Multivariate exponential smoothing: A Bayesian forecast approach based on simulation

2009

This paper deals with the prediction of time series with correlated errors at each time point using a Bayesian forecast approach based on the multivariate Holt-Winters model. Assuming that each of the univariate time series comes from the univariate Holt-Winters model, all of them sharing a common structure, the multivariate Holt-Winters model can be formulated as a traditional multivariate regression model. This formulation facilitates obtaining the posterior distribution of the model parameters, which is not analytically tractable: simulation is needed. An acceptance sampling procedure is used in order to obtain a sample from this posterior distribution. Using Monte Carlo integration the …

Quasi-isometries associated to A-contractions

2014

Abstract Given two operators A and T ( A ≥ 0 , ‖ A ‖ = 1 ) on a Hilbert space H satisfying T ⁎ A T ≤ A , we study the maximum subspace of H which reduces M = A 1 / 2 T to a quasi-isometry, that is on which the equality M ⁎ M = M ⁎ 2 M 2 holds. In some cases, this subspace coincides with the maximum subspace which reduces M to a normal partial isometry, for example when A = T T ⁎ , and in particular if T ⁎ is a cohyponormal contraction. In this case the corresponding subspace can be completely described in terms of asymptotic limit of the contraction T. When M is quasinormal and M ⁎ M = A then the former above quoted subspace reduces to the kernel of A − A 2 . The case of an arbitrary contra…

State-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group and coupled cluster theory studies of the nitrogen binding curve.

2004

We study the nitrogen binding curve with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and single-reference and multireference coupled cluster (CC) theory. Our DMRG calculations use up to 4000 states and our single-reference CC calculations include up to full connected hextuple excitations. Using the DMRG, we compute an all-electron benchmark nitrogen binding curve, at the polarized, valence double-zeta level (28 basis functions), with an estimated accuracy of 0.03mE_h. We also assess the performance of more approximate DMRG and CC theories across the nitrogen curve. We provide an analysis of the relative strengths and merits of the DMRG and CC theory under different correlation condition…

Coherent control of stimulated emission inside one-dimensional Photonic Crystals

2005

In this paper, the quasinormal mode (QNM) theory is applied to discuss the quantum problem of an atom embedded inside a one-dimensional (1D) photonic band gap (PBG) cavity pumped by two counterpropagating laser beams. The e.m. field is quantized in terms of the QNMs in the 1D PBG and the atom modeled as a two-level system is assumed to be weakly coupled to just one of the QNMs. The main result of the paper is that the decay time depends on the position of the dipole inside the cavity, and can be controlled by the phase difference of the two laser beams. © 2005 The American Physical Society

Error calculation for the PSA quotient.

2008

Abstract Objective Prostate specific antigen (PSA) assays have significant measurement errors, but the error associated with the PSA quotient (free to total PSA) often remains unknown. Methods We used both Gaussian error calculation and measurement of imprecision to investigate the level of error associated with the PSA quotient. Results Surprisingly, we found that the error of the PSA quotient at low levels is markedly smaller than that of the total PSA value. Conclusions The PSA quotient should be calculated and considered as a clinically relevant value.

In everyday life, one of the most frequent activities involves accelerating and decelerating an object held in precision grip. In many contexts, humans scale and synchronize their grip force, normal to the finger/object contact, in anticipation of the expected tangential load force, resulting from the combination of the gravitational and the inertial forces. In many contexts, grip force and load force are linearly coupled. A few studies have examined how we adjust the parameters - gain and offset - of this linear relationship. However, the question remains open as to how the brain adjusts grip force regardless of whether load force is generated by different combinations of weight and inerti…

Cryotherapy for liver tumors: current status, perspectives, clinical results, and review of literature.

2004

Cryotherapy has gained importance as a locally ablative treatment option for patients with non-resectable liver tumors, especially metastases from colorectal cancer. We have used this technique since 1996 for the treatment of 77 patients with malignant liver tumors. Patient data was prospectively recorded and follow-up was until September 2002 or death. Fifty-five patients had colorectal cancer liver metastases, 16 metastases from other primaries and 6 had hepatoma. Forty patients had cryotherapy only and 37 had an additional liver resection. Morbidity and mortality were 22% and 1.3%, respectively. In 68% of patients with colorectal liver metastases and an elevated serum carcinoembryonic a…

Breast-cancer predisposition in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1

2014

Women with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 related to mutations in the gene encoding menin (MEN1) have approximately twice the risk of breast cancer as do women in the general population.

Correction:Cancer risks by gene, age, and gender in 6350 carriers of pathogenic mismatch repair variants: findings from the Prospective Lynch Syndrom…

2020

Lynch syndrome (LS) results from pathogenic variants in the mismatch repair (MMR) genes and is the most common hereditary cancer syndrome, affecting an estimated 1 in 300 individuals. Pathogenic variants in each of the MMR genes path_MLH1, path_MSH2, path_MSH6, and path_PMS2 result in different risks for cancers in organs including the colorectum, endometrium, ovaries, stomach, small bowel, bile duct, pancreas, and upper urinary tract. Accurate estimates of these risks are essential for planning appropriate approaches to the prevention or early diagnosis of cancers but the robustness of previous studies has been limited by factors including retrospective design,1,2 lack of validation in ind…

Impact of NPM1/FLT3-ITD genotypes defined by the 2017 European LeukemiaNet in patients with acute myeloid leukemia

2020

Contains fulltext : 218279.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) harboring FLT3 internal tandem duplications (ITDs) have poor outcomes, in particular AML with a high (>/=0.5) mutant/wild-type allelic ratio (AR). The 2017 European LeukemiaNet (ELN) recommendations defined 4 distinct FLT3-ITD genotypes based on the ITD AR and the NPM1 mutational status. In this retrospective exploratory study, we investigated the prognostic and predictive impact of the NPM1/FLT3-ITD genotypes categorized according to the 2017 ELN risk groups in patients randomized within the RATIFY trial, which evaluated the addition of midostaurin to standard chemotherapy. The 4 …
