Measurement of inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy with the ATLAS detector

2011

Jet cross sections have been measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 17 nb−1 recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. The anti-k t algorithm is used to identify jets, with two jet resolution parameters, R=0.4 and 0.6. The dominant uncertainty comes from the jet energy scale, which is determined to within 7% for central jets above 60 GeV transverse momentum. Inclusive single-jet differential cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse momentum and rapidity. Dijet cross sections are presented as functions of dijet mass and the angular variable χ. The res…

Measurements of isomeric yield ratios of fission products from proton-induced fission on natU and 232Th via direct ion counting

2017

Independent isomeric yield ratios (IYR) of 81Ge, 96Y, 97Y, 97Nb, 128Sn and 130Sn have been determined in the 25 MeV proton-induced fission of natU and 232Th. The measurements were performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the University of Jyväskylä. A direct ion counting measurement of the isomeric fission yield ratios was accomplished for the first time, registering the fission products in less than a second after their production. In addition, the IYRs of natU were measured by means of γ-spectroscopy in order to verify the consistency of the recently upgraded experimental setup. From the obtained results, indications of a dependence of the production rate …

Critical reflections on asymptotically safe gravity

2020

Asymptotic safety is a theoretical proposal for the ultraviolet completion of quantum field theories, in particular for quantum gravity. Significant progress on this program has led to a first characterization of the Reuter fixed point. Further advancement in our understanding of the nature of quantum spacetime requires addressing a number of open questions and challenges. Here, we aim at providing a critical reflection on the state of the art in the asymptotic safety program, specifying and elaborating on open questions of both technical and conceptual nature. We also point out systematic pathways, in various stages of practical implementation, towards answering them. Finally, we also take…

Complete Measurement of the Λ Electromagnetic Form Factors.

2019

The exclusive process e+e−→ΛΛ¯, with Λ→pπ− and Λ¯→p¯π+, has been studied at s=2.396 GeV for measurement of the timelike Λ electric and magnetic form factors, GE and GM. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 66.9 pb−1, was collected with the BESIII detector for this purpose. A multidimensional analysis with a complete decomposition of the spin structure of the reaction enables a determination of the modulus of the ratio R=|GE/GM| and, for the first time for any baryon, the relative phase ΔΦ=ΦE−ΦM. The resulting values are R=0.96±0.14(stat)±0.02(syst) and ΔΦ=37°±12°(stat)±6°(syst), respectively. These are obtained using the recently established and most precise value of …

Polarization Observables in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

1992

The electrodisintegration of the deuteron with polarized beam and target is investigated. The additional polarization form factors (inclusive reaction) and structure functions (exclusive reaction) are discussed. The sensitivity of these form factors and structure functions to the potential model, to meson and isobar degrees of freedom, and to electromagnetic form factors is studied in different kinematical regions.

Double Polarization Observables in η Electroproduction

2009

Abstract A new measurement of beam-recoil double-polarization observables in η electroproduction at the A1 collaboration at MAMI is presented. The energy region of the S 11 ( 1525 ) resonance was covered at a four-momentum transfer of Q 2 = 0.1 GeV 2 / c 2 . It turned out, that the usual interpretation of the reaction mechanism via S 11 and D 13 resonance fails to explain the relative phase between the corresponding multipole amplitudes tested by this experiment, while the new data are still in good agreement with previous measurements.

T- and P-asymmetries in the (γ, π−) reaction on 13C and 15N

1995

Abstract A simultaneous theoretical analysis of the polarization observables for negative pion photoproduction off the 13 C and 15 N nuclei is performed. A sensitivity of the target and recoil asymmetries to different ingredients of the theory (the Fermi motion, the final state interaction and the nuclear model input) is investigated. The importance of the high (2 hω ) configurations in the nuclea ground states is shown.

Measurement of trilinear gauge couplings in e(+)e(-) collisions at 161 GeV and 172 GeV

1998

Trilinear gauge boson couplings are measured using data taken by DELPHI at 161 GeV and 172 GeV, Values for WWV couplings (V = Z,gamma) are determined from a study of the reactions e(+)e(-) --> W+W- and e(+)e(-) --> We nu, using differential distributions from the WW final state in which one W decays hadronically and the other leptonically, and total cross, section data from other channels, Limits are also derived on neutral ZV gamma couplings from an analysis of the reaction e(+)e(-) --> gamma + invisible particles. General Multipole Expansion of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

2002

Formal expressions are derived for the multipole expansion of the structure functions of a general polarization observable of exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron using a longitudinally polarized beam and/or an oriented target. This allows one to exhibit explicitly the angular dependence of the structure functions by expanding them in terms of the small rotation matrices $d^j_{m'm}(\theta)$, whose coefficients are given in terms of the electromagnetic multipole matrix elements. Furthermore, explicit expressions for the coefficients of the angular distributions of the differential cross section including multipoles up to $L_{max}=3$ are listed in tabular form.
