A scientific approach to anti-ageing therapies: state of the art.

A lasting dream of human beings is to reverse or at least postpone ageing. During the last years, an increasing number of scientific meetings, articles, and books have been devoted to anti-ageing therapies. This subject, full of misleading, simplistic, or wrong ideas, is very popular among the general public, whose imagery has been fascinated by all possible tools to delay ageing, getting immortality. Here, we discuss anti-ageing strategies aimed not to rejuvenate but to slow ageing and delay the onset of age-related diseases. These approaches should be able to substantially slow down the ageing process, extending our productive, youthful lives.

Plasma levels and cerebrospinal fluid penetration by duloxetine in a patient with a non-fatal overdose during a suicide attempt

Duloxetine is a potent and selective inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake with weak activity on dopamine reuptake (Wong et al. 1993). Daily doses of 60 mg are effective in the acute treatment of major depression. Duloxetine is extensively metabolized by cytochrome P450 isoenzymes (CYP) 1A2 and to a lesser extent 2D6 (Lobo et al. 2008) to numerous non-active metabolites. Maximum plasma concentration occurs after 6 h, steady-state within 3 d and the mean terminal half-life is 12 h. Comparison of Paroxetine and Maprotiline in Minor Depression

Whilst the efficacy of paroxetine has been demonstrated in MDD, its clinical utility in minor depression has not been established. This study assesses the antidepressant efficacy of paroxetine in patients meeting RDC criteria for minor depression. All patients scored 13 points on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) at baseline. After a 3 day washout period, patients were randomised to receive paroxetine 20–40mg/day or maprotiline 100-150mg/day, dose being titrated according to clinical response after 3 weeks treatment at the lower doses. Photoluminescence immunosensor based on bovine leukemia virus proteins immobilized on the ZnO nanorods

Bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) proteins gp51, which are serving as antigens for specific antibodies against BLV proteins (anti-gp51), were applied as biological recognition part in the design of immunosensor devoted for the determination of anti-gp51. The efficiency of the immobilization of BLV proteins gp51 on ZnO nanorod (ZnO- NR) modified glass (ZnO-NR/glass) surface was evaluated. Isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in silica: experimental estimation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous spectral widths

We report nanosecond time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on the isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in amorphous silica related to silicon, germanium and tin atoms, which are responsible of fluorescence activities at approximately 4 eV under excitation at approximately 5 eV. The dependence of the first moment of their emission band on time and that of the radiative decay lifetime on emission energy are analyzed within a theoretical model able to describe the effects introduced by disorder on the optical properties of the defects. Relaxation processes of point defects in vitreous silica from femtosecond to nanoseconds

We studied ultrafast relaxation of localized excited states at Ge-related oxygen deficient centers in silica using femtosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy. The relaxation dynamics exhibits a biexponential decay, which we ascribe to the departure from the Frank-Condon region of the first excited singlet state in 240 fs, followed by cooling in ∼10 ps. At later times, a nonexponential relaxation spanning up to 40 ns occurs, which is fitted with an inhomogeneous distribution of nonradiative relaxation rates, following a chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom. Time structure of the extensive air shower front

Abstract The GREX/COVER_PLASTEX experiment has measured the temporal and spatial fine structure of the EAS disc at sea level in a new and original way, using resistive plate counter detectors for direct measurements of the arrival time of each particle crossing the detector. Data were taken at EAS core distances up to 100 m for shower size N > 105 (PeV energy range). Arrival times of shower particles were measured with nanosecond accuracy. More than 450000 air shower events have been included in this analysis.

Electromagnetic Transition Rate Measurements in theN=80 Isotone,138Ce

A study of intrinsic state halflife measurements in the N=80 nucleus 138Ce has been made using the 130Te(12C,4n)138Ce fusion evaporation reaction at beam energy of 56 MeV. The fast-timing gamma-ray coincidence method was used with a mixed LaBr3(Ce)-HPGe array to establish the lifetimes of the yrast 6+ state at 2294 keV, the Iπ=5− state at 2218 keV, the Iπ=11+ state at 3943 keV and the 14+ state at that at 5312 keV, all of which are in the sub nanosecond regime. Reduced transition probabilities have been calculated for the electromagnetic decays from these states.
