State-to-State Quantum Dynamics Calculations of the C plus OH Reaction on the Second Excited Potential Energy Surface

Accurate three-dimensional quantum-mechanical scattering calculations using a time-indepedent hyperspherical method have been performed for the C((3)P) + OH(X(2)Π) → CO(a(3)Π) + H((2)S) reaction on the second excited potential energy surface of 1(4)A″ symmetry. State-to-state reaction probabilities at a total angular momentum J = 0 have been computed in a wide range of collision energies. Many pronounced resonances have been found, espcially at low energy. The product vibrational distributions are noninverted. The present results therefore suggest that the title reaction proceeds via a long-lived intermediate complex. The possibilities of anomalous X-ray scattering for the investigation of semi- or noncrystalline macromolecular structures are discussed on the grounds of the first successful measurements of anomalous scattering of iron in dissolved hemoglobin. As anomalous scattering of this kind of material is limited to the near vicinity of the X-ray absorption edges, the use of synchrotron radiation appears to be obligatory. The anomalous dispersion of the atomic form factors slightly increases with the atomic number. Electrophoretic mobility of electrostatically interacting colloidal spheres

We have measured the electrophoretic mobility μ = vE/E (where E is the electric field strength and vE the electrophoretic velocity) of highly charged colloidal spheres in deionized aqueous suspension at particle number densities n between 0.15 and 150 µm−3. Under these conditions the system exhibits fluid or crystalline order. We used laser Doppler velocimetry to determine the electrophoretic velocities vE as spatially averaged particle velocities from both integral and spatially resolved measurements. Shifting of wrapped phase maps in the frequency domain using a rational number

The number of phase wraps in an image can be either reduced, or completely eliminated, by transforming the image into the frequency domain using a Fourier transform, and then shifting the spectrum towards the origin. After this, the spectrum is transformed back to the spatial domain using the inverse Fourier transform and finally the phase is extracted using the arctangent function. However, it is a common concern that the spectrum can be shifted only by an integer number, meaning that the phase wrap reduction is often not optimal. Abstract In this paper we clarify the quadratic irrationalities that can be admitted by an odd-degree complex irreducible character χ of an arbitrary finite group. Write Q ( χ ) to denote the field generated over the rational numbers by the values of χ, and let d > 1 be a square-free integer. We prove that if Q ( χ ) = Q ( d ) then d ≡ 1 (mod 4) and if Q ( χ ) = Q ( − d ) , then d ≡ 3 (mod 4). This follows from the main result of this paper: either i ∈ Q ( χ ) or Q ( χ ) ⊆ Q ( exp ( 2 π i / m ) ) for some odd integer m ≥ 1 .
Free differential Galois groups

We study the structure of the absolute differential Galois group of a rational function field over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, we relate the behavior of differential embedding problems to the condition that the absolute differential Galois group is free as a proalgebraic group. Building on this, we prove Matzat's freeness conjecture in the case that the field of constants is algebraically closed of countably infinite transcendence degree over the rationals. This is the first known case of the twenty year old conjecture.
Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits

Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C. Compensation of chromatic dispersion for the optical implementation of mathematical transformations has proved to be an important tool in the design of new optical methods for full-color signal processing. A novel approach for designing dispersion-compensated, broadband optical transformers, both Fourier and Fresnel, based on the collimated Fresnel number is introduced. A Rayleigh-Ritz approach for postbuckling analysis of variable angle tow composite stiffened panels

Abstract A Rayleigh-Ritz solution approach for generally restrained multilayered variable angle tow stiffened plates in postbuckling regime is presented. The plate model is based on the first order shear deformation theory and accounts for geometrical nonlinearity through the von Karman’s assumptions. Stiffened plates are modelled as assembly of plate-like elements and penalty techniques are used to join the elements in the assembled structure and to apply the kinematical boundary conditions.
