Vitamin C Loaded Polyethylene: Synthesis and Properties of Precise Polyethylene with Vitamin C Defects via Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polycondensation
2020
A polyethylene-like polymer with an in-chain vitamin C group was synthesized by olefin metathesis polymerization. Here, we describe both the synthesis and a comprehensive physical characterization. Because of the olefin metathesis synthesis, the vitamin C groups are equidistantly arranged in the polyethylene (PE) main chain. Their separation was adjusted to 20 CH2 units. After hydrogenation, a semicrystalline polymer is obtained that is soluble in polar solvents. Because of its size and steric effect, the vitamin C acts as a chain defect, which is expelled from the crystal lattice, yielding a lamellar crystal with a homogeneous thickness corresponding to the interdefect distance. The physic…
Hybrid LEDs based on ZnO nanowire structures
2017
Abstract This paper summarized the research, development, and state of the art of hybrid ZnO nanowire LEDs, in which electroluminescence is generated at the junction between n-type doped ZnO nanowire structures and specific p-type doped polymers (in particular PEDOT, PEDOT:PSS, or PFO). Different device architectures will be reviewed and discussed with a particular emphasis on the electronic transport through the hybrid structures and the microscopic processes of light emission. Finally, a gas-phase deposition technique for conductive polymers will be presented which might help improve the performance of hybrid ZnO nanowire LEDs in the future.
In-situ synthesis of thiophene-based multifunctional polymeric networks with tunable conductivity and high photolithographic performance
2017
Abstract Design of novel multifunctional polymeric materials combining electrically conducting properties with patterning capability is a significant challenge in materials science. Herein, we report on the synthesis of multifunctional interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) by the in-situ oxidative polymerization of thiophene-based monomers with Cu(ClO 4 ) 2 inside a novolac-based photoresist. The resulting IPNs show conductivities up to 20 S/cm depending on the monomer properties. Among them, 3,3‴-Dihexyl-2,2’:5′,2’’:5″,2‴-quaterthiophene (DH4T) is chosen because it has the largest conjugation length and excellent solubility in organic solvents. Moreover, it renders a low percolation thre…
The Role of Emission Layer Morphology on the Enhanced Performance of Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Quantum Dot-Semiconducting Polymer Hybrids
2016
The influence of the morphology of quantum dot (QD)-semiconducting polymer hybrid emission layers on the performance of quantum dot-based light emitting diodes (QLEDs) is systematically investigated. Chemically grafted QD-semiconducting polymer hybrids are fabricated by the ligand exchange procedure between CdSe/CdxZn1−xS QDs and a new block copolymer consisting of a carbazole-based electroactive block with a low highest occupied molecular orbital level and a disulfide-based anchor block. The performance of QLEDs with hybrid emission layers is compared with QLEDs utilizing QD-only and physically mixed QD/polymer emission layers. It is shown that only in the emission layers formed by chemica…
Novel patternable and conducting metal-polymer nanocomposites: a step towards advanced mutlifunctional materials
2013
In this work, we present a novel patternable conducting nanocomposite containing gold nanoparticles. Here, the in-situ polymerization of 3T is carried out using HAuCl 4 as oxidizing agent inside PMMA as host matrix. During the bake step, the gold salt is also reduced from Au(III) to Au(0) generating Au nanoparticles in the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) system. We found that this novel multifunctional resist shows electrical conductivity and plasmonic properties as well as potential patterning capability provided by the host matrix. The resulting nanocomposite has been investigated by TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Electrical characterization was also conducted for different concentra…
Pressure Effect Studies on the Spin Transition of Microporous 3D Polymer [Fe(pz)Pt(CN)4]
2018
Pressure effects on the spin transition of the three-dimensional (3D) porous coordination polymer {Fe(pz)[Pt(CN)4]} have been investigated in the interval 105 Pa–1.0 GPa through variable-temperature (10–320 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic studies in the visible region at room temperature. These studies have disclosed a different behavior of the compound under pressure. In the magnetic experiments, a temperature independent paramagnetic behavior has been observed under 0.4 GPa. In contrast, at room temperature and at 0.8 GPa, a complete HS-to-LS transition has been evidenced. The differences in the magnetic behavior are strongly related with the porous structure of …
Effective pair potential between charged nanoparticles at high volume fractions
2017
Simulations of charged colloidal dispersions are technically challenging. One possible workaround consists in reducing the system to the colloids only, whose interactions are described through an effective pair potential, wf. Still, the determination of wf is difficult mainly because it depends on the colloidal density, ϕ. Here we propose to calculate wf from simulations of a pair of colloids placed in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions. The variation in ϕ is mimicked by an appropriate change in the concentration of counterions neutralized by an homogeneous background charge. The method is tested at the level of the primitive model. A good description of the structure of the coll…
Cyclodextrin/surfactant inclusion complexes: An integrated view of their thermodynamic and structural properties
2021
Cyclodextrins (CDs) play an important role in self-assembly systems of amphiphiles. The structure of CDs provides distinguished physicochemical properties, including the ability to form host-guest complexes. The complexation affects the properties of guest molecules and can produce supramolecular aggregates with desirable characteristics for fundamental and practical applications. Surfactants are particularly attractive host molecules due to their wide variety, availability, responsiveness to different stimuli, and high relevance in different fields, e.g. medical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The tendency of organization in higher-order supramolecular aggregates arises the…

2011
A supramolecular system based on ketoprofen functionalised CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles and pyrene-modified β-CD was prepared and successfully used for molecular sensing of different analytes. In addition, a strategy for the individual recovery of all the components of the sensing assay is reported.
Dicopper(II) Metallacyclophanes as Multifunctional Magnetic Devices: A Joint Experimental and Computational Study
2015
Metallosupramolecular complexes constitute an important advance in the emerging fields of molecular spintronics and quantum computation and a useful platform in the development of active components of spintronic circuits and quantum computers for applications in information processing and storage. The external control of chemical reactivity (electro- and photochemical) and physical properties (electronic and magnetic) in metallosupramolecular complexes is a current challenge in supramolecular coordination chemistry, which lies at the interface of several other supramolecular disciplines, including electro-, photo-, and magnetochemistry. The specific control of current flow or spin delocaliz…
