Work in the field of BNCT using the Portuguese Research Reactor

1999

Abstract  The goal of this work is to pursue the research activity in BNC and the installation of a therapy facility in the position presently occupied by the thermal column. With these objectives the experimental studies in mice and cells are continuing while improvements in the facilities are created or prepared. For this effect: (1) the installation of lead shield in the vertical access of the thermal column, which resulted in an enhancement of the Φ th toD γ ratio, was performed, (2) the adaptation of a beam tube to deliver a dominantly thermal or epithermal beam in two possible beam openings is being done and (3) Monte Carlo calculations aiming at the optimization of the conditions for…

Geometric Analysis of Type B Aortic Dissections Shows Aortic Remodeling After Intervention Using Multilayer Stents

2020

Recently, multilayer stents for type B aortic dissections (TBAD) have been proposed to decrease false lumen flow, increase and streamline true lumen flow, and retain branch vessel patency. We aimed to provide a protocol with standardized techniques to investigate aortic remodeling of TBAD by multilayer flow modulators (MFM) in static geometric and hemodynamic analyses. Combining existing literature and new insights, a standardized protocol was designed. Using pre- and postoperative CT scans, geometric models were constructed, lumen dimensions were calculated, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were composed, and velocity and pressures were calculated. Sixteen TBAD cases treated with …

Sensitivity Analysis and Effect of Simulation parameters of CPFD Simulation in Fluidized Beds

2018

Fluidized bed technology is broadly applied in industry due to its distinct advantages. CFD simulation of fluidized beds is still challenging compared to single-phase systems and needs extensive validation. Multiphase particle-in-cell is a recently developed lagrangian modeling technique and this work is devoted to analyze the sensitivity of grid size, time step, and model parameters, which are the essences of accurate results. Barracuda VR 17.1.0 commercial CFD package was used in this study. 500µm sand particles and air was used as the bed material and fluidization gas respectively. Five different grids, having 27378, 22176, 16819, 9000 and 6656 computational cells were analysed, where fi…

Neutronic and photonic analysis of the single box water-cooled lithium lead blanket for a DEMO reactor

1998

Abstract The water-cooled Pb–17Li demonstration plant (DEMO) breeding blanket line was selected in 1995 as one of the two EU lines to be further developed in the next decade. In this paper the results of a neutronic and photonic analysis of the `single box' concept is presented. A full three-dimensional model, including the whole assembly and many of the DEMO reactor components, has been developed, together with a three-dimensional neutron source. A tritium breeding ratio (TBR) value of 1.16, with no ports and a Li6 enrichment of 90%, has been obtained and a further analysis has been performed to determine Li6 enrichment that would still ensure tritium breeding self-sufficiency. Selected po…

Effect of Hydrogen and Absence of Passive Layer on Corrosive Properties of Aluminum Alloys

2020

This paper reports the results of research on the effect of hydrogen permeation and the absence of passive layers on the variations in the corrosive properties of aluminum alloys. The study demonstrated that such variations contribute to the deterioration of corrosive properties, which in turn contributes to shortening the reliability time associated with the operation of aluminum alloy structures. The analysis involved structural aluminum alloys: EN AW-1050A, EN AW-5754, and EN AW-6060. It was demonstrated that the absorption of hydrogen by the analyzed alloys led to the shift of the electrode potential to the negative side. The built hydrogen corrosion cells demonstrate in each case the f…

Review on Polymers for Thermoelectric Applications.

2014

In this review, we report the state-of-the-art of polymers in thermoelectricity. Classically, a number of inorganic compounds have been considered as the best thermoelectric materials. Since the prediction of the improvement of the figure of merit by means of electronic confinement in 1993, it has been improved by a factor of 3-4. In the mean time, organic materials, in particular intrinsically conducting polymers, had been considered as competitors of classical thermoelectrics, since their figure of merit has been improved several orders of magnitude in the last few years. We review here the evolution of the figure of merit or the power factor during the last years, and the best candidates…

On the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette body cooling circuit equipped with a liner

2020

Abstract In the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 - “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady-state thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focussed onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit, consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017 and equipped with a liner, whose main function is to protect the underlying vacuum pump CB opening from plasma radiation. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite vo…

A Comprehensive Model for the Auto-Ignition Prediction in Spark Ignition Engines Fueled With Mixtures of Gasoline and Methane-Based Fuel

2018

The introduction of natural gas (NG) in the road transport market is proceeding through bifuel vehicles, which, endowed of a double-injection system, can run either with gasoline or with NG. A third possibility is the simultaneous combustion of NG and gasoline, called double-fuel (DF) combustion: the addition of methane to gasoline allows to run the engine with stoichiometric air even at full load, without knocking phenomena, increasing engine efficiency of about 26% and cutting pollutant emissions by 90%. The introduction of DF combustion into series production vehicles requires, however, proper engine calibration (i.e., determination of DF injection and spark timing maps), a process which…
