We discuss, and compare, two simple methods that provide coordinates of a point in the vicinity of one inclusion within some object with homogeneous electrical properties. In the context of nondestructive testing such an inclusion may correspond to a material defect, whereas in medicine this may correspond to a lesion in the brain, to name only two possible applications. Both methods use only one pair of voltage/current measurements on the entire boundary of the object to determine a single pair of coordinates that is considered to be close to the center of the inclusion. Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges, and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes an SHM method based on UGWs and outlier analysis devoted to the detection and quantification of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The external surface of stainless steel containers used for the interim storage of nuclear material may be subject to Atmospherically Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking (AISCC). The requirement to increase inspection speeds for non-destructive testing (NDT) of composite aerospace parts is common to many manufacturers. The prevalence of complex curved surfaces in the industry provides significant motivation for the use of 6 axis robots for deployment of NDT probes in these inspections. A new system for robot deployed ultrasonic inspection of composite aerospace components is presented. This paper presents an approach for estimation of ultrasonic time-of-flight (TOF) within a Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) context. The presented method leverages recent advances in the field of Compressive Sensing (CS), which makes use of sparsity in a transform domain of a signal in order to reduce the number of samples required to store it. CS achieves this through a two key ideas: random matrix projections, and l1-penalised linear regression. In this article, an approach based on an array of macro-fiber composite (MFC) transducers arranged as rosettes is proposed for high-velocity impact location on isotropic and composite aircraft panels. Each rosette, using the directivity behavior of three MFC sensors, provides the direction of an incoming wave generated by the impact source as a principal strain angle. A minimum of two rosettes is sufficient to determine the impact location by intersecting the wave directions. Interpretation of NDTdata is crucial in any Airport Pavement Management System (APMS), in order to implement strategies to maintain airport pavementssince they allow to estimate their remaining life and related maintenance needs and activities. In this paper, the AntColony Optimization algorithmwasused for backcalculation of pavement moduli from surface deflection data. The algorithm’s performances are illustrated and improvement in prediction quality is demonstrated both in terms of goodness of fitness and computational effort. Moreover, it is proved that the proposed algorithm is also able to predict layer thicknesses, taking into account their variation too.
