Multidentate Polysarcosine-Based Ligands for Water-Soluble Quantum Dots

2016

We describe the synthesis of heterotelechelic polysarcosine polymers and their use as multidentate ligands in the preparation of stable water-soluble quantum dots (QDs). Orthogonally functionalized polysarcosine with amine and dibenzocyclooctyl (DBCO) end groups is obtained by ring-opening polymerization of N-methylglycine N-carboxyanhydride with DBCO amine as initiator. In a first postpolymerization modification step, the future biological activity of the polymeric ligands is adjusted by modification of the amine terminus. Then, in a second postpolymerization modification step, azide functionalized di- and tridentate anchor compounds are introduced to the DBCO terminus of the polysarcosine…

Plasmonic optical sensors printed from Ag–PVA nanoinks

2014

In this paper we report on the use of a nanocomposite based on silver nanoparticles embedded in PVA as a plasmonic optical sensor to detect and quantify trace amounts of amines in gas and water, respectively. The transduction mechanism of the sensor is based on the changes of the LSPR band of Ag NPs when analyte molecules are chemisorbed on their surface. The Ag–PVA sensors are fabricated by means of a high-precision microplotter, a direct-write technology developed for printing materials from solution. The nanoink is formulated with a metal precursor (AgNO3) and a polymer (PVA) using an adequate mixture of solvents to meet the rheological requirements for the fluid dispensing process. The …

Modifying the reactivity of copper (II) by its encapsulation into polydimethylsiloxane: A selective sensor for ephedrine-like compounds

2018

This paper demonstrates that the reactivity of copper (II) can be modified through its entrappment in a polymeric matrix of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which makes possible the reaction into the support instead of in solution. Amino-containing compounds such as amino acids, proteins and sugars, which react with Cu (II) in solution, do not react inside the polymer. As a prove of concept, a highly specific Cu (II) PDMS-based sensor for ephedrines has been developed in this work. When the sensors are put into contact with solutions of these drugs under basic conditions, a change in their color from pale green to purple is observed. This change enables the visual identification of ephedrine (E…

Host-guest interactions for extracting antibiotics with a γ-cyclodextrin poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) hybrid sorbent

2021

Abstract A procedure for the solid-phase extraction of antibiotics (enoxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and sparfloxacin) in water has been developed. The sorbent used is based on a poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) network, whose previously modified surface has been functionalized with γ-cyclodextrin through a click-chemistry reaction. The architecture of the material has been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption, Raman spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, showing good capability to be used as a filler for extraction cartridges. The optimization of the extraction methodology shows good intra-day and inter…

Peptide metal-organic frameworks under pressure: flexible linkers for cooperative compression

2018

We investigate the structural response of a dense peptide metal-organic framework using in situ powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction under high-pressures. Crystals of Zn(GlyTyr)2 show a reversible compression by 13% in volume at 4 GPa that is facilitated by the ability of the peptidic linker to act as a flexible string for a cooperative response of the structure to strain. This structural transformation is controlled by changes to the conformation of the peptide, which enables a bond rearrangement in the coordination sphere of the metal and changes to the strength and directionality of the supramolecular interactions specific to the side chain groups in the dipeptide sequence. Compar…

Melt processing of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene on the water surface

2011

A discotic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene, was oriented by slow cooling from the isotropic phase on a water surface as a film. For melt processing at low temperatures, an HBC derivative with long swallow-tailed alkyl side chains was chosen. The supramolecular organization in the resulting thin layer was investigated by electron microscopy. In high-resolution mode, the structural study showed large domains in which the columnar structures were oriented uniaxially with an edge-on arrangement of the hydrophobic molecules. The length of the stacks exceeded several hundred nanometers without obvious defects. The small-area analysis by TEM allowed the direct visualiz…

Designing conjugated microporous polymers for visible light-promoted photocatalytic carbon–carbon double bond cleavage in aqueous medium

2018

The production of valuable carbonyl compounds directly from alkenes via carbon–carbon double (CC) bond cleavage is a highly important reaction. As a promising alternative to traditional metal-catalyzed thermal reaction conditions, photocatalysis offers an environmentally friendly and sustainable synthetic strategy. However, most photocatalysts used so far were homogeneous, molecular and transition metal-based catalytic systems. Here, we report a structural design strategy of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as a class of metal-free, heterogeneous, stable and reusable photocatalysts for visible light-promoted CC bond cleavage reaction. Via different electron donor and acceptor combinat…

Carbohydrate nanocarriers in biomedical applications: functionalization and construction

2015

The specific targeting of either tumor cells or immune cells in vivo by carefully designed and appropriately surface-functionalized nanocarriers may become an effective therapeutic treatment for a variety of diseases. Carbohydrates, which are prominent biomolecules, have shown their outstanding ability in balancing the biocompatibility, stability, biodegradability, and functionality of nanocarriers. The recent applications of sugar (mono/oligosaccharides and/or polysaccharides) for the development of nanomedicines are summarized in this review, including the application of carbohydrates for the surface-functionalization of various nanocarriers and for the construction of the nanocarrier its…

Fabrication of Single Cylindrical Au-Coated Nanopores with Non-Homogeneous Fixed Charge Distribution Exhibiting High Current Rectifications

2014

We have designed and characterized a cylindrical nanopore that exhibits high electrochemical current rectification ratios at low and intermediate electrolyte concentrations. For this purpose, the track-etched single cylindrical nanopore in polymer membrane is coated with a gold (Au) layer via electroless plating technique. Then, a non-homogeneous fixed charge distribution inside the Au-coated nanopore is obtained by incorporating thiol-terminated uncharged poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains in series to poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PVP) chains, which are positively charged at acidic pH values. The functionalization reaction is checked by measuring the current–voltage (I–V) curves prior …
