Dental disease and dietary isotopes of individuals from St Gertrude Church cemetery, Riga, Latvia.

2018

This research explores oral health indicators and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data to explore diet, and differences in diet, between people buried in the four different contexts of the St Gertrude Church cemetery (15th– 17th centuries AD): the general cemetery, two mass graves, and a collective mass burial pit within the general cemetery. The main aim is to assess whether people buried in the mass graves were rural immigrants, or if they were more likely to be the victims of plague (or another epidemic) who lived in Riga and its suburbs. The data produced (from dental disease assessments and isotope analyses) were compared within, as well as between, the contexts. Most differences em…

X-Ray crystallographic and computational study on uranyl-salophen complexes bearing nitro groups.

2017

In the solid state, salophen–UO2 complexes bearing one, two, or three NO2 groups lack the pronounced ligand curvature that represents a structural hallmark for this class of compounds. A detailed structural study based on single-crystal X-ray crystallography and computational methods, comprising molecular dynamics, gas-phase Hartree Fock, and DFT calculations, was carried out to investigate the coordination properties of the uranyl cation.

Successful Treatment of Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome (CAPS) Associated With Splenic Marginal-zone Lymphoma With Low-molecular Weig…

2008

ABSTRACT Case report A 69-year-old woman with splenic marginal-zone lymphoma was admitted with progressive abdominal pain and splenomegaly as the suspected cause of pain. Rituximab treatment (375 mg/m 2 ) had been initiated on the day of admission. Abdominal computerized tomography revealed splenic infarction. Laboratory tests showed elevation of liver enzymes and creatinine, low platelet count, prolonged partial thromboplastin time, and lupus anticoagulant positivity. The diagnosis of catastrophic antiphospholipid antibody syndrome was made. Weight-adjusted low-molecular weight heparin therapy was initiated. Freedom from symptoms and normalization of liver enzymes and creatinine occurred w…

Catalytic activity of a CuGHK peptide-based porous material

2021

The CuGHK peptide-based porous material with a periodic distribution of pockets decorated with lysine side chain active sites was synthesized using a room temperature one-step method and used as a heterogeneous organocatalyst. The pockets are capable of benzaldehyde molecule uptake and show high activity in the Henry reaction with nitromethane. Mechanistic pathways are investigated using an integrative experimental/computational approach.

Unique Bridging Function of the Triazole Core in Copper(II) Chloride Complexes with 1-Allylbenzotriazole

2005

During alternating-current electrochemical synthesis of copper(I) π-complex of [CuCl{C6H4N3(C3H5)}] composition, starting from ethanol solution, containing CuCl2·2H2O and 1-allylbenzotriazole, green crystals of intermediate [CuII3Cl6{C6H4N3(C3H5)}4] (I) compound has been obtained upon 24 h. After some days these crystals transform into red ones of [CuII2Cl4{C6H4N3(C3H5)}3] (II). Both compounds were X-Ray structurally investigated. Crystals of I are triclinic, sp.gr. a = 9.1329(9), b = 10.0352(4), c = 12.239(3) A, α = 76.443(13), β = 84.470(14), γ = 76.808(7)°, V = 1060.5(3) A3, R = 0.0414 for 3311 reflections. Ectopic NGAL expression can alter sensitivity of breast cancer cells to EGFR, Bcl-2, CaM-K inhibitors and the plant natural product berberine

2012

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL, a.k.a Lnc2) is a member of the lipocalin family and has diverse roles. NGAL can stabilize matrix metalloproteinase-9 from autodegradation. NGAL is considered as a siderocalin that is important in the transport of iron. NGAL expression has also been associated with certain neoplasias and is implicated in the metastasis of breast cancer. In a previous study, we examined whether ectopic NGAL expression would alter the sensitivity of breast epithelial, breast and colorectal cancer cells to the effects of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin. While abundant NGAL expression was detected in all the cells infected with a retrovirus encoding NGAL, t…

GSK-3? Can Regulate the Sensitivity of MIA-PaCa-2 Pancreatic and MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells to Chemotherapeutic Drugs, Targeted Therapeutics and Nutra…

2021

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a regulator of signaling pathways. KRas is frequently mutated in pancreatic cancers. The growth of certain pancreatic cancers is KRas-dependent and can be suppressed by GSK-3 inhibitors, documenting a link between KRas and GSK-3. To further elucidate the roles of GSK-3β in drug-resistance, we transfected KRas-dependent MIA-PaCa-2 pancreatic cells with wild-type (WT) and kinase-dead (KD) forms of GSK-3β. Transfection of MIA-PaCa-2 cells with WT-GSK-3β increased their resistance to various chemotherapeutic drugs and certain small molecule inhibitors. Transfection of cells with KD-GSK-3β often increased therapeutic sensitivity. An exception was observed wi…

Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization on the Quality of Swiss Chard at Harvest and during Storage as Minimally Processed Produce

2014

The effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilization (0-50-100-150-200 kg ha-1), minimal processing and cold storage (14 days at 4°C) on yield and quality of fresh-cut Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla L.) were evaluated. Increasing the level of nitrogen fertilization over 100 kg N ha-1, plants had a higher fresh weight, reduced their dry matter content and resulted taller and leafier. Total and marketable yield increased linearly as increasing nitrogen level. Both nitrate and ascorbic acid content at harvest increased as increasing nitrogen supply. Nitrogen fertilization negatively affected the yield of minimal processing. No effect on appearance and quality loss during cold st…

The role of nutrients in the biodegradation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene in liquid and soil.

2011

The widely used explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) has residues that are potentially explosive, toxic, and mutagenic. TNT and other explosives can be degraded by microorganisms; however, biostimulation is needed for process efficiency. To investigate the effectiveness of using biostimulation to degrade TNT, we added varying concentrations of a nutrient amendment consisting of inorganic salts, plant extracts, and molasses to soil and liquid media. For the inoculum we used a consortium of bacteria AM 06 that had exhibited the ability to degrade TNT and which had been previously isolated from explosives-contaminated soils. Phylogenetically, the clones clustered into seven different genera: …
