Musica e architettura.

September 13th 1956, Stravinsky conducted at the basilica of St. Mark in Venice the first performance of the "…

Microhardness of different resin cement shades inside the root canal

2012

Objectives: To compare microhardness along the root canal post space of two resin cements in different shades and a dual-cure resin core material. Study Design: Root canals of 21 bovine incisors were prepared for post space. Translucent posts (X•Post, Dentsply DeTrey) were luted using one the following resin luting agent: Calibra (Dentsply DeTrey) in Translucent, Medium and Opaque shades, RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) in Translucent, A2 and A3 shades and the dual-cure resin core material Core•X flow. All materials were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions and were all photopolymerized (Bluephase LED unit, Ivoclar Vivadent, 40s). After 24 hours, roots were transversally cut into 9 slice…

Diverse histories, common ground and a shared future:the education of career guidance and counselling professionals in the Nordic countries

2019

The development of education programmes in career guidance and counseling (CGC) has followed different paths among the various Nordic countries. Ten CGC programmes in Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden were evaluated against the NICE curricular model. The results show that all NICE core competences are represented in the curricula. However, there is greater focus in some programmes on developing competences for individual career guidance, than on developing competences for working at organisational and societal levels. Implications for the cooperation and professionalisation of CGC within the Nordic countries are discussed as well as limitations of the NICE model. Keywo…

Approaches to study yeast cell aging and death

2014

For millennia, yeast has been exploited to obtain fermentation products, such as foods and beverages. For c. 50 years, yeast has been an established model organism for basic and applied research, and more specifically, for c. 15 years, this unicellular organism has been applied to dissect molecular mechanisms of cell aging and programmed cell death. In this review, we present an overview of approaches to study cell aging and death in yeast, including lifespan assessments, calorie restriction, cell viability, survival, and death markers.

Il satiro come maestro di moralità. Una stravagante invenzione di Jan Kochanowski

2016

Three visits of Jan Kochanowski in Padua, at that time under the rule of the Republic of Venice which influenced both cultural and intellectual life in the city, had a considerable impact on his literary output. This essay proves that there was a significant mark of the Serenissima entering into the theatrical life, related to one of his earliest texts, Satyr albo Dziki Mąz (The Satyr or the wild Man), dedicated to the king Sigismund II August and published presumably for the first time in 1563. An unsolved issue concerns not only the idea of making the Satyr a morality teacher, but also the question whether it was just a text meant for reading or for being performed in a theatrical form.

W gronie zwycięskich mocarstw czołową rolę odegrali wówczas amerykański prezydent Thomas Woodrow Wilson oraz dwaj premierzy – Francji Georges Clemenceau i Wielkiej Brytanii David Lloyd George.

Neuroactive compounds produced by bacteria from the marine sponge Halichondria panicea: activation of the neuronal NMDA receptor

1998

Abstract Previous studies revealed that the marine sponge Halichondria panicea habors symbiotic- and commensalic bacteria ( Althoff et al., 1998 . Marine Biol. 130, 529–536). In the present study the hypothesis was tested whether some of those bacteria synthesize neuroactive compounds. For the first time the effect of bacterial bioactive compounds on the neuronal ionotropic glutamate receptors [iGluR], subtype N -methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA) receptor, was checked. In cortical neurons from rats as cell system the supernatant of two bacterial cultures isolated from H. panicea proved to agonize the NMDA receptor. The response of the NMDA receptor to the bioactive compounds was determined by mea…

Pleuropulmonary changes induced by ergoline drugs.

1996

Classic ergolines, such as bromocriptine, methysergide and ergotamine, can induce chronic pleuropneumonitis. We present the cases of eight patients who developed similar changes whilst on other ergolines. In this retrospective case study spanning 1985-1995, clinical data, radiological material, pulmonary function, bronchoalveolar lavage and histopathology were reviewed. Earlier literature on ergoline-induced pleuropulmonary changes was reviewed. Eight middle-aged to elderly individuals of both sexes developed pleuropulmonary changes during long-term therapy with regular dosages of nicergoline (n = 4), dihydroergocristine (n = 3), or dihydroergotamine (n = 1). Bibasilar pleural thickening wi…

Two pathways, one patient; UK asthma guidelines

2018

The first widely disseminated ‘asthma guideline’ came out of Australia and New Zealand in 1989,1 followed shortly by the British Thoracic Society (BTS) in 1990,2 the United States National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Expert Panel Report in 19913 and the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) strategy document in 1995.4 All have benefited from regular updates, the BTS collaborating with the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN) since 2003, most recently in 2016.5 Each new iteration of the asthma guidelines was written by experts in the field and based on best available evidence. It is not known whether these guidelines (or any others) have improved the care of people with asthm…
