A novel series of C-3 substituted 4,6-dichloroindole-2-carboxylic acids was synthesized to investigate the influence of different hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor groups at this specific position on the affinity to the glycine site of the NMDA receptor. These novel 3-indolylmethyl derivatives with ring-open (amines, sulfonamides, amides, ureas) and cyclic substituents (imidazolidin-2-ones, (thio)hydantoins) led to the discovery that compounds bearing a hydantoin substituent at the C-3 position of the indole nucleus are the most promising ones. Changes in CD4+ cells’ miRNA expression following exposure to HIV-1

Background: Micro RNAs (miRNAs) inhibit HIV-1 expression by either modulating host innate immunity or by directly interfering with viral mRNAs. Here, we investigated the miRNA profile that discriminates different classes of HIV-1-infected patients from multiple-exposed uninfected individuals. Methods: The expression levels of 377 miRNAs were selectively analysed in CD4+ cells isolated from whole blood of HIV-1 elite LTNP (eLTNP), naive, and multiply exposed uninfected individuals (MEUs). Snapshots of the Formation of NaTi3O6(OH)·2H2O Nanowires: A Time-Resolved XRD/HRTEM Study

Layered titanates are important intermediates during the formation of TiO2-related nanostructures in hot concentrated base solution. Microwave-assisted hydrothermal techniques allow a time-resolved ex-situ analysis of the reaction in one-minute intervals by rapid heating and quenching followed by separation and structure analysis of the intermediates. By a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) the individual stages of the reaction could be identified. One replies here to partisans of the reject of the supply-driven model in input-output analysis and especially to A. Torre (Revue Economique, 5, 44, 951-970). First of all, demand-driven hypothesis (Leontief) and supply-driven hypothesis (Ghosh) are symmetrical and incompatible, what forbidden to reject the second to the motive that it depends on the first. Secondly, the results earlier obtained for France of 1970 to 1985 from the method of the biproportionnal filter show that there is so much instability in the long term in the columns than in the rows of the flow matrix. Thirdly, the assimilation of the usage of allocation coefficients to the adoption of the supply-side model is excessive.

Przymierzom biblijnym często towarzyszyły znaki, np. tęcza (Rdz 9,12–17), krew cielców (Wj 24,3–8) czy też chleb i wino (Łk 22,19–20). Zewnętrznym znakiem przymierza, jakie Bóg zawarł z Abrahamem, było obrzezanie (Rdz 17,9–14). Obrzęd ten został zaniedbany podczas czterdziestoletniej wędrówki przez pustynię. Jednak po przejściu Jordanu JHWH upomniał się o ten znak. The role of the substantia nigra in the control of amygdaloid paroxysmal activity.

AbstractBoth in acute and chronic cats, focal paroxysmal activity evoked in the ventro-basal complex of the amygdala has been inhibited by substantia nigra conditioning stimulation, to a greater extent, than by caudate nucleus activation. Injection of kainic acid into substantia nigra resulted in the disappearance of the caudate inhibition. It is suggested that the final control, exerted by the striatum on the amygdaloid seizures, occurs by means of the substantia nigra.

Multicolor upconversion luminescence of GdVO4:Ln3+/Yb3+ (Ln3+ = Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Ho3+/Er3+/Tm3+) nanorods

Lanthanide-doped GdVO4 nanorods that exhibit upconversion emission under 982 nm excitation have been prepared by a facile room-temperature chemical co-precipitation method followed by a subsequent annealing at temperatures of 600 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C. Multicolor upconversion emission, including white, was achieved by tuning the concentrations of dopant lanthanide ions (Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+) in GdVO4. It is found that four GdVO4 samples emit light with the white chromaticity coordinates of (0.326, 0.339), (0.346, 0.343), (0.323, 0327) and (0.342, 0.340) respectively, under a single-wavelength NIR excitation. Abstract Na2Ni(phenobarbiturato)4·3H2O, Na2Ni3(phenobarbiturato)2(OH)6·4H2O, and NaZn(phenobarbiturato)2(OH)·H2O derivatives were prepared from Ni(II) and Zn(II) and phenobarbital. The Na2Ni(phenobarbiturato)4·3H2O complex is diamagnetic and isostructural with the complex previously reported, Na2Cu(phenobarbiturato)4, suggesting a square-planar environment around the Ni(II) ion. The DMF solutions of this complex show the existence of two species. The EPR spectra of the Cu(II) doped complex show the hyperfine and superhyperfine structures. The covalence parameters α2, β2, and δ2 show a strong bonding in the equatorial plane and suggests the formation of a [CuN4] chromophore. The anticonvulsa…

pH distributions in spontaneous and isotransplanted rat tumours.

Spontaneous mammary tumours of the rat with various degrees of malignancy exhibit similar tissue pH distributions. The mean pH (+/- s.d.) of dysplasia is 7.05 +/- 0.20. In benign tumours the mean pH is 6.95 +/- 0.19 and in malignant tumours it is 6.94 +/- 0.19. In contrast, tumours with the same degree of malignancy but different histologies show different pH distributions. Benign tumours with a higher percentage of fibrous tissue exhibit less acidic pH values than those with larger portions of epithelial cells (delta pH = 0.38 pH units).
