Experimental quantum entanglement and teleportation by tuning remote spatial indistinguishability of independent photons.

2020

Quantitative control of spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems as a direct quantum resource at distant sites has not yet been experimentally proven. We design a setup capable of tuning remote spatial indistinguishability of two independent photons by individually adjusting their spatial distribution in two distant regions, leading to polarization entanglement from uncorrelated photons. This is achieved by spatially localized operations and classical communication on photons that meet only at the detectors. The amount of entanglement depends uniquely on the degree of spatial indistinguishability, quantified by an entropic measure I , which enables teleportation with fidelities …

Electronic States, Absorption Spectrum and Circular Dichroism Spectrum of the Photosynthetic Bacterial LH2 Antenna of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila as …

1999

A new approach that uses a combination of semiempirical configuration interaction method and exciton theory to calculate electronic energies, eigenstates, absorption spectrum and circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of the LH2 antenna of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila is introduced. A statistical simulation that uses experimental homogeneous line widths was used to account for the inhomogeneous line width of the observed spectrum. Including the effect of orbital overlap of the close-lying pigments of the B850 ring and the effect of the pigment protein interaction in the B800 ring allowed a successful simulation of the experimental absorption and CD spectra of the antenna at room temperature. Two e…

Electronic coupling responsible for energy transfer in columnar liquid crystals

1999

Electronic coupling is the driving force for energy transfer in molecular materials and consists of several components. We determine the strength of dipolarrmultipolar coupling and coupling due to orbital overlap for excitation transport in triphenylene columnar liquid crystals. We use time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and computer simulations. The fit of the experimental and simulated fluorescence decays reveals that the transfer process is dominated by short range interactions .multipolar and orbital overlap but the contribution of long range dipolar interactions cannot be neglected. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. A statistical analysis of the three-fold evolution of genomic compression through frame overlaps in prokaryotes

2007

Abstract Background Among microbial genomes, genetic information is frequently compressed, exploiting redundancies in the genetic code in order to store information in overlapping genes. We investigate the length, phase and orientation properties of overlap in 58 prokaryotic species evaluating neutral and selective mechanisms of evolution. Results Using a variety of statistical null models we find patterns of compressive coding that can not be explained purely in terms of the selective processes favoring genome minimization or translational coupling. The distribution of overlap lengths follows a fat-tailed distribution, in which a significant proportion of overlaps are in excess of 100 base…

Res…

Turbulent heat transfer in spacer-filled channels: Experimental and computational study and selection of turbulence models

2019

Abstract Heat transfer in spacer-filled channels of the kind used in Membrane Distillation was studied in the Reynolds number range 100–2000, encompassing both steady laminar and early-turbulent flow conditions. Experimental data, including distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient h, were obtained by Liquid Crystal Thermography and Digital Image Processing. Alternative turbulence models, both of first order (k-e, RNG k-e, k-ω, BSL k-ω, SST k-ω) and of second order (LRR RS, SSG RS, ω RS, BSL RS), were tested for their ability to predict measured distributions and mean values of h. The best agreement with the experimental results was provided by first-order ω-based models able to …

Is There Anything New to Say About SIFT Matching?

2020

SIFT is a classical hand-crafted, histogram-based descriptor that has deeply influenced research on image matching for more than a decade. In this paper, a critical review of the aspects that affect SIFT matching performance is carried out, and novel descriptor design strategies are introduced and individually evaluated. These encompass quantization, binarization and hierarchical cascade filtering as means to reduce data storage and increase matching efficiency, with no significant loss of accuracy. An original contextual matching strategy based on a symmetrical variant of the usual nearest-neighbor ratio is discussed as well, that can increase the discriminative power of any descriptor. Th…

Development of reading and arithmetic skills across Grades 1 to 4 in two groups of children receiving part-time special education

2021

This study investigated why some Finnish students receive part-time special education in Grade 1, duration of that support, and its relation to student reading fluency, reading comprehension, and arithmetic fluency development. The participants included two groups from Grade 1 receiving part-time special education (1–2 years vs. 3–4 years) and a control group comprising the remaining participants from the study. Teachers identified reading and expressive language difficulties as the main reasons for part-time special education in Grade 1. By Grade 4, students who received support until Grade 1 or 2 caught up the level of the control group especially in reading fluency. Students who had rece…

Integrating Retirement and Long-Term Care (LTC) Annuities Using a Notional Defined Contribution (NDC) Framework

2014

This paper examines the possibility of embedding public long-term care (LTC) insurance within the retirement pension system, i.e. introducing life care annuities (LCAs) into a notional defined contribution (NDC) framework. To do this we develop a multistate overlapping generations model (MOLG) that includes the so-called survivor dividend and give special attention to the assumptions made about mortality rates for dependent persons and LTC incidence rates, which largely determine the contribution rate assigned to LTC. The proposed model could be of interest to policymakers because it could be implemented without too much difficulty, it would universalize LTC coverage with a "fixed" cost, an…
