Mild processing technologies allow to obtain OJ available year-round, with characteristics closer to those of fresh orange, namely for its content in substances exhibiting free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities. These healthy components, mainly vitamin C, carotenoids and flavonoids, exhibit different absorption kinetics, bioavailability and antiradical mechanisms. Assessment of Agricultural Options Available for Saving Orange Cultivation in Ribera Baixa (Valencia, Spain)

Orange cropping has been in practice in Ribera Baixa (Valencia, Spain) for several centuries. During the past decade, orange cropping has been under severe economic stress arising from increasing competition from less-costly foreign imports. Consequently, farm-gate prices are depressed, under the regime of fixed percentage distribution of retail pricing. Orange groves are being abandoned in many instances. A practicable and sustainable solution to this persistent economic problem would require a re-structuring of the marketing system to facilitate the sales of organic products and introduction of organic growing practices for oranges as well as secondary organic tree crops.

Effects of PET packaging on the quality of an orange juice made from concentrate

An orange juice made from concentrate was conditioned in three different PET (PolyEthylene Terephtalate) and glass packagings. Influence of storage conditions (length of storage, light, oxygen) on vitamin C content, browning index, and colour were measured. Results show that permeability to oxygen of PET packagings is the major factor detrimentally affecting the above parameters.

To deter predator attack, aposematic prey species advertise their unprofitability with one or more conspicuous warning signals that, in turn, enhance the avoidance learning of predators. We studied the costs and benefits of multicomponent signalling in Parasemia plantaginis moths. The hairy moth larvae have an orange patch on their otherwise black bodies. PKSP-dependent reduction of phagolysosome fusion and intracellular kill of Aspergillus fumigatus conidia by human monocyte-derived macrophages.

Summary Previously, we described the isolation of an Aspergillus fumigatus mutant producing non-pigmented conidia, as a result of a defective polyketide synthase gene, pksP (polyketide synthase involved in pigment biosynthesis). The virulence of the pksP mutant was attenuated in a murine animal infection model and its conidia showed enhanced susceptibility towards damage by monocytes in vitro. Efficient orange light-emitting electrochemical cells

We report the first bis-cyclometalated cationic iridium(III) complex with N-aryl-substituted 1H-imidazo [4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline. The complex emits yellow-orange phosphorescence with a maximum at 583 nm, a quantum yield of 43%, and an excited-state lifetime of 910 ns in argon-saturated dichloromethane. Optimized orange light-emitting electrochemical cells with the new Ir(III) complex exhibit fast turn-on, a peak luminance of 684 cd m(-2) and a peak efficacy of 6.5 cd A(-1); in 850 h of continuous operation their luminance and efficacy decrease only by 20%.

Detection and correction of interferences in spectroscopy techniques

By combining the apparent content curves method and the Youden method, we have developed a strategy for detecting constant and proportional errors in spectroscopy techniques. A method for elimination of spectral interferences (different of blank) is also proposed. To apply of this method there must be a matrix effect that varies with the amount of sample or a simulated matrix effect provided working under different experimental conditions that induce a variation of the analytical signal of the analyte. The proposed procedures have been applied to the determination of methyl orange in presence of phenol red, bromothymol blue and bromocresol purple.
