron microscopy study

1992

The enamel surface layer of some human teeth was treated with the low-energy Nd:YAG laser at 8 mJ pulse energy. These samples were previously etched with 0.05 M orthophosphoric acid to reduce the surface reflection. The treated samples, as well as the control samples, were widely studied by scanning electron microscopy, and, in the lased group, significant morphologic changes affecting the enamel surface were observed. Those changes reveal principally the loss of the typical surface structure of the acid-etched enamel. The hydroxyapatite prisms were not discernible, and there was a decrease in the roughness of the lased surface enamel. These laser-induced structural changes may be related t…

XPS and SIMS study of aluminium native oxide modifications induced by Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment

2006

Publié suite au congrès ECASIA: 11th European Conference on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis, 25-30 September 2005, Vienna, Austria; International audience; During laser cleaning of aluminium in ambient atmosphere, modifications of the metal surface can be induced by transient thermal effects. This work aims to characterize the modification of the aluminium oxide layer on pure aluminium for a wide range of power per area using a Q-switched Nd :YAG (1064 nm) laser with two pulse durations, 10 and 180 ns. Experiments were carried out with single laser shots in ambient air at fluences (e.g. energy per area) below the ablation regime. For 10-ns pulses with fluences between 0.7 and…

Thermal expansion, normalized thermo-optic coefficients, and condition for second harmonic generation of a Nd:YAG laser with wide temperature bandwid…

2011

Interferometric determination of thermal expansion and of normalized thermo-optic coefficients of RbTiOPO4 at four laser wavelengths are performed as a function of temperature. A suitable vectorial formalism applied to obtained data allows the establishment of the temperature dependence of refractive indices, and subsequent theoretical analysis enables one to predict that an extremum in the evolution of the phase-matching direction in the (X,Y) plane should occur near 100 °C for type II second harmonic generation of Nd:YAG lasers, with a temperature bandwidth that can be as large as 117 °C for a crystal of 10 mm in length. Such unusual behavior is observed experimentally by recording the co…

Characterisation of cw Nd : YAG laser keyhole dynamics

2001

Abstract The paper concerns laser–matter interaction characterisation. In this work, we use a rapid CCD camera located coaxially to the laser beam and we compare recorded images with those obtained by numerical modelling. Because images are difficult to understand, we compute thermal radiation emitted by a keyhole of fixed geometry and we adjust it trying to approach the camera record. The modelling treats radiative heat transfer within the keyhole and determines the sensor illumination map. By adjusting the geometrical characteristics of the hole, we seek to obtain the image that corresponds as well as possible to the realised experiment. Results are compared with other experimental method…

Microstructural and tribological study of Nd:YAG laser treated titanium plates.

2008

Abstract In this work, the fretting behaviour of pure Ti plates laser treated with a Nd:YAG pulsed laser was compared to that of untreated Ti plates. Fretting tests were done at room temperature without lubrication. The contact geometry was a cylinder (bearing steel) on a plane. The evolution of both the ratio, μ = Q / P , between the normal and the tangential forces, and the Fouvry's energy criterion ( A ) were recorded as a function of the number of fretting cycles, N . Energy dispersive spectrometry and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to analyse the fretting scars. The oxidized layer formed by the laser treatment displayed a mixed slip regime as a function of N , and a smaller frettin…

Grooving by Nd:YAG laser treatment

2000

Abstract The properties of the laser beam have been used to produce deep and thin grooves in metals, melted material being removed with the assistance of a high velocity gas. Preliminary experiments show that the geometry and the location of the gas inlet tube are the main parameters governing the evacuation of the scoria. The influence of the nature of the materials on the depth of the grooves is discussed from examination of the grooves realized on various metals (copper, aluminum, titanium,…). Finally, a statistical study is performed to indicate the parameters that have to be controlled to secure regular grooves. It appears that the groove width is not too much affected by parameter var…

Thermal increase in the oral mucosa and in the jawbone during Nd:YAG laser applications. Ex vivo study

2012

Objective: Literature reports bactericidal and biostimulant effects for Nd:YAG laser procedures on bone and oral mucosa but the possible overheating can cause damage to anatomical structures. The aim of the study is the evaluation of thermal increase in different levels of oral tissues: mucosa, periosteum and bone during defocused application of Nd:YAG laser at different parameters. Study Design: Superficial thermal evaluation was performed in pig jaws with a thermal camera device; deep thermal evaluation was realized by 4 thermocouples placed at a subperiosteal level and at 1,2 and 4 mm depth in the jaw bone. Laser applications of 1 minute were performed 5 times (with a pause of 1 minute) …
