Although gap junctions have been observed in GABAergic interneurons of several brain regions, this chapter focuses on the distribution and functions of gap junctions and connexins in inhibitory interneurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Evidence for interconnections mediated by electrical synapses is reported for at least eight cerebral cortex interneuron types, classified on the basis of morphology, electrophysiology and molecular markers. Efferent projections of the medial cortex of the lizards Podarcis hispanica and Gallotia stehlinii were studied by examining the transport of horseradish peroxidase; results were correlated with those from Timm-stained sections. Two efferent systems were found. The first reaches the distal part of the outer plexiform layer in the medial, dorsomedial, and dorsal cortices, i.e., zones that are negative to Timm staining, and possibly originates from horizontal fusiform neurons. Pupil dilation under constant illumination is a physiological marker where modulation is related to several cognitive functions involved in daily decision making. There is evidence for a role of pupil dilation change during decision-making tasks associated with uncertainty, reward-prediction errors and surprise. However, while some work suggests that pupil dilation is mainly modulated by reward predictions, others point out that this marker is related to uncertainty signaling and surprise. Perceptual Interactions in Complex Odor Mixtures

The perception of everyday odors relies on elemental or configural processing of complex mixtures of odorants. Theoretically, the configural processing of a mixture could lead to the perception of a single specific odor for the mixture; however, such a type of perception has hardly been proven in human studies. Here, we report the results of a sorting task demonstrating that a six-component mixture carries an odor clearly distinct from the odors of its components. These results suggest a blending effect of individual components’ odors in mixtures containing more than three odorants.

For 100 years Benham's top has been a popular device demonstrating pattern-induced flicker colours (PIFCs). Results of early and recent investigations on PIFCs are reported and show that the phenomenon originates in phase-sensitive lateral interactions of modulated neural activity in the retina followed by additional spatial interactions in the visual cortex behind the locus of binocular fusion. Colour matches with normal colour stimuli indicate that S/(M + L) opponent neurons are involved. Dichromats do not find matching stimuli for all PIFCs. PIFCs may become useful in medical diagnosis. AMPA Receptor Auxiliary Proteins of the CKAMP Family

α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors are assembled of four core subunits and several additional interacting proteins. Cystine-knot AMPA receptor-modulating proteins (CKAMPs) constitute a family of four proteins that influence the trafficking, subcellular localization and function of AMPA receptors. The four CKAMP family members CKAMP39/shisa8, CKAMP44/shisa9, CKAMP52/shisa6 and CKAMP59/shisa7 differ in their expression profile and their modulatory influence on AMPA receptor function. In this review, I report about recent findings on the differential roles of CKAMP family members.
