The Max-Product Algorithm Viewed as Linear Data-Fusion: A Distributed Detection Scenario
2019
In this paper, we disclose the statistical behavior of the max-product algorithm configured to solve a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation problem in a network of distributed agents. Specifically, we first build a distributed hypothesis test conducted by a max-product iteration over a binary-valued pairwise Markov random field and show that the decision variables obtained are linear combinations of the local log-likelihood ratios observed in the network. Then, we use these linear combinations to formulate the system performance in terms of the false-alarm and detection probabilities. Our findings indicate that, in the hypothesis test concerned, the optimal performance of the max-product a…
MAC Design for WiFi Infrastructure Networks: A Game-Theoretic Approach
2011
In WiFi networks, mobile nodes compete for accessing a shared channel by means of a random access protocol called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). Although this protocol is in principle fair, since all the stations have the same probability to transmit on the channel, it has been shown that unfair behaviors may emerge in actual networking scenarios because of non-standard configurations of the nodes. Due to the proliferation of open source drivers and programmable cards, enabling an easy customization of the channel access policies, we propose a game-theoretic analysis of random access schemes. Assuming that each node is rational and implements a best response strategy, we show that…
Formation of lead by reduction of electrodeposited PbO2: comparison between bulk films and nanowires fabrication
2012
Metallic lead was deposited, both in form of bulk films and nanowire array within pores of anodic alumina membranes, following a new two-step procedure, consisting in anodic electrodeposition of α-PbO2, followed by its reduction to metallic lead. This method allows to overcome drawbacks of the “direct” electrodeposition of lead from aqueous solution, consisting, essentially, in the formation of dendritic deposits. Here, we report the comparison between results obtained in the two cases and discuss the kinetic of oxide reduction both for films and nanowires. Deposit morphology and structure are also discussed. We have found that reduction of α-PbO2 films proceeds always at high speed and uni…
Schistosomiasis and water-related practices in school girls in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
2010
There is increasing evidence of an association between female genital Schistosoma haematobium infection and HIV. In KwaZulu-Natal, we aimed to explore girls' water contact practice and to determine...
Cold-Atom-Induced Control of an Optomechanical Device
2010
We consider a cavity with a vibrating end mirror and coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate. The cavity field mediates the interplay between mirror and collective oscillations of the atomic density. We study the implications of this dynamics and the possibility of an indirect diagnostic. Our predictions can be observed in a realistic setup that is central to the current quest for mesoscopic quantumness.
SADmote: A Robust and Cost-Effective Device for Environmental Monitoring
2012
Time to deployment for wireless sensor networks could be reduced by using commercial sensor nodes. However, this may lead to suboptimal flexibility, power consumption and cost of the system. Our pilot deployment for precision agriculture and fruit growing research showed similar conclusions and outlined the design decisions leading to SADmote: a new sensor node for environmental monitoring. It was evaluated both in the lab and field, showing improved energy consumption over commercial solutions such as Tmote Sky and Waspmote.
Efficient and portable acceleration of quantum chemical many-body methods in mixed floating point precision using OpenACC compiler directives
2016
It is demonstrated how the non-proprietary OpenACC standard of compiler directives may be used to compactly and efficiently accelerate the rate-determining steps of two of the most routinely applied many-body methods of electronic structure theory, namely the second-order M{\o}ller-Plesset (MP2) model in its resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximated form and the (T) triples correction to the coupled cluster singles and doubles model (CCSD(T)). By means of compute directives as well as the use of optimized device math libraries, the operations involved in the energy kernels have been ported to graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators, and the associated data transfers correspondingly o…
Electrosynthesis of 3,3′,5,5’-tetramethyl-2,2′-biphenol in flow
2020
Abstract3,3′,5,5’-Tetramethyl-2,2′-biphenol is well known as an outstanding building block for ligands in transition-metal catalysis and is therefore of particular industrial interest. The electro-organic method is a powerful, sustainable, and efficient alternative to conventional synthetic approaches to obtain symmetric and non-symmetric biphenols. Here, we report the successive scale-up of the dehydrogenative anodic homocoupling of 2,4-dimethylphenol (4) from laboratory scale to the technically relevant scale in highly modular narrow gap flow electrolysis cells. The electrosynthesis was optimized in a manner that allows it to be easily adopted to different scales such as laboratory, semit…
Assessing the Electrochemical Performance of Different Nanostructured CeO2 Samples as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries
2021
In this work, six samples of CeO2 are successfully prepared by diverse synthesis routes leading to different microstructures regarding both morphology and particle size. The structural and microstructural characteristics presented by the samples and their influence on the electrochemical response of the prepared anodes are analyzed. In particular, the Ce-CMK3 sample, synthesized from a mesoporous carbon obtained through a CMK3 silica template, displays an enhanced electrochemical response. Thus, capacity values of ~220 mA h g−1 are obtained at a current rate of 0.155 A g−1 after 50 cycles and an excellent cyclability at intermediate current densities. On the other hand, it is observed that …
