The rank of random regular digraphs of constant degree

2018

Abstract Let d be a (large) integer. Given n ≥ 2 d , let A n be the adjacency matrix of a random directed d -regular graph on n vertices, with the uniform distribution. We show that the rank of A n is at least n − 1 with probability going to one as n grows to infinity. The proof combines the well known method of simple switchings and a recent result of the authors on delocalization of eigenvectors of A n .

The robust estimation of multivariate location and shape is one of the most challenging problems in statistics and crucial in many application areas. The objective is to find highly efficient, robust, computable and affine equivariant location and covariance matrix estimates. In this paper, three different concepts of multivariate sign and rank are considered and their ability to carry information about the geometry of the underlying distribution (or data cloud) are discussed. The affine equivariant sign covariance matrix: asymptotic behavior and efficiencies

We consider the affine equivariant sign covariance matrix (SCM) introduced by Visuri et al. (J. Statist. Plann. Inference 91 (2000) 557). The population SCM is shown to be proportional to the inverse of the regular covariance matrix. The eigenvectors and standardized eigenvalues of the covariance, matrix can thus be derived from the SCM. We also construct an estimate of the covariance and correlation matrix based on the SCM. The influence functions and limiting distributions of the SCM and its eigenvectors and eigenvalues are found. Limiting efficiencies are given in multivariate normal and t-distribution cases. On the use of asymptotic expansion in computing the null distribution of page's L-statistic

Suppose that each out of n randomized complete blocks is obtained by observing a jointly continuous random variable taking values in Rk. Page's L-statistic is given then as a sum of i.i.d. lattice variables with finite moments of any order. Applying a well-known theorem on asymptotic expansions for the distribution function of such a sum yields higher order approximations to the significance probability of any observed value of L. The formula obtained by discarding terms smaller than o(n –1) is still very simple to use. Symmetrised M-estimators of multivariate scatter

AbstractIn this paper we introduce a family of symmetrised M-estimators of multivariate scatter. These are defined to be M-estimators only computed on pairwise differences of the observed multivariate data. Symmetrised Huber's M-estimator and Dümbgen's estimator serve as our examples. The influence functions of the symmetrised M-functionals are derived and the limiting distributions of the estimators are discussed in the multivariate elliptical case to consider the robustness and efficiency properties of estimators. The symmetrised M-estimators have the important independence property; they can therefore be used to find the independent components in the independent component analysis (ICA).

Abstract In this paper we propose a continuous-time Markov chain to describe the spread of an infective and non-mortal disease into a community numerically limited and subjected to an external infection. We make a numerical simulation that shows tendencies for recurring epidemic outbreaks and for fade-out or extinction of the infection.

On 1-Laplacian Elliptic Equations Modeling Magnetic Resonance Image Rician Denoising

Modeling magnitude Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) rician denoising in a Bayesian or generalized Tikhonov framework using Total Variation (TV) leads naturally to the consideration of nonlinear elliptic equations. These involve the so called $1$-Laplacian operator and special care is needed to properly formulate the problem. The rician statistics of the data are introduced through a singular equation with a reaction term defined in terms of modified first order Bessel functions. Multiple smoothing parameters selection in additive regression quantiles

We propose an iterative algorithm to select the smoothing parameters in additive quantile regression, wherein the functional forms of the covariate effects are unspecified and expressed via B-spline bases with difference penalties on the spline coefficients. The proposed algorithm relies on viewing the penalized coefficients as random effects from the symmetric Laplace distribution, and it turns out to be very efficient and particularly attractive with multiple smooth terms.
