Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Films Filled with Halloysite Nanotubes/Wax Hybrid Microspheres
2021
The design of novel nanocomposite films based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and wax/halloysite hybrid microspheres has been reported. In particular, we first prepared wax/clay Pickering emulsions which were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and microscopy. SEM images allowed more detailed insights on the nanotubes disposition at the wax/water interface, acting as an outer stabilizing shell. Therefore, the cellulosic biopolymer was added, and it was found that HPC enhances the colloidal stability of the particles, preventing their coalescence and sedimentation. The preparation of the composite films was carried out by the solvent casting method, which enabled the development of …
Fracture Resistance of Partial Indirect Restorations Made With CAD/CAM Technology. A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
2019
Background: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the fracture resistance and survival rate of partial indirect restorations inlays, onlays, and overlays fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology from ceramics, composite resin, resin nanoceramic, or hybrid ceramic and to analyze the influence of proximal box elevation on fracture resistance. Materials and methods: This systematic review was based on guidelines proposed by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). An electronic search was conducted in databases US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health …
Recent progress in optical and electrochemical biosensors for sensing of Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin
2018
Abstract Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein which produced from Clostridium botulinum and related species and it block acetylcholine release from presynaptic nerve terminals at the neuromuscular junctions. This toxin is life threatening for millions of people and growing menace to society since causing human botulism. Enzymatic activity of Botulinum neurotoxin within the cell made it hazardous and lead to flaccid paralysis. However, there isn't any reliable and precise remedy for this toxin. Therefore, there is an urgent need for early detection of this toxin in a fast and meticulous way with a robust and cost-effective relationship for real-time monitoring of Botulinum neurotoxin. Sev…
Behaviour-modifying compounds for management of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliver).
2014
BACKGROUND: Populations of red palm weevil (RPW), a severe pest of palms in Mediterranean countries, might be limited by semiochemical-based behaviour-disrupting methods. We evaluated the effects of electroantennogram (EAG)-active plant volatiles on the behaviour of RPWs from Italy and Israel. In field experiments, α-pinene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and 1-octen-3-ol were tested for their ability to disrupt attraction to pheromone-kairomone and molasses baited traps. Those that were found to be disruptive in the field were evaluated in a laboratory choice bioassay in individual cages for their effect on RPW female feeding and oviposition. RESULTS: Field experiments showed reduced captur…
Power monitoring in dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides with internal Wheatstone bridges
2013
We report on monitoring the mode power in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) by measuring the resistance of gold electrodes, supporting the DLSPPW mode propagation, with internal (on-chip) Wheatstone bridges. The investigated DLSPPW configuration consisted of 1-μm-thick and 10-μm-wide cycloaliphatic acrylate polymer ridges tapered laterally to a 1-μm-wide ridge placed on a 50-nm-thin and 4-um wide gold stripe, all supported by a ~1.7-µm-thick Cytop layer deposited on a Si wafer. The fabricated DLSPPW power monitors were characterized at telecom wavelengths, showing very high responsivities reaching up to ~6.4 μV/μW (for a bias voltage of 245 mV) and the operati…
Multianalytical characterization of pigments from funerary artefacts belongs to the Chupicuaro Culture (Western Mexico): Oldest Maya blue and cinnaba…
2019
Abstract The colours used in Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica to decorate walls, codices or artefacts have been the subject of numerous studies, with particular attention to Maya blue, red and white pigments. However, most of these studies have been focused on emblematic cultures of the Classic period (ca. 300–1000 CE), such as Teotihuacan and Maya cultures. This work proposes a new chronology of the preparation and use of these pigments, particularly Maya blue, by analysing samples of the Pre-Classic period (ca. 1800 BCE–300 CE). The samples belong to ceremonial artefacts decorated with blue, red and white pigments, in a funerary context from the Chupicuaro culture, which was developed between 600…
Spray pyrolysis synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 heterostructure with white light emission
2020
[EN] Molybdates are inorganic materials with great potential in white phosphors application, being an alternative to traditional lighting sources. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) powders with white light-emitting properties. Using X-ray diffraction, the formation of the monoclinic beta-MgMoO4 phase was observed for x = 0 and the formation of the tetragonal scheelite phase of SrMoO4 was observed for x = 1. The formation of a heterostructure composed of both phases was found for compositions with x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75. Scanning and trasmission electron microscopy images showed that the Mg1-xSrxMoO4 particles exhibi…
Hyaluronan alkyl derivatives-based electrospun membranes for potential guided bone regeneration: Fabrication, characterization and in vitro osteoindu…
2020
Item does not contain fulltext The aim of the work was to determine the effects of the chemical functionalization of hyaluronic acid (HA) with pendant aliphatic tails at different lengths and free amino groups in terms of chemical reactivity, degradation rate, drug-eluting features, and surface properties when processed as electrospun membranes (EM) evaluating the osteoinductive potential for a possible application as guided bone regeneration (GBR). To this end, a series of HA derivatives with different aliphatic tails (DD-Cx mol% ≈ 12.0 mol%) and decreasing derivatization of free amino groups (DD(EDA) mol% from 70.0 to 30.0 mol%) were first synthesized, namely Hn. Then dexamethasone-loaded…
Efficient growth of sub-micrometric MOF crystals inside the channels of AAO membranes
2013
International audience; A dynamic step-by-step methodology has been implemented to grow the HKUST-1 porous coordination polymer inside commercial anodic aluminium oxide membranes. Efficient crystal growth is achieved from the membrane inner walls and over the whole membrane thickness when copper acetate colloidal suspensions and benzene tricarboxylic acid solutions are forced to flow through the membrane. Sorption properties of the HKUST-1 embedded in membranes show selectivity for CO2 over CO, CH4, O2 and N2 similar to the bulk material.
Self-sufficient PV-H2 Alternative Energy Objects
2016
Energy storage becomes more important as mankind switch to renewable energy, away from fossil resources. Traditional way – batteries - offer a limited number of cycles, require regular maintenance; nevertheless gravitational storage, flywheels, compressed air are mainly large scale and expensive methods. The hydrogen as energy carrier and hydrogen fuel cells are possible option to store different amounts of energy for relatively long times with low losses. Different solutions for self-sufficient sun/wind energy objects are analysed - the solar radiation collecting systems, wind power generators, and high pressure electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production and the metal-hydride energy…
