Multifuctionality in Molecular Conductors and Magnets

2004

Building multifuntionality in a material is a hot focus of research in contemporary materials science. Molecule-based materials offer unique opportunities in this context since the versatility of molecular chemistry provides the possibility to design materials that combine in the same crystal lattice two or more solid-state properties such as ferromagnetism, conductivity, superconductivity or non-linear optics. This opens new possibilities for potential applications in molecular electronics. A possible approach to reach this goal consists of building up hybrid solids formed by two molecular networks, such as anion/cation salts or host/guest solids, where each network furnishes distinct prop…

Macroscopic persistent currents in laser ablated YBa2Cu3O7-x films

2011

AbstractThin films of YBa2Cu3O7-x have been produced in situ by laser ablation. As the condensation of the superconducting film is done onto hot substrates (600 - 780°C) at high oxygen pressures (~ 1 mbar), this techniques does not require any special postannealing step. Thus the total process time amounts to less than 10 min. Films were found to be polycrystalline with the c-axis preferentially oriented normal to the substrate plane on single crystalline (001) SrTiO3 and (random) ZrO2, as measured by ion channeling (Xmin = 5.5 % on SrTiO3), x-ray scattering and TEM. Complete superconducting transitions above 90 K with transition widths of about 1 K have been observed even on YSZ substrates…

Quantum phase slips in superconducting Nb nanowire networks deposited on self-assembled Si templates

2012

Robust porous silicon substrates were employed for generating interconnected networks of superconducting ultrathin Nb nanowires. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to investigate the morphology of the samples, which constitute of polycrystalline single wires with grain size of about 10 nm. The samples exhibit nonzero resistance over a broad temperature range below the critical temperature, fingerprint of phase slippage processes. The transport data are satisfactory reproduced by models describing both thermal and quantum fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter in thin homogeneous superconducting wires.

Multiple band crossings and Fermi surface topology: Role of double nonsymmorphic symmetries in MnP-type crystal structures

2019

We use relativistic ab-initio methods combined with model Hamiltonian approaches to analyze the normal-phase electronic and structural properties of the recently discovered WP superconductor. Remarkably, the outcomes of such study can be employed to set fundamental connections among WP and the CrAs and MnP superconductors belonging to the same space group. One of the key features of the resulting electronic structure is represented by the occurrence of multiple band crossings along specific high symmetry lines of the Brilloiun zone. In particular, we demonstrate that the eight-fold band degeneracy obtained along the SR path at (kx,ky)=(Pi,Pi) is due to inversion-time reversal invariance and…

Superconductivity in the Heusler Family of Intermetallics

2012

Several physical properties of the superconducting Heusler compounds, focusing on two systems (Y, Lu, Sc)Pd2Sn and APd2M, where A=Hf, Zr and M=Al, In, are summarized and compared. The analysis of the data shows the importance of the electron-phonon coupling for superconductivity in this family. We report the superconducting parameters of YPd2Sn, which has the highest Tc among all known Heusler superconductors.

Complete stabilization and improvement of the characteristics of tunnel junctions by thermal annealing

2006

We have observed that submicron sized Al--AlO{$_x$}--Al tunnel junctions can be stabilized completely by annealing them in vacuum at temperatures between $350^{\circ}$C and $450^{\circ}$C. In addition, low temperature characterization of the samples after the annealing treatment showed a marked improvement of the tunneling characteristics due to disappearance of unwanted resonances in the current. Charging energy, tunneling resistance, barrier thickness and height all increase after the treatment. The superconducting gap is not affected, but supercurrent is reduced in accordance with the increase of tunneling resistance.

Dynamics of a Ferromagnetic Particle Levitated Over a Superconductor

2018

Under conditions where the angular momentum of a ferromagnetic particle is dominated by intrinsic spin, applied torque is predicted to cause gyroscopic precession of the particle. If the particle is sufficiently isolated from the environment, a measurement of spin precession can potentially yield sensitivity to torque beyond the standard quantum limit. Levitation of a micron-scale ferromagnetic particle above a superconductor is a possible method of near frictionless suspension enabling observation of ferromagnetic particle precession and ultrasensitive torque measurements. We experimentally investigate the dynamics of a micron-scale ferromagnetic particle levitated above a superconducting …

Spin–orbit coupling effects on the electronic properties of the pressure-induced superconductor CrAs

2019

We present the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the low-energy bands and Fermi surface of the recently discovered pressure-induced superconductor CrAs. We apply the L\"owdin down-folding procedure to a tight-binding hamiltonian that includes the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction, originating from the Cr 3d electrons as well as from As 4p ones. Our results indicate that As contributions have negligible effects, whereas the modifications to the band structure and the Fermi surface can be mainly ascribed to the Cr contribution. We show that the inclusion of the spin-orbit interaction allows for a selective removal of the band degeneracy due to the crystal symmetries, along specific high symmet…
