Automated Soil Moisture Monitoring Wireless Sensor Network for Long-Term Cal/Val Applications
2012
The design and development of a wireless sensor network for soil moisture measurement in an unlevelled 10 km × 10 km area, is described. It was specifically deployed for the characterization of a reference area, in campaigns of calibration and validation of the space mission SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), but the system is easily extensible to monitor other climatic or environmental variables, as well as to other regions of ecological interest. The network consists of a number of automatic measurement stations, strategically placed following soil homogeneity and land uses criteria. Every station includes acquisition, conditioning and communication systems. The electronics are batt…
The "Laparoscopic Neuro-Navigation" -- LANN: from a functional cartography of the pelvic autonomous neurosystem to a new field of laparoscopic surgery
2006
It is the objective of this study to etablish the technique of laparoscopic exposure of all pelvic somatic and autonomous nerves. In all our patients who underwent a laparoscopic surgical approach of the retroperitoneum, exposure and assessment of the exposed nerves using laparoscopic neuro-navigation were performed. Laparoscopic surgery allows the surgical approach to all pelvic nerves, particularly to the sciatic nerve, the pudendal nerve and the splanchnic pelvic nerves. We describe a cartography of the functional anatomy of the pelvic plexus and elaborate on the concept of "laparoscopic pelvic functional surgery". © 2004 Taylor & Francis.
Evolution and Learning: Evolving Sensors in a Simple MDP Environment
2003
Natural intelligence and autonomous agents face difficulties when acting in information-dense environments. Assailed by a multitude of stimuli they have to make sense of the inflow of information, filtering and processing what is necessary, but discarding that which is unimportant. This paper aims at investigating the interactions between evolution of the sensorial channel extracting the information from the environment and the simultaneous individual adaptation of agent-control. Our particular goal is to study the influence of learning on the evolution of sensors, with learning duration being the tunable parameter. A genetic algorithm governs the evolution of sensors appropriate for the a…
Accountability for crimes committed by autonomous weapon systems under international criminal law
2022
With conventional weapons a human is responsible for the target selection and the pulling of the trigger. In contrast to this, AWS themselves are responsible for these tasks. The contemporary framework of International Law regulating this problem focuses on the conventional weapons and the human operator behind them. This thesis is trying to partake in the solution of the following legal problem: if the current International Criminal Law-framework sufficiently regulates accountability for proscribed acts committed by Autonomous Weapon Systems. To achieve this the thesis focuses on the research question: Which individual would be held accountable for proscribed acts committed by Autonomous W…
Local uniqueness of the solutions for a singularly perturbed nonlinear nonautonomous transmission problem
2020
Abstract We consider the Laplace equation in a domain of R n , n ≥ 3 , with a small inclusion of size ϵ . On the boundary of the inclusion we define a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission condition. For ϵ small enough one can prove that the problem has solutions. In this paper, we study the local uniqueness of such solutions.
Local Capacity $H_{\infty}$ Control for Production Networks of Autonomous Work Systems With Time-Varying Delays
2010
This paper considers the problem of local capacity H∞ control for a class of production networks of autonomous work systems with time-varying delays in the capacity changes. The system under consideration is modeled in a discrete-time singular form. Attention is focused on the design of a controller gain for the local capacity adjustments which maintains the work-in-progress (WIP) in each work system in the vicinity of planned levels and guarantees the asymptotic stability of the system and reduces the effect of the disturbance input on the controlled output to a prescribed level. In terms of a matrix inequality, a sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is presented using …
A new fuzzy robust dynamic controller for autonomous vehicles with nonholonomic constraints
2005
Abstract In this paper a novel algorithm with a dynamic fuzzy controller applied to the control of trajectory of vehicles with two independent wheels is proposed. An automatic control of trajectory of a vehicle can behave in a not efficient way. It is necessary to consider the friction of the actuators and possible perturbations coming from the outside environment, as for instance the variable characteristics of the ground where the vehicle moves. These perturbations, which depend also on the contact between the wheel and the ground, involve violations of nonholonomic constraints. Thus it is necessary to compensate for these perturbations to obtain a robust control system. The controller sy…
Smart River : Towards Efficient Cooperative Autonomous Inland Navigation
2022
In recent years, inland waterway transport has witnessed increasing attention from France and many European countries. However, this mode of transport lacks flexibility, has an aging infrastructure, and the current ships are not adapted to an increase in transport capacity ensuring the safety of vessels and goods as well as reliable and constant delivery times. Therefore, inland transport must go through an organizational and technical renovation specific to its particular environment in order to hope to compete with land transport. In this thesis, we propose developing a smart river ecosystem that focuses on three principal axes: (i) automatic inland infrastructure, (ii) autonomous inland s…
Texturing of Indium Phosphide for Improving the Characteristics of Space Solar Cells
2021
This paper discusses and demonstrates the usefulness and prospects of using textured layers of indium phosphide as a material for space solar cells. Such designs improve the performance of the photovoltaic converter by increasing the effective area and surface roughness. Thus, it minimizes the background reflectivity of the surface. Textured layers on the InP surface were obtained by electrochemical etching using a bromous acid solution.
A Binary Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm for a Double Auction Market
2007
In this paper, we shall show the design of a multi-unit double auction (MDA) market. It should be enough robust, flexible and sufficiently efficient in facilitating exchanges. In a MDA market, sellers and buyers submit respectively asks and bids. A trade is made if a buyers bid exceeds a sellers ask. A sellers ask may match several buyers bids and a buyers bid may satisfy several sellers asks. The trading rule of a market defines the organization, information exchange process, trading procedure and clearance rules of the market. The mechanism is announced before the opening of the market so that every agent knows how the market will operate in advance. These autonomous agents pursue their o…
