Agent defocusing in two-participant clauses in Finnish Sign Language

This article investigates what strategies are used for defocusing the agent in two-participant clauses in FinSL. The question is approached by analyzing a set of data that consists of videotaped informational texts. Several strategies for agent defocusing were found. First, the agent can simply be omitted. Second, the agent can be expressed with a pronominal pointing sign used non-referentially. Pronominal pointing signs that can be used non-referentially include at least the non-first person plural pronominal pointing sign and the first person singular pointing sign, possibly also the first person plural pointing sign. This paper discusses the idea that the gap regarding the dowry in Gaius’ Institutes is due to the fact that Gaius intentionally did not deal with this subject because he considered it as 'ius singulare' and that this omission was filled in by a 'liber singularis' outside the Institutes. The existence of a "didactic system" made up of the Gaius’ Institutes and four 'libri singulares' for the classical age of Roman Law is also disputed.

Engaging in unhealthy behaviors (e.g., smoking, drinking) and not engaging in healthy ones (e.g., exercising, consuming fruit and vegetables) are both relatively prevalent among individuals despite the available information about their risks for health. People’s perception of an event’s time course can be used to gauge their risk perception for that event thus casting light on any possible misperception and suggesting directions for health-promoting interventions.
