Detection and fluorescence imaging of biologic systems requires the implementation of efficient, robust and easy-to-use tools. Conventional fluorogenic probes currently used in microbiology lack efficiency since they are based on the single chemical modification of a fluorophore bearing an optically tunable reactive group, which often leads to incomplete fluorescence quenching. Abstract The interaction of monocationic quinine with zwitterionic dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and mixed negatively-charged dimyristoylphosphatidyl glycerol (DMPG) DMPC small unilamellar vesicles in the liquid-crystalline phase was investigated by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy at pH 7 and 37°C. The maximum fluorescence emission peak at 383 nm, upon excitation at 335 nm, shifts to lower wavelength and decreases its intensity as the ratio between the total lipid and quinine concentrations increases. Para ello se utilizan dos métodos cuantitativos basados en la difracción de rayos X, el método de Rietveld y un método sin estándar. Los resultados obtenidos por difracción rayos X de estos materiales policristalinos se comparan con los correspondientes análisis químicos y la composición normativa calculada. Few studies have addressed to date the interaction between sex and diabetes mellitus (DM) in the prognosis of elderly patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). Our aim was to address the role of DM in the prognosis of non-selected elderly patients with NSTEACS according to sex. A retrospective analysis from 11 Spanish NSTEACS registries was conducted, including patients aged ≥70 years. The primary end point was one-year all-cause mortality. Background: Procalcitonin (PCT) is an established biomarker for the diagnosis of sepsis. Evidence is growing that PCT concentration correlates with the extent of atherosclerosis and prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods and Results: A total of 2,131 patients with CAD were followed up for a median of 3.6 years. During follow-up, death from cardiovascular causes was registered in 95 patients and non-fatal myocardial infarction in 85 patients. Median and quartile 1 and 3 are reported for PCT concentration. High-resolution real-time sonography was performed in 15 cases of clinically and chemically suspected primary hyperparathyroidism and in 20 patients with different thyroid nodules. The suspected enlarged parathyroid glands and the thyroid nodules were percutaneously punctured under sonographic control. Concentrations of parathyroid hormone, human thyroglobulin, and human calcitonin were measured in the aspirate, and immunocytology was performed. The mean concentration of the aspirated parathyroid hormone in the parathyroid glands was 4,013.6 pmol/l +/- 4,519 (SD) as compared with 14.9 pmol/l +/- 8.7 in the thyroid nodules.
