Effect of hyperthermia on tumor blood flow.

Differences in blood perfusion rates between tumors and normal tissue can be utilized to selectively heat many solid tumors. Blood flow in normal tissues is considerably increased at temperatures commonly applied during localized hyperthermia. In contrast, tumor blood flow may respond to localized heat typically in two different blood flow patterns: Flow may either decrease continuously with increasing exposure time and/or temperature or flow may exhibit a transient increase followed by a decline. External photon radiation treatment for prostate cancer: Uncomplicated and cancer-free control probability assessment of 36 plans

[Purpose] To perform a systematic and thorough assessment, using the Uncomplicated and Cancer-Free Control Probability (UCFCP) function, of a broad range of photon prostate cancer RT treatments, on the same scenario (a unique pelvic CT set). UCFCP considers, together with the probabilities of local tumour control (TCP) and deterministic (late) sequelae (NTCP), the second primary cancer risk (SPCR) due to photon and neutron peripheral doses.

The Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) belongs to the Ras-homologous (Rho) family of small GTPases, which transduce signals from the outside to the inside of a cell. Rac1 becomes activated upon ligand binding of a variety of receptors, including receptor tyrosine kinases and heterotrimeric G-protein-coupled receptors. Quantitative bioluminescence imaging--a method for the detection of metabolite distributions in frozen tissues

A novel technique allows for measurement of metabolite distributions in tissue cryosections at a microscopic level using bioluminescence, single photon imaging, and computerized image analysis. Metabolites, such as ATP, glucose and lactate are registered in absolute concentration units, and the respective images can be correlated with each other and with histological structures by specific algorithms. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging is increasingly used in radiotherapy environment as well as for staging and assessing treatment response. The ability to classify PET tissues, as normal versus abnormal tissues, is crucial for medical analysis and interpretation. Lack of binding of gestodene to estrogen receptor in human breast cancer tissue

Competition studies with progesterone and estradiol receptors of human myometrial tissue as well as of mammary cancer tissue showed that gestodene bound with high affinity to the progesterone receptor, as did other synthetic and natural progestogens. However, gestodene did not bind to the estradiol receptor. The relative binding affinities of all tested synthetic and natural ligands showed no organ-specific differences and no differences between neoplastically transformed and normal tissues.
