Self-powered IoT Device based on Energy Harvesting for Remote Applications
2018
In this paper, we present the design and prototype implementation of self-powered Internet of Things (IoT) device based on energy harvesting from a small solar panel of size 63mm x 63mm and 0.36W for remote applications. These IoT devices can be deployed in remote places within the range of a gateway. A complete proof of concept IoT device based on ambient energy harvesting is designed, prototyped and tested with super capacitors and Lithium cells in star topology. Based on the measurements, the IoT device can potentially last for one year with 55 seconds transmission interval with the fully charged 120mAh coin cell battery. On the other hand, a fully charged single 5F supercapacitor lasts …
Binary distributions of concentric rings
2014
We introduce families of jointly symmetric, binary distributions that are generated over directed star graphs whose nodes represent variables and whose edges indicate positive dependences. The families are parametrized in terms of a single parameter. It is an outstanding feature of these distributions that joint probabilities relate to evenly spaced concentric rings. Kronecker product characterizations make them computationally attractive for a large number of variables. We study the behavior of different measures of dependence and derive maximum likelihood estimates when all nodes are observed and when the inner node is hidden.
Binding isotope effects as a tool for distinguishing hydrophobic and hydrophilic binding sites of HIV-1 RT.
2014
The current treatment for HIV-1 infected patients consists of a cocktail of inhibitors, in an attempt to improve the potency of the drugs by adding the possible effects of each supplied compound. In this contribution, nine different inhibitors of HIV-1 RT, one of the three key proteins responsible for the virus replication, have been selected to develop and test a computational protocol that allows getting a deep insight into the inhibitors’ binding mechanism. The interaction between the inhibitors and the protein have been quantified by computing binding free energies through FEP calculations, while a more detailed characterization of the kind of inhibitor–protein interactions is based on …

Two fungal lanostane derivatives as phospholipase A2 inhibitors.
1996
The hydroalcoholic extract of Poria cocos and two lanostane derivatives isolated from it, pachymic acid (1) and dehydrotumulosic acid (2), were active as inhibitors of phospholipase A2 from snake venom when a polarographic method was used. Dehydrotumulosic acid exhibited an IC50 of 0.845 mM. These two compounds are structurally related to certain triterpenoids from Ganoderma and Schinus that have previously been described as competitive inhibitors of phospholipase A2. These comprise a new group of natural potential antiinflammatory agents due to their interaction with that enzyme.
Towards Waltheriones C and D: Synthesis of the Oxabicyclic Core
2017
A route to the oxabicyclic cores of the HIV cytoprotective quinolone alkaloids, waltheriones C and D, is described. The approach relies on a stereospecific transannular bromoetherification followed by reductive debromination. The route can also be rendered enantioselective via enzymatic reduction of a key intermediate (>99:1 er).
Human interleukin-4 enhances stromal cell-dependent hematopoiesis: costimulation with stem cell factor
1994
Abstract Interleukin-4 (IL-4) has distinct hematopoietic activities, primarily as a costimulant with other cytokines to enhance colony formation of hematopoietic progenitors. We investigated the influence of IL-4 on stromal cell-supported long-term cultures (LTCs) of normal human bone marrow. Addition of IL-4 to LTCs of unseparated bone marrow or highly enriched CD34+ cells resulted in a significant increase of myeloid progenitors in the nonadherent, as well as in the stromal cell-adherent cell populations. In contrast, the total cell number was not influenced by IL-4, suggesting a selective effect on primitive progenitor cells. Cord blood cells or CD34+ bone marrow cells were incubated wit…
Gingival and submandibular lymph node metastasis of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma
2010
Introduction: Metastatic tumors of oral and maxillofacial region compromise 1% of all malignant oral neoplasms. Most commonly affect the jaw bone and less commonly intraoral soft tissues. They originate mainly from primary tumors of lung, breast, colon-rectum, prostate and kidney. Case report: a 77 years old man with history of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and liver metastasis. Two years later of being free of disease, he presented with submandi- bular lymphadenopathy and a gingival mass in right upper jaw. Fine needle aspiration of the node and biopsy of the gingival mass were performed. The cytological smears showed cohesive cell groups on a necrotic background. Biopsy examination showed …
Comparison of Prognostic Signatures in Node-Negative Tamoxifen-Treated Breast Cancer Patients.
2009
Abstract Background: A number of molecular signatures have been published to aid breast cancer prognosis and therapy response prediction. A 76-gene signature has been developed in a node-negative patient cohort that did not receive systemic therapy.1 Another prognostic 97-gene signature measures predominantly proliferation-associated genes.2 Finally, a 21-gene signature has been developed for node-negative and estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer patients treated with tamoxifen in the adjuvant setting.3 Here we compare the prognostic performance of all three published algorithms in a cohort of 189 node-negative breast cancer patients treated with tamoxifen.Materials and Methods: Fresh-f…
