A constructive theory of shape

2021

We formulate a theory of shape valid for objects of arbitrary dimension whose contours are path connected. We apply this theory to the design and modeling of viable trajectories of complex dynamical systems. Infinite families of qualitatively similar shapes are constructed giving as input a finite ordered set of characteristic points (landmarks) and the value of a continuous parameter $\kappa \in (0,\infty)$. We prove that all shapes belonging to the same family are located within the convex hull of the landmarks. The theory is constructive in the sense that it provides a systematic means to build a mathematical model for any shape taken from the physical world. We illustrate this with a va…

R Code for Hausdorff and Simplex Dispersion Orderings in the 2D Case

2010

This paper proposes a software implementation using R of the Hausdorff and simplex dispersion orderings. A copy can be downloaded from http://www.uv.es/~ayala/software/fun-disp.R . The paper provides some examples using the functions exactHausdorff for the Hausdorff dispersion ordering and the function simplex for the simplex dispersion orderings. Some auxiliary functions are commented too.

Enhancement of the Lifetime of Metastable States in Er-Doped Si Nanocrystals by External Colored Noise

2015

The changes in the lifetime of a metastable energy level in Er-doped Si nanocrystals in the presence of an external source of colored noise are analyzed for different values of noise intensity and correlation time. Exciton dynamics is simulated by a set of phenomenological rate equations which take into account all the possible phenomena inherent in the energy states of Si nanocrystals and Er^{3+} ions in the host material of Si oxide. Electronic deexcitation is studied by examining the decay of the initial population of the Er atoms in the first excitation level 4I_{13/2} through fluorescence and cooperative energy transfer upconversion. Our results show that the deexcitation process of th…

Granulometric analysis of corneal endothelium specular images by using a germ–grain model

2007

Specular microscopy is widely used to study the human corneal endothelium status in vivo. In this paper, the corneal endothelium is represented as a binary image composed of the cell inscribed circles. The granulometric distribution function of the complement of this image is used as a functional descriptor, which provides information about the shape, size and spatial arrangement of cells. Experimental evaluation using bootstrap techniques shows its ability to discriminate between controls and pathological cases. It represents a reliable and graphical alternative to the classical indices (cell density, hexagonality and coefficient of variation of cell areas), which behave poorly when detect…

Set Descriptors for Visual Evaluation of Human Corneal Endothelia

2001

Images of corneal endothelium obtained from specular microscopy are of great importance in the evaluation of the corneal endothelium status. Several commercial tools provide some numerical descriptors to characterize these images in terms of cell density, hexagonality, and some descriptive statistics of the cell areas. However, it is a too simple analysis that only detects severe abnormal endothelia with many irregular and large cells. Detection of subtle abnormalities needs a more refined analysis. This paper proposes a shape-size descriptor based on some modified versions of the geometric covariogram. This descriptor is presented as a valid alternative to the classical analysis that provi…

Non-circular rotating beams and CMB experiments

2002

This paper is concerned with small angular scale experiments for the observation of cosmic microwave background anisotropies. In the absence of beam, the effects of partial coverage and pixelisation are disentangled and analyzed (using simulations). Then, appropriate maps involving the CMB signal plus the synchrotron and dust emissions from the Milky Way are simulated, and an asymmetric beam --which turns following different strategies-- is used to smooth the simulated maps. An associated circular beam is defined to estimate the deviations in the angular power spectrum produced by beam asymmetry without rotation and, afterwards, the deviations due to beam rotation are calculated. For a cert…

Beam deconvolution in noisy CMB maps

2003

The subject of this paper is beam deconvolution in small angular scale CMB experiments. The beam effect is reversed using the Jacobi iterative method, which was designed to solved systems of algebraic linear equations. The beam is a non circular one which moves according to the observational strategy. A certain realistic level of Gaussian instrumental noise is assumed. The method applies to small scale CMB experiments in general (cases A and B), but we have put particular attention on Planck mission at 100 GHz (cases C and D). In cases B and D, where noise is present, deconvolution allows to correct the main beam distortion effect and recover the initial angular power spectrum up to the end…

Neutral hydrogen in galaxy clusters: impact of AGN feedback and implications for intensity mapping

2015

By means of zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations we quantify the amount of neutral hydrogen (HI) hosted by groups and clusters of galaxies. Our simulations, which are based on an improved formulation of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), include radiative cooling, star formation, metal enrichment and supernova feedback, and can be split in two different groups, depending on whether feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is turned on or off. Simulations are analyzed to account for HI self-shielding and the presence of molecular hydrogen. We find that the mass in neutral hydrogen of dark matter halos monotonically increases with the halo mass and can be well described by a power-law of th…

Pressure of the hot gas in simulations of galaxy clusters

2016

We analyze the radial pressure profiles, the ICM clumping factor and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) scaling relations of a sample of simulated galaxy clusters and groups identified in a set of hydrodynamical simulations based on an updated version of the TreePM-SPH GADGET-3 code. Three different sets of simulations are performed: the first assumes non-radiative physics, the others include, among other processes, AGN and/or stellar feedback. Our results are analyzed as a function of redshift, ICM physics, cluster mass and cluster cool-coreness or dynamical state. In general, the mean pressure profiles obtained for our sample of groups and clusters show a good agreement with X-ray and SZ observa…

ON the NATURE of HYDROSTATIC EQUILIBRIUM in GALAXY CLUSTERS

2016

In this paper we investigate the level of hydrostatic equilibrium (HE) in the intra-cluster medium of simulated galaxy clusters, extracted from state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulations performed with the Smoothed-Particle-Hydrodynamic code GADGET-3. These simulations include several physical processes, among which stellar and AGN feedback, and have been performed with an improved version of the code that allows for a better description of hydrodynamical instabilities and gas mixing processes. Evaluating the radial balance between the gravitational and hydrodynamical forces, via the gas accelerations generated, we effectively examine the level of HE in every object of the sam…
