Traumatic experiences in childhood and psychopathy: a study on a sample of violent offenders from Italy

2013

Background: The link between early traumatic experiences of abuse/neglect and criminal behaviour has been widely demonstrated. Less is known, however, about the relationship between these experiences and the development of psychopathic personality. Objective: This study investigated childhood relational trauma in a group of violent offenders from Italy. We hypothesised a higher level of early relational trauma associated with higher scores on psychopathy. Method: Twenty-two offenders convicted for violent crimes aged 22-60 (M=38, SD=11) participated in this study. Participants were selected by the Italian justice system for an experimental research programme aiming at the evaluation of psyc…

Comparison of the greenhouse gas emissions of a high-rise residential building assessed with different national LCA approaches– IEA EBC Annex 72

2020

Introduction: The international research project IEA EBC Annex 72 investigates the life cycle related environmental impacts caused by buildings. The project aims inter alia to harmonise LCA approaches on buildings. Methods: To identify major commonalities and discrepancies among national LCA approaches, reference buildings were defined to present and compare the national approaches. A residential high-rise building located in Tianjin, China, was selected as one of the reference buildings. The main construction elements are reinforced concrete shear walls, beams and floor slabs. The building has an energy reference area of 4566 m2 and an operational heating energy demand of 250 MJ/m2a. An ex…

Chemical composition and anticancer activity of essential oils of Mediterranean sage (Salvia officinalis L.) grown in different environmental conditi…

2013

Salvia officinalis L. can be found worldwide and its leaves are commonly used as ingredient in food industry. Sage essential oil is applied in the treatment of a range of diseases and has been shown to possess different biological activities. The objectives of our research were to study the effects of environment on crop, chemical composition and anticancer activity on S. officinalis essential oil. Sage was cultivated at eighteen experimental sites in south-central Italy (Molise) in different growing environments. The essential oils (S1-S18), extracted by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by GC and CG/MS. Results show that the main components were α-thujone, camphor, borneol, γ-muurolene and…

Chemical and behavioural characterization of the rabbit mammary pheromone.

2003

Mammals owe part of their evolutionary success to the harmonious exchanges of information, energy and immunity between females and their offspring. This functional reciprocity is vital for the survival and normal development of infants, and for the inclusive fitness of parents. It is best seen in the intense exchanges taking place around the mother's offering of, and the infant's quest for, milk. All mammalian females have evolved behavioural and sensory methods of stimulating and guiding their inexperienced newborns to their mammae, whereas newborns have coevolved means to respond to them efficiently. Among these cues, maternal odours have repeatedly been shown to be involved, but the chem…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coffee brew samples: analytical method by GC-MS, profile, levels and sources.

2009

Roasting is a crucial step for the production of coffee, as it enables the development of color, aroma, and flavor, which are essential for the characterization of the coffee quality. At the same time, roasting may lead to the formation of not desirable compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this paper, we report a method for PAHs determination in coffee brew, based on saponification and liquid-liquid extraction with small volumes of hexane, with exclusion of further processes of purification since we analyze the extract by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detectors in the single ion monitoring mode (SIM). The total concentration of the 28 compounds investi…

Eradicating Mosquitoes using Translocations

1969

CHROMOSOMAL translocations have been suggested1,2 as useful mechanisms for genetic control: translocation heterozygotes produce fewer offspring because some of their gametes do not receive a full chromosomal complement. The resultant semisterility has been observed in many plants and animals, chiefly after irradiation or other treatments of laboratory stocks but only rarely in natural populations. Spontaneous translocations originating in a field population are usually eliminated3 quickly because of the lower productivity they confer on the heterozygotes. They can become fixed in all members of a population only if it is small and isolated4.

Circostanze del reato e tutela del minore

2020

Optimized Multipactor-Resistant Wedge-Shaped Waveguide Bandpass Filters

2013

[EN] Wedge-shaped waveguides present a certain advantage with respect to rectangular waveguides regarding their resistance to multipactor discharges. In this paper, the optimal configuration for the wedge geometry is investigated based on theoretical results, on a precise multipactor prediction tool, and on previous experience. In addition, design rules are presented, which allow us to achieve for wedge-shaped filters electrical performances comparable to the ones of rectangular waveguide filters, while at the same time improving the multipactor-free power range. As a proof of concept, two three-pole bandpass filters with equivalent electrical characteristic of 150-MHz bandwidth, centered a…

Fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy to understand the interactions between cyclodextrins and α-galactosidase from green coffee beans

2017

Abstract The potential of fluorescence measurement and circular dichroism spectroscopy (CDSP) to evaluate the interaction between cyclodextrins (CDs) (CD cavity size, concentration, pH, reaction time, and temperature as well as different side chain groups) and α-galactosidase was evaluated. A strong relationship was observed between α-galactosidase fluorescence intensity and CD cavity size, concentration, pH, reaction time, and temperature as well as different side chain groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that fluorescence intensity measurement can be a promising tool to ascertain β-CD-α-galactosidase interactions. CDSP is also an interesting tool to understand β-CD-α-galactosidase inte…
