Mean Interplanetary Magnetic Field Measurement Using the ARGO-YBJ Experiment

2011

The sun blocks cosmic ray particles from outside the solar system, forming a detectable shadow in the sky map of cosmic rays detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. Because the cosmic ray particles are positive charged, the magnetic field between the sun and the earth deflects them from straight trajectories and results in a shift of the shadow from the true location of the sun. Here we show that the shift measures the intensity of the field which is transported by the solar wind from the sun to the earth.

The polarimetric and helioseismic imager on solar orbiter

2020

This paper describes the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on the Solar Orbiter mission (SO/PHI), the first magnetograph and helioseismology instrument to observe the Sun from outside the Sun-Earth line. It is the key instrument meant to address the top-level science question: How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? SO/PHI will also play an important role in answering the other top-level science questions of Solar Orbiter, as well as hosting the potential of a rich return in further science. SO/PHI measures the Zeeman effect and the Doppler shift in the FeI 617.3nm spectral line. To this end, the instrument carries out narrow-band imaging…

Assessing the MALDI-TOF MS sample preparation procedure to analyze the influence of thermo-oxidative ageing and thermo-mechanical degradation on poly…

2011

[EN] Multiple processing by means of successive injection cycles was used to simulate the thermo-mechanical degradation effects on the oligomeric distribution of PLA under mechanical recycling. Likewise, an accelerated thermal ageing over PLA glass transition was performed in order to simulate its service life. MALDI-TOF MS was used for the analysis and the sample preparation procedure was assessed by means of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE). The quality effects in use for the analysis were signal-to-noise ratio and Resolution. Different matrixes, analyte/matrix proportions and the use of NaTFA as cationization agent were considered. A deep inspection of the statistical results pr…

WORKING CAPITAL AS AN ENTERPRISE VALUE ASSESSMENT TOOL

2019

The valuation of an entity in off-exchange transactions involves the use of different techniques. Nevertheless, none of them guarantees the most accurate result. Therefore, it is very difficult to choose one evaluation method. Both investors, corporate managers, financial professionals, portfolio managers, and securities analysts should have a basic understanding of the process of evaluating companies. To that end, professionals recommend evaluating a company’s financial reports to detect its financial position and solvency. According to the methods of financial analysis, working capital is one of the solvency ratios, which describes the value of resources that remain after the company’s cu…

Thiazolium-based catalysts for the etherification reaction of benzylic alcohols under solvent-free condition

2015

Thiazolium and imidazolium hybrid materials were prepared by radical reactions between a mercaptopropyl-modified SBA-15 mesoporous silica and bis-vinylthiazolium or bis-vinylimidazolium dibromide salts. These hybrid materials were characterized by several techniques and were employed in the etherification reaction of 1-phenylethanol. Solvent-free conditions at 160C under different gas phases (oxygen, air, nitrogen and argon) were used. The thiazolium-based material displayed excellent performances. Further studies were carried out using unsupported thiazolium salts, with or without a methyl group at the C-2 position of the thiazolium moiety. These studies allowed us to propose a reaction me…

Present Status and Future Outlook

2023

Sustainable, modern societies require significant progress toward sustainable technologies, industries, and products. Solvent-free methods, which are of great interest in a vast range of catalyst synthesis, have added value to material manufacturing, and many essential industrial organic synthesis and transformations can offer economically viable alternatives for classical procedures. Moreover, they can modernize classical technologies and organic reactions toward environmental sustainability, making them cleaner, safer, and more efficient. Simultaneously, with proper tailor-made catalyst employment, further noticeable increases in reactivity and selectivity can be expected under mild/short…

Advanced functionality for radio analysis in the Offline software framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory

2011

The advent of the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) necessitates the development of a powerful framework for the analysis of radio measurements of cosmic ray air showers. As AERA performs ‘‘radio- hybrid’’ measurements of air shower radio emission in coincidence with the surface particle detectors and fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the radio analysis functionality had to be incorporated in the existing hybrid analysis solutions for fluorescence and surface detector data. This goal has been achieved in a natural way by extending the existing Auger Offline software framework with radio functionality. In this article, we lay out the design, highlights and features …

A machine learning algorithm for direct detection of axion-like particle domain walls

2021

The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) conducts an experimental search for certain forms of dark matter based on their spatiotemporal signatures imprinted on a global array of synchronized atomic magnetometers. The experiment described here looks for a gradient coupling of axion-like particles (ALPs) with proton spins as a signature of locally dense dark matter objects such as domain walls. In this work, stochastic optimization with machine learning is proposed for use in a search for ALP domain walls based on GNOME data. The validity and reliability of this method were verified using binary classification. The projected sensitivity of this new analy…

Scientific simulations and optimization of the XGIS instrument on board THESEUS

2020

The XGIS (X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer) is one of the three instruments onboard the THESEUS mission (ESA M5, currently in Phase-A). Thanks to its wide field of view and good imaging capabilities, it will efficiently detect and localize gamma-ray bursts and other transients in the 2-150 keV sky, and also provide spectroscopy up to 10 MeV. Its current design has been optimized by means of scientific simulations based on a Monte Carlo model of the instrument coupled to a state-of-the-art description of the populations of long and short GRBs extending to high redshifts. We describe the optimization process that led to the current design of the XGIS, based on two identical units with partial…

Determination of macrolide antibiotics in meat and fish using pressurized liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

2008

We developed a method for determining the quantities of seven macrolide antibiotics in meat and fish by using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (LC-(ESI)MS). The PLE was optimized with regard to solvents, temperature, pressure, extraction time and number of cycles. The optimum conditions were: methanol as the extraction solvent; a temperature of 80 degrees C; a pressure of 1500psi; an extraction time of 15min; 2 cycles; a flush volume of 150% and a purge time of 300s. All recoveries for macrolide antibiotics were over 77% at 200mug/kg, except for erythromycin, which was 58%. The repeatability and reproducibility on d…
