INTRODUCTION: Patients with Cystic Fibrosis, especially in adolescence, could develop endocrine and metabolic complications, related to nutritional state and chronic inflammation. They develop a progressive decrease in lean body mass correlated with the progression of lung disease. Adipose tissue is involved as well and adipocytokines are a possible link between malnutrition and long term complications. We investigated the effect of pioglitazone in comparison with and in combination with simvastatin on insulin resistance, plasma adiponectin, postprandial plasma glucose, insulin, and intact proinsulin levels in a nondiabetic population at cardiovascular risk. One hundred twenty-five nondiabetic patients at cardiovascular risk were randomized to pioglitazone (PIO), pioglitazone and simvastatin (PIO/SIM), or simvastatin (SIM) treatments. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors, including visceral obesity, glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes, elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL cholesterol, and hypertension. MetS is rapidly increasing in prevalence worldwide as a consequence of the “epidemic” obesity, with a considerable impact on the global incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The hemagglutinin of Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a major adhesin for uroepithelial cells.

The 160-kDa hemagglutinin of Staphylococcus saprophyticus also serves as a fibronectin-binding protein, and the two activities may be present on different parts of the molecule. Bacteria expressing the 160-kDa hemagglutinin bound in large numbers to histological sections of human ureters, whereas nonhemagglutinating bacteria did not bind. Binding was decreased by an antiserum to the 160-kDa protein and by a preparation of sheep erythrocyte membranes. Fibronectin had no effect. We therefore conclude that binding of S. saprophyticus to uroepithelial cells is mediated by the hemagglutinating activity of the 160-kDa surface protein.

Adsorption and Conformation Behavior of Biotinylated Fibronectin on Streptavidin-Modified TiOX Surfaces Studied by SPR and AFM

It is well-known that protein-modified implant surfaces such as TiO(2) show a higher bioconductivity. Fibronectin is a glycoprotein from the extracellular matrix (ECM) with a major role in cell adhesion. It can be applied on titanium oxide surfaces to accelerate implant integration. Not only the surface concentration but also the presentation of the protein plays an important role for the cellular response. Non-fouling TiO2 surfaces are attractive for a wide range of applications such as biosensors and medical devices, where biologically inert surfaces are needed. Typically, this is achieved by controlled surface modifications which prevent protein adsorption. For example, polyethylene glycol (PEG) or PEG-derived polymers have been widely applied to render TiO2 surfaces biologically inert. Susceptibility variants for obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the population of Latvia

Darbs ietver pētījumus par riska gēnu lokusos esošo biežo variantu saistību ar 2.tipa cukura diabētu (T2D) un aptaukošanos Latvijas populācijā. Pētījumu parādīja, ka potenciāli funkcionāls variants AGRP asociējas ar paaugstinātu ĶMI. Savukārt, adiponektīna gēna rajonā esošie varianti nav uzskatāmi par būtiskiem aptaukošanās un T2D riska faktoriem mūsu populācijā, bet iespējams ir iesaistīti kardiovaskulāro saslimšanu patoģenēzē. Varianti TCF7L2 ir nozīmīgi T2D riska faktori pacientiem ar normālu ķermeņa svaru.
