Reflexions on Mahler: Dessins, Modularity and Gauge Theories

2021

We provide a unified framework of Mahler measure, dessins d'enfants, and gauge theory. With certain physically motivated Newton polynomials from reflexive polygons, the Mahler measure and the dessin are in one-to-one correspondence. From the Mahler measure, one can construct a Hauptmodul for a congruence subgroup of the modular group, which contains the subgroup associated to the dessin. In brane tilings and quiver gauge theories, the modular Mahler flow gives a natural resolution of the inequivalence amongst the three different complex structures $\tau_{R,G,B}$. We also study how, in F-theory, 7-branes and their monodromies arise in the context of dessins. Moreover, we give a dictionary on…

Anode current saturation of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs

2018

We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coa…

DIVERSIFICATION OF HIPPO SIGNALING COMPONENTS IN SELECTED METAZOAN SPECIES

Diagnosing HIV infection using flow cytometry: From antigenic analyses to a specifically dedicated bead-based assay to measure viral load.

2009

SINCE the discovery of HIV in 1984 (1,2), millions have been infected and have died of AIDS. In 2006, the World Health Organization identified 40 million HIV-infected subjects, noting that antiretroviral therapy was required throughout the world (Fig. 1; http://www.who.int/hiv/data/en/index.html). Today, the situation is very similar and the HIV pandemic remains a major world health problem (3). The treatment of AIDS with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) involves regular monitoring of different blood parameters, requiring the development of convenient and accurate methods that can evaluate HIV infection even in resource-poor countries (4,5). In addition to CD4 cell count, which …

Microfabrication of hybrid fluid membrane for microengines

2015

International audience; This paper describes the microfabrication and dynamic characterization of thick membranes providing a technological solution for microengines. The studied membranes are called hybrid fluid-membrane (HFM) and consist of two thin membranes that encapsulate an incompressible fluid. This work details the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scalable fabrication and characterization of HFMs. The membranes are composite structures based on Silicon spiral springs embedded in a polymer (RTV silicone). The anodic bonding of multiple stacks of Si/glass structures, the fluid filling and the sealing have been demonstrated. Various HFMs were successfully fabricated and their dyna…

Branch Points of Algebraic Functions and the Beginnings of Modern Knot Theory

1995

Many of the key ideas which formed modern topology grew out of “normal research” in one of the mainstream fields of 19th-century mathematical thinking, the theory of complex algebraic functions. These ideas were eventually divorced from their original context. The present study discusses an example illustrating this process. During the years 1895-1905, the Austrian mathematician, Wilhelm Wirtinger, tried to generalize Felix Klein's view of algebraic functions to the case of several variables. An investigation of the monodromy behavior of such functions in the neighborhood of singular points led to the first computation of a knot group. Modern knot theory was then formed after a shift in mat…
