Future use of silicon photomultipliers for Kaos at MAMI and P¯ANDA at FAIR

A characterisation of scintillating fibres with silicon photomultiplier read-out was performed in view of their possible application in fibre tracking detector systems. Such a concept is being considered for the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI and as a time-of-flight start detector for the hypernuclear physics programme at the PANDA experiment of the FAIR project. Results on particle detection effciency and time resolution are discussed. In summary, the silicon devices are very suitable for the detection of the low light yield from scintillating fibres insofar a trigger scheme is found to cope with the noise rate characteristics.
Linear Response Theory with finite-range interactions

International audience; This review focuses on the calculation of infinite nuclear matter response functions using phenomenological finite-range interactions, equipped or not with tensor terms. These include Gogny and Nakada families, which are commonly used in the literature. Because of the finite-range, the main technical difficulty stems from the exchange terms of the particle–hole interaction. We first present results based on the so-called Landau and Landau-like approximations of the particle–hole interaction. Shell structure and the fluctuation of the nuclear density distribution

We investigate the relation between the density-fluctuations in nuclei and their description by single-particle models, i.e. the shell model and the Hartree-Fock method; the question is whether every shell-structure necessarily leads to those fluctuations. We demonstrate the flexibility of the single-particle models by constructing a shell-model potential and an effective Hartree-Fock potential, respectively, which produce completely flat distributions without any density fluctuation; this means that “shell structure” is not sufficient an explanation for the fluctuations. Search forBs0→μ+μ−andB0→μ+μ−Decays with CDF II

A search has been performed for B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and B{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decays using 7 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The observed number of B{sup 0} candidates is consistent with background-only expectations and yields an upper limit on the branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}) < 6.0 x 10{sup -9} at 95% confidence level. We observe an excess of B{sub s}{sup 0} candidates. The probability that the background processes alone could produce such an excess or larger is 0.27%. Miniature magnetic devices for laser-based, table-top free-electron lasers

Truly table-top sized radiation sources based on compact laser-plasma accelerators require compact and strong focusing devices and efficient short-period undulators. Complementing our recent theoretical work on the feasibility of a table-top FEL, we here present the design and successful experimental characterizations of a 5 mm period length undulator and miniature quadrupole magnets with field gradients of the order of $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}/\mathrm{m}$.
Thermoactivated spectroscopy of heterovalent impurity traps in CdWO4

Abstract Recombination luminescence emission spectra, TSL and trap spectra estimated by fractional glow technique (FGT), in nominally pure and Li-, Bi- and Ho-doped CdWO4, crystals are reported. According to the investigations by FGT heterovalent impurities Li, Bi and Ho causes localized electronic states which act as traps for charge carriers. It is shown that TSL results in emission of known blue-green luminescence band by emptying of the Li+-related traps in CdWO4-Li and yellow luminescence band by emptying of the Bi3+-related traps in CdWO4-Bi. Drift velocity of free electrons in liquid argon

Abstract A measurement of the drift velocity of free electrons in liquid argon has been performed. Free electrons have been produced by photoelectric effect using laser light in a so-called “laser chamber”. The results on the drift velocity vd are given as a function of the electric field strength in the range 0.5 kV / cm ⩽| E |⩽12.6 kV / cm and the temperature in the range 87 K ⩽T⩽94 K . A global parametrization of v d (| E |,T) has been fitted to the data. A temperature dependence of the electron drift velocity is observed, with a mean value of Δ v d /( Δ T v d )=(−1.72±0.08)%/ K in the range of 87–94 K.
Effects of wave function correlations on scaling violation in quasi-free electron scattering

Abstract The scaling law in quasi-free electron scattering is broken due to the existence of exchange forces, leading to a finite mean value of the scaling variable y . This effect is considerably increased by wave function correlations, in particular by tensor correlations, similar to the case of the photonuclear enhancement factor κ.
Quasi-free electron scattering in a relativistic model of the nucleus

Longitudinal and transverse response functions of quasi-free electron scattering have been calculated in mean field approximation for a relativisticσ-ω model, including non-linearities in theσ-field. As a consequence of the completely consistent and fully relativistic treatment of wave functions and current operators, gauge invariance is perfectly satisfied throughout the calculation. The results indicate that models with the same nuclear bulk properties lead to similar response functions within 10%. In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2012 (ILW1) and 2013-2014 (ILW2) Tritium content in beryllium samples were assessed. Two methods were used to measure tritium content in the samples - dissolution under controlled conditions and tritium thermal desorption.
