Heat capacity of small superconducting disks

2000

Abstract The superconducting state of small samples in a magnetic field is strongly dependent on the sample dimensions and geometry. We have initiated measurements of heat capacity of small superconducting disks. Our method, extensively used in many of our related experiments, is to measure the thermal time constant as a function of temperature of disks on a thin silicon nitride membrane. Theoretical results on heat capacity of the disks based on the Ginzburg–Landau theory will be presented.

Intercalation chemistry of superconducting zirconium and hafnium nitride halides

2001

Abstract Lithium intercalation in MNX (M=Zr, Hf; X=Cl, Br) may lead to superconducting compounds with critical temperatures up to 24 K. Electrochemical lithiation experiments agree with the results obtained with chemical methods, as samples with larger capacity on discharge are also those having larger lithium contents after chemical lithiation. Variations exist in the electrochemical profiles of different batches for these compounds indicating differences in the intercalation reaction pathway. High-resolution electron microscopy images confirm the structural model isotypic to SmSI for β-MNX phases. The major part of crystals from ZrNX as well as from the HfNCl samples showing a high lithiu…

The role of surface diffusion in the growth mechanism of III-nitride nanowires and nanotubes.

2021

Abstract The spontaneous growth of GaN nanowires (NWs) in absence of catalyst is controlled by the Ga flux impinging both directly on the top and on the side walls and diffusing to the top. The presence of diffusion barriers on the top surface and at the frontier between the top and the sidewalls, however, causes an inhomogeneous distribution of Ga adatoms at the NW top surface resulting in a GaN accumulation in its periphery. The increased nucleation rate in the periphery promotes the spontaneous formation of superlattices in InGaN and AlGaN NWs. In the case of AlN NWs, the presence of Mg can enhance the otherwise short Al diffusion length along the sidewalls inducing the formation of AlN …

α-d-Glucopyranose Adsorption on a Pd30 Cluster Supported on Boron Nitride Nanotube

2016

Boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) as an innovative support for carbohydrate transformation processes was evaluated, using density functional theory. The α-d-glucopyranose adsorption on a Pd30 cluster, supported on BNNT, was used to check both the local activity of topologically different metallic sites and the effects of the proximity of the BNNT surface to the same metallic sites. Detailed geometrical and electronic analyses performed on Pd30/BNNT and α-d-glucopyranose/Pd30/BNNT systems were discussed. It was observed that the deposition of the Pd30 cluster onto the BNNT support gives rise to an electronic rearrangement, determining a charge transfer from the support to the adsorbed metal clus…

Improving the high temperature oxidation resistance of pure titanium by shot-peening treatments

2017

International audience; Shot-peening (SP) treatments have shown their capacity to improve the oxidation resistance of titanium and zirconium thanks to the large compressive stresses and the surface hardening induced by this mechanical process. However, shot-peening treatments can produce a surface chemical deposit, which can modify the high temperature oxidation resistance. Here, we study pure titanium samples shot-peened with different type of balls: tungsten carbide, alumina or glass. The oxidation behavior was studied at 700 °C in dry air by thermo gravimetric analysis for short isotherm oxidation periods up to 100 h. Also, long oxidation tests (3000 h) at 700 °C were performed with an i…

Synthesis of new vanadium–chromium and chromium–molybdenum oxynitrides by direct ammonolysis of freeze-dried precursors

2000

Interstitial vanadium–chromium and chromium–molybdenum oxynitrides in the solid solution series V1 − zCrz(OxNy) and Cr1 − zMoz(OxNy) (z = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) have been obtained by direct ammonolysis of precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of aqueous solutions of the appropriate metal salts. A study of the influence of the preparative variables on the outcomes of this procedure is presented. Compounds in the V1 − zCrz(OxNy) series are prepared as single phases by nitridation at 1073 K, followed by fast cooling of the samples. Compounds in the Cr1 − zMoz(OxNy) series are prepared as nearly single phases by nitridation at different temperatures, optimized for each composi…

Wear of Ceramic Tools When Working Nickel Based Alloys

1996

In order to improve the toughness of alumina materials, various trials have recently been made. These include toughening by the addition of zirconia and of significant amounts of titanium carbide to ceramic oxide Al2O3 and the more recent use of nitride based ceramics, which have resulted in an increase of fracture toughness and in a significant improvement of ceramic tool performance. Another very recent way of improving ceramic materials consists in adding SiC whiskers to Al2O3 matrix. This composite material is also suitable for machining nickel based alloys. In order to evaluate and to qualify these materials some test cycles have been carried out in continuous cutting conditions, emplo…

Natural optical anisotropy of h-BN: Highest giant birefringence in a bulk crystal through the mid-infrared to ultraviolet range

2018

The giant birefringence of layered h-BN was demonstrated by analyzing the interference patterns in reflectance and transmittance measurements in the mid-infrared to the deep ultraviolet energy range. The refractive index for polarization perpendicular to the c axis is much higher than the refractive index for polarization parallel to the c axis, and it displays a strong increase in the ultraviolet range that is attributed to the huge excitonic effects arising from the unique electronic structure of h-BN. Thus, h-BN is shown to exhibit a giant negative birefringence that ranges from -0.7 in the visible to -2 in the deep ultraviolet close to the band gap. The electronic dielectric constants f…
