Synthesis of iodobiaryls and dibenzofurans by direct coupling at BDD anodes.
2014
The first direct oxidative phenol-arene cross-coupling reactions of an iodine-containing guaiacol derivative and the possible over-oxidation products of electron-rich phenols are described. Hereby, a "green" and targeted synthesis for dibenzofurans was developed.

Glyphosate-based herbicide has soil-mediated effects on potato glycoalkaloids and oxidative status of a potato pest
2020
Glyphosate is the most used herbicide worldwide, targeting physiological pathways in plants. Recent studies have shown that glyphosate can also cause toxic effects in animals. We investigated the glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH)-induced changes in potato (Solanum tuberosum) plant chemistry and the effects of a GBH on the survival rate and oxidative status of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). The beetles were reared on potato plants grown in pots containing soil treated with a GBH (Roundup Gold, 450 g/l) or untreated soil (water control). The 2nd instar larvae were introduced to the potato plants and then collected in 2 phases: as 4th instar larvae and as adults. The ma…
Detection of oxidative mutagenesis by isoniazid and other hydrazine derivatives in Escherichia coli WP2 tester strain IC203, deficient in OxyR: stron…
1998
Abstract Strain IC203, deficient in the OxyR function, was sensitive to both cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of isoniazid (INH) whereas its parent, WP2 uvrA /pKM101, was resistant to these effects. Four other hydrazine compounds, hydrazine hydrate (HZH), phenylhydrazine (PHZ), hydralazine (HLZ) and nialamide (NLD), were mutagenic in WP2 uvrA /pKM101. Increases in mutagenicity were observed in IC203 for HZH and PHZ but not for HLZ and NLD. Growth inhibition zones by HZH, PHZ and NLD were larger in IC203 than in WP2 uvrA /pKM101. The enhancements in the effects of INH, HZH and PHZ in IC203 with respect to its oxyR + parent are considered to be caused by the production of reactive oxygen speci…
Mitochondrial redox signaling: Interaction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species with other sources of oxidative stress.
2014
Significance: Oxidative stress is a well established hallmark of cardiovascular disease and there is strong evidence for a causal role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) therein. Recent Advances: Improvement of cardiovascular complications by genetic deletion of RONS producing enzymes and overexpression of RONS degrading enzymes proved the involvement of these species in cardiovascular disease at a molecular level. Vice versa, overexpression of RONS producing enzymes as well as deletion of antioxidant enzymes was demonstrated to aggravate cardiovascular complications. Critical Issues: With the present overview we present and discuss different pathways how mitochondrial RONS inte…
Oxidation of melatonin by oxoferryl hemoglobin: A mechanistic study
2002
Reaction of melatonin with the hypervalent iron centre of oxoferryl hemoglobin, produced in aqueous solution from methemoglobin and H2O2, has been investigated at 37 degrees C and pH 7.4, by absorption spectroscopy. The reaction results in reduction of the oxoferryl moiety with formation of a heme-ferric containing hemoprotein. Stopped-flow spectrophotometric measurements provide evidence that the reduction of oxoferryl-Hb by melatonin is first-order in oxoferryl-Hb and first-order in melatonin. The bimolecular reaction constant at pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C is 112 +/- 1.0 M(-1) s(-1). Two major oxidation products from melatonin have been found by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy: the cycl…
Enhancement of Nitro Reduction in Rat Liver Microsomes by Haemin and Haemoproteins
1978
1. Reductive metabolism of p-nitrobenzoic acid and neoprontosil in rat liver microsomes was studied in the presence of haemin, haemoglobin and myoglobin. 2. Microsomal nitro reduction is enhanced 4-fold in the presence of haemoglobin, whereas azo reduction is not affected. 3. Microsomal nitro reduction is enhanced to a similar extent by haemoglobin, haemin and boiled haemoglobin, whereas myoglobin is about half as active. 4. Maximal enhancement of microsomal nitro reductase activity by haemoglobin is achieved at high substrate concentration (6 mM) and low microsomal protein concentration (0.5--1.0 mg/ml). 5. Control microsomal nitro reduction as well as the haemoglobin-enhanced microsomal n…
Oxidation resistance of LDL is correlated with vitamin E status in beta-thalassemia intermedia.
1998
The alteration of the oxidant/antioxidant balance may affect the susceptibility of low density lipoproteins (LDL) to oxidation in haemolytic disorders such as thalassemia. Thirty patients affected by beta-thalassemia intermedia were examined, and compared with age-matched healthy controls. The mean amount of vitamin E in the thalassemic LDL was lower than control (p0.0001), either when it was calculated on the base of LDL protein (61% decrease) or cholesterol (25% decrease). The LDL resistance to Cu2+-induced oxidation, evaluated as the length of the lag phase before the onset of conjugated diene (CD) lipid hydroperoxide production, was 20% lower than control. Other parameters of LDL suscep…
Selective photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde by polymeric carbon nitride-hydrogen peroxide adduct
2018
Abstract Polymeric carbon nitride-hydrogen peroxide adduct (PCN-H2O2) has been prepared, thoroughly characterised and its application for selective photocatalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde (FDC) in aqueous suspension has been studied. The PCN-H2O2 adduct is stable in aqueous suspension under UV and solar irradiation up to 100 °C. It is also stable up to 200 °C if heated in air, while at temperatures close to 300 °C its decomposition takes place. Based on the obtained characterisation data it has been proposed that H2O2 attaches to the non-polymerised carbon nitride species and to the heptazine nitrogen atoms, thus producing strong hydrogen bond…
