Development of net energy ratio and emission factor for quad-generation pathways

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Energy Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12667-014-0126-4 The conversion of biomass to four different outputs via gasification is a renewable technology that could reduce the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study investigates the energy aspects for a new concept of biomass based quad-generation plant producing power, heat, methanol and methane. Circulating fluidized bed gasifier and the gas technology institute (GTI) gasifier technologies are used for this quad-generation process. Two different biomass feedstocks are considered in this study. The net energy ratio for six diff…

Does plant growth phase determine the response of plants and soil organisms to defoliation?

2005

Abstract To test a hypothesis that the effects of defoliation on plant ecophysiology and soil organisms depend on the timing of defoliation within a growing season, we established a greenhouse experiment using replicated grassland microcosms. Each microcosms was composed of three plant species, Trifolium repens , Plantago lanceolata and Phleum pratense , growing in grassland soil with a diverse soil community. The experiment consisted of two treatment factors—defoliation and plant growth phase (PGP)—in a fully factorial design. Defoliation had two categories, i.e. no trimming or trimming a total of four times at 2 week intervals. The PGP treatment had four categories, i.e. 1, 3, 7 or 13 wee…

Capacity of various organic residues to support adequate earthworm biomass for vermicomposting

1986

We tested the potential of different kinds and combinations of wastes to support the biomass ofEisenia fetida (Sav.) capable of processing a given amount of waste in a period of ca. 1 month. Mixed miscellaneous wastes and activated sewage sludge mixed with or embedded in sieved pine bark showed capacity to maintain the required biomass for a long period. Wastes were converted into odourless castings of good physical structure, provided that a sufficient population was present from the beginning and fresh waste was added regularly. A horizontally working “worm bed compost” was designed instead of the “load-on-top” principle.

Effects of nitrogen enrichment on zooplankton biomass and N:P recycling ratios across a DOC gradient in northern-latitude lakes

2021

AbstractWe used data from whole-lake studies to assess how changes in food quantity (phytoplankton biomass) and quality (phytoplankton community composition, seston C:P and N:P) with N fertilization affect zooplankton biomass, community composition and C:N:P stoichiometry, and their N:P recycling ratio along a gradient in lake DOC concentrations. We found that despite major differences in phytoplankton biomass with DOC (unimodal distributions, especially with N fertilization), no major differences in zooplankton biomass were detectable. Instead, phytoplankton to zooplankton biomass ratios were high, especially at intermediate DOC and after N fertilization, implying low trophic transfer effi…

Dienvidkorejas straujās industrializācijas un modernizācijas seku atspoguļojums Dienvidkorejas literatūrā

2022

Experimental and theoretical insights in the alkene-arene intramolecular π-stacking interaction

2016

Chiral acrylic esters derived from biomass were developed as models to have a better insight in the aryl-vinyl π-stacking interactions. Quantum chemical calculations, NMR studies and experimental evidences demonstrated the presence of equilibriums of at least four different conformations: π-stacked and face-to-edge, each of them in an s-cis/s-trans conformation. The results show that the stabilization produced by the π-π interaction makes the π-stacked conformation predominant in solution and this stabilization is slightly affected by the electron density of the aromatic counterpart. Overexpression of the truncated form of high mobility group a proteins (HMGA2) in human myometrial cells induces leiomyoma-like tissue formation

2014

The pathogenesis of uterine leiomyomas, the most common benign tumor in women, is still unknown. This lack of basic knowledge limits the development of novel non-invasive therapies. Our group has previously demonstrated that leiomyoma side population (SP) cells are present in tumor lesions and act like putative tumor-initiating stemcells in human leiomyoma. Moreover, accumulated evidence demonstrates that these benign tumors of mesenchymal origin are characterized by rearrangements of the High Mobility Group A proteins (HMGA). In this work, we tested the hypothesis that leiomyoma development may be due to overexpression of HMGA2 (encoding high mobility group AT-hook2) in myometrial stem cel…

Green Extraction Strategies for Sea Urchin Waste Valorization

2021

Commonly known as “purple sea urchin,” Paracentrotus lividus occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. This species is a highly appreciated food resource and Italy is the main consumer among the European countries. Gonads are the edible part of the animal but they represent only a small fraction (10–30%) of the entire sea urchin mass, therefore, the majority ends up as waste. Recently, an innovative methodology was successfully developed to obtain high-value collagen from sea urchin by-products to be used for tissue engineering. However, tissues used for the collagen extraction are still a small portion of the sea urchin waste (<20%) and the remaining part, main…

Water need of Energy Crops – one of the environmental problems of Poland

2010

The government policy updates of Poland are presented, showing legal and financial instruments for governing bioenergy developments. The strategy for renewable energy must be co-ordinated with the strategy of water management in the country. The water needs are given for cool climate and extensive agriculture of Central and Eastern Europe which are few times lower than for hotter condition of Southern Europe. Despite this the rain would be not enough for water supply of most of the energy crops.
