4-Hydroxynonenal-Induced Relaxation of Human Mesenteric Arteries1

1997

The effect of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), a circulating lipid peroxidation product, on the vascular tone of human mesenteric arteries is studied. 4-HNE promotes relaxation of human mesenteric arterial rings in a concentration-dependent manner. Removal of the endothelium or treatment with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME; 10(-4) M) partially prevented 4-HNE-induced relaxation, thus suggesting the intervention of nitric oxide from endothelial origin in the vascular effects of 4-HNE.

Darstellung und Reaktionen von 2-Methylen-canrenon

1995

Synthesis and Reactions of 2-Methylene-canrenone Starting from the Mannich salt 1 of the aldosterone antagonist canrenone or from 2-methy…

Hyperinsulinemia, hyperproinsulinemia and insulin resistance in the metabolic syndrome.

1996

For better comprehension of the metabolic syndrome, it is necessary to differentiate the effect of insulin on glucose metabolism on the one hand, and on other metabolic activities on the other hand. Whereas glucose utilization is affected by insulin resistance, the effect of insulin on lipid metabolism, ion and aminoacid transport does not seem to be diminished. Lipid metabolism, however, seems to play a crucial role in the induction of the vicious cycle. Increased energy and fat ingestion may be due to an increased number of galanin secreting cells in the hypothalamus. The excessive fat intake results in an increased rate of release of insulin and increased influx of triglycerides into the…

Mitochondrial complex I impairment in leukocytes from type 2 diabetic patients.

2011

Diabetes is associated with oxidative stress. This study evaluated the rates of oxidative stress and mitochondrial impairment in type 2 diabetes patients. The study population consisted of 182 diabetic patients and 50 body-composition- and age-matched controls. We assessed anthropometric and metabolic parameters and mitochondrial function by evaluating mitochondrial oxygen (O2) consumption, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, glutathione (GSH) levels, GSH/GSSG ratio, mitochondrial membrane potential, and mitochondrial complex I activity in polymorphonuclear cells from diabetes type 2 patients. We found an increase in waist circumference and augmented serum levels of triglycerides, pro…

Cytotoxicity of natural products and derivatives toward MCF-7 cell monolayers and cancer stem-like mammospheres

2015

Abstract Although cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) are rare, they can enter a non-proliferative or dormant state and resist therapy. Furthermore, quiescent CSCs are responsible for metastases that can appear after curative surgical treatment of a primary tumor. Because of drug resistance of CSCs, the development of novel therapies is urgently required that specifically target CSCs. Purpose The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential of a panel of natural products and derivatives to inhibit CSC-enriched mammospheres of MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Methods CD44high/CD24low cells were identified by flow cytometry and maintained as mammospheres. As a control, we used two clinically…

Nel labirinto della metafisica. Gli sviluppi possibili (e auspicabili) della metafisica nel XXI secolo

2019

The present and future of metaphysics in the 21st century: in the book edited by Enrique Romerales some world-class metaphysical philosophers confront each other and converse with us about what metaphysics is today. Analytical and continental philosophers show some considerations on the general and particular topics of metaphysics: e.g. what is the relationship between metaphysics and ontology? What advances can there be in reflection of metaphysics? The answers are very different but all the authors share the conviction that metaphysics is inescapable: the center of philosophical thought is metaphysics. The papers contained in the book offer the chance to examine and reflect upon such matt…

Inhibition of xanthine oxidase to prevent statin-induced myalgia and rhabdomiolysis

2015

Although statins remain the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy for reducing the burden of atherosclerotic vascular disease, their administration has been associated with muscle-related adverse effects, including myalgia and rhabdomyolysis. Such adverse events are probably due to reduced antioxidant defenses associated with fewer intermediate metabolites in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. We hypothesize that the concomitant inhibition of xanthine oxidase via coadministration of allopurinol with statins could diminish reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related muscle damage, which would have in turn have positive effects on both the incidence of muscle-related adverse events and cardiovascul…

Bright Visible Luminescence in Silica Nanoparticles

2011

International audience; We demonstrate that a porous film of silica nanoparticles emits a bright visible luminescence associated with defects stabilized by oxygen chemisorption at oxygen deficient center sites. Time-resolved spectra excited by a tunable laser allow us to distinguish the luminescence at 1.99 eV, characteristic of the nonbridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC) (Si-O)3 Si-O*, and a fast and a slow emission: the first (lifetime τ ≈ 25 ns) is peaked at 2.27 eV with an excitation spectrum centered at 5.5 eV; the second (τ ≈ 7.5 μs) is peaked at 2.41 eV and is excited around 3.2 and 5.2 eV. Reaction in an air atmosphere leads to the disappearance of the NBOHC luminescence and of the …
