Physiological and genomic variations in rice cells recovered from direct immersion and storage in liquid nitrogen

1999

The use of cryoprotectants and slow cooling rates are routine procedures for the cryopreservation of plant cell lines. However, our results with rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Taipei 309) show that calli can be cryopreserved by direct immersion and stored in liquid nitrogen without any cryoprotection. The efficiency of recovery using this method, as well as a conventional method was generally increased with a previous abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Following cryopreservation, calli demonstrated some differences with respect to unfrozen calli of the same lines. Thus, resistance to freezing stress (−20°C for 2 h) increased significantly in all lines tested, irrespective of their pre-incubation wi…

Sputtered cuprous oxide thin films and nitrogen doping by ion implantation

2016

Abstract The structural, optical and electrical properties of sputtered cuprous oxide thin films have been optimized through post-deposition thermal treatments. Moreover we have studied the effects of nitrogen doping introduced by ion implantation followed by the optimized oxidant thermal annealing. Three concentrations have been used, 0.6 N%, 1.2 N%, and 2.5 N%. Along with the preservation of the Cu 2 O phase, a slight optical band gap narrowing and a significant conductivity enhancement has been observed with respect to the undoped samples. These results can be justified by the absence of further oxygen vacancies promoted by dopant introduction and by the substitution of O atoms by N ones…

A multivariate approach of changes in filamentous, nitrifying and protist communities and nitrogen removal efficiencies during ozone dosage in a full…

2019

[EN] The application of low ozone dosage to minimize the problems caused by filamentous foaming was evaluated in two bioreactors of an urban wastewater treatment plant. Filamentous and nitrifying bacteria, as well as protist and metazoa, were monitored throughout a one-year period by FISH and conventional microscopy to examine the effects of ozone application on these specific groups of microorganisms. Multivariate data analysis was used to determine if the ozone dosage was a key factor determining the low carbon and nitrogen removal efficiencies observed throughout the study period, as well as to evaluate its impact on the biological communities monitored. The results of this study suggest…

Depletion of ozone and reservoir species of chlorine and nitrogen oxide in the lower Antarctic polar vortex measured from aircraft

2017

Novel airborne in situ measurements of inorganic chlorine, nitrogen oxide species, and ozone were performed inside the lower Antarctic polar vortex and at its edge in September 2012. We focus on one flight during the Transport and Composition of the LMS/Earth System Model Validation (TACTS/ESMVal) campaign with the German research aircraft HALO (High-Altitude LOng range research aircraft), reaching latitudes of 65°S and potential temperatures up to 405 K. Using the early winter correlations of reactive trace gases with N2O from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS), we find high depletion of chlorine reservoir gases up to ∼40% (0.8 ppbv) at 12 km to 1…

Selectivity improvement of semi-conducting gas sensors by selective filter for atmospheric pollutants detection

2006

International audience; The monitoring of atmospheric pollution using chemical gas sensors is a challenge due to the lack of selectivity of most existing devices. However, their performances can be improved using filtering films achieving the separation or the removal of some gases. This study is focused on the detection of carbon monoxide and of oxidant pollutants (nitrogen dioxide and ozone) by sensors constituted of SnO2, or phthalocyanine compounds. Two types of filters were investigated. Filters based on MnO2 powder are successful to remove ozone while preserving nitrogen dioxide in a large temperature range from ambient to 400 -C, but they partially convert carbon monoxide. The second…

Short term associations of ambient nitrogen dioxide with daily total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality: multilocation analysis in 398 cities

2021

Objective To evaluate the short term associations between nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality across multiple countries/regions worldwide, using a uniform analytical protocol. Design Two stage, time series approach, with overdispersed generalised linear models and multilevel meta-analysis. Setting 398 cities in 22 low to high income countries/regions. Main outcome measures Daily deaths from total (62.8 million), cardiovascular (19.7 million), and respiratory (5.5 million) causes between 1973 and 2018. Results On average, a 10 μg/m3 increase in NO2 concentration on lag 1 day (previous day) was associated with 0.46% (95% confidence interval 0.36% to 0.5…

All-organic device with integrated chemical filter dedicated to the selective measurement of NO2 in air

2010

Abstract An original organic semiconductor gas sensor devoted to the selective monitoring of nitrogen dioxide in air has been successfully developed. This device combines the great sensitivity and the partial selectivity toward oxidizing gases of a molecular organic semiconductor, copper phthalocyanine, with the O3 filtering selectivity of an organic material, indigo. Experimental measurements highlight filtering yield of indigo close to 100% toward O3 and lower than 10% for NO2. Nanometric indigo layers were realized for the first time by thermal evaporation and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy. Such all-organic device exhibits a high NO2 sensitivity for low concentrations, a resolution…

Air pollution, residential greenness and metabolic dysfunction during early pregnancy in the infancia y medio ambiente (Inma) cohort

2021

Despite extensive study, the role of air pollution in gestational diabetes remains unclear, and there is limited evidence of the beneficial impact of residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy. We used data from mothers in the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project from 2003–2008. We obtained spatiotemporally resolved estimates of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposures in early pregnancy and estimated residential greenness using satellite-based Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 100, 300 and 500 m buffers surrounding the mother’s residence. We applied logistic regression models to evaluate associations between each o…

Hydrodynamics of the cocurrent downflow of a gas and a foaming liquid through a packed bed. Part I. Estimation of the transition boundary between the…

2004

Abstract In the study the results of investigations are presented aimed at determining such values of the operating parameters for which the change of the hydrodynamic regime occurs from the gas continuous flow (GCF) to the pulsing flow (PF). Nitrogen, helium and argon were used as the gas phase while the liquid phase was formed by the aqueous solutions of the alcohols C 1 –C 4 of the concentrations which ensured the foaming of the system. Thus a wide range of physicochemical properties of the system was covered in the experiments. The present study, as well as Part II, contain a wealth of experimental data which characterise the PF through the packing for the foam-forming systems. It is de…

Microbial community structure in soils with decomposing residues from plants with genetic modifications to lignin biosynthesis

2006

Lignin is a major determinant of the decomposition of plant materials in soils. Advances in transgenic technology have led to the possibility of modifying lignin to improve the pulping properties of plant materials for papermaking. Previous studies have shown that lignin modifications also affect the rate of plant material decay in soil. The aim of this work was to investigate short-term changes in soil microbial community structures when tobacco residues with reduced activity of enzymes in the monolignol pathway decompose. The residues from lignin-modified plants all decomposed faster than unmodified plant materials. The relative proportions of some of the structural groups of microbial ph…
