Advance booking across channels: The effects on dynamic pricing

2021

This research analyzes the effects of advance booking and channel type on hotel rates. While this relationship has been addressed in the literature, most studies take a partial approach by focusing only on one distribution channel or one destination. This study fills this gap by analyzing the price dynamics for four channels and multiple destinations. The data set consists of 39,363 bookings for 1085 hotels over 27 consecutive months. We used two-stage least squares to solve potential endogeneity issues, and the results proved that distribution channel, hotel type and hotel size have an influence on the effect of advance booking on hotel rates. Critical managerial implications are discussed…

On the importance of perspective and flexibility for efficiency measurement: effects on the ranking of decision-making units

2017

[EN] The efficiency of a firm can be assessed from several perspectives and using a variety of methodologies. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is one of the most commonly used methodologies. Conventional DEA analyses or models allow one to classify decision-making units (DMUs) into efficient and inefficient ones based on their efficiency scores, which could also be used for ranking DMUs; however, such rankings generally show many ties. Super-efficiency DEA analyses have been proposed to address the tie issue. On the other hand, conventional DEA analyses only take account of a single perspective in estimating efficiency scores. Cross-efficiency DEA analyses provide an alternative that takes a…

Instability Resistance Training Across the Exercise Continuum

2013

Context: Instability resistance training (IRT; unstable surfaces and devices to strengthen the core or trunk muscles) is popular in fitness training facilities. Objective: To examine contradictory IRT recommendations for health enthusiasts and rehabilitation. Data Sources: A literature search was performed using MEDLINE, SPORT Discus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases from 1990 to 2012. Study Selection: Databases were searched using key terms, including “balance,” “stability,” “instability,” “resistance training,” “core,” “trunk,” and “functional performance.” Additionally, relevant articles were extracted from reference lists. Data Extraction: To be included, rese…

The Non-monetary Benefits of Education

2000

An algorithm for simulating end-user behaviour in a real time pricing market

2015

The energy market has changed radically over the last decade, mainly due to an increased penetration of renewable energies. Now the end users have directly access to the energy market and can actively take part to the electricity market. Electricity customers can indeed modify their behavior through Demand Response, namely by means of pricing strategies that support a change in the end-users habits. This can be accomplished through a 'loads aggregator', a third party that collects the requests and signals for Active Demand-based services coming from the markets and the different actors of energy market. This paper describes a simulation framework to generate the simulated optimal behavior o…

A Rule-Based Multi-agent System for Road Traffic Management

2009

Road Traffic presents a high dynamism which makes necessary the development of traffic management and control strategies to improve traffic flows and more important, road safety. This dynamism makes necessary the use of intelligent systems to support traffic organizations and road operators to cope with incidents. In this paper we introduce a new expert system to support traffic management when weather problems occur in the road network. The system uses multiagent technology to work with the specific characteristics of traffic domain and is able to work in two modes: a) coordinately, where all the agents works to solve problems in large networks and b) locally where due to communications pr…

Opportunities and pitfalls related to e-commerce strategies in small-medium firms: A system dynamics approach

2002

E-commerce is often perceived as a powerful lever to foster growth of SMEs. However, both the literature and empirical evidence have shown the perils hidden in superficial decision making by SME entrepreneurs. A system dynamics (SD) approach is used in this article to demonstrate how managing processes of accumulation and depletion of strategic assets, detecting inertial effects of decisions made in the past, and selectively acting on policy levers are likely to help entrepreneurs in understanding opportunities and pitfalls related to e-commerce strategies. A feedback analysis of three case studies selected from the literature and the main findings from a survey conducted by the authors on …

A genetic algorithm for analyzing choice behavior with mixed decision strategies

2009

In the field of decision-making a fundamental problem is how to uncover people's choice behavior. While choices them- selves are often observable, our underlying decision strategies determining these choices are not entirely understood. Previous research defined a number of decision strategies and conjectured that people do not apply only one strategy but switch strategies during the decision process. To the best of our knowledge, empirical evidence for the latter conjecture is missing. This is why we monitored the purchase decisions 624 consumers shopping online. We study how many of the observed choices can be explained by the existing strategies in their pure form, how many decisions can…

Visualization practices in Scandinavian newsrooms : a qualitative study

2017

The visualization of numeric data is becoming an important element in journalism, and new tools and platforms make the development of data visualization in the news discourse accelerate. In this paper we present an interview study investigating this development in Scandinavian newsrooms. Editorial leaders, data journalists, graphic designers, and developers in 10 major news organizations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark inform the study on a range of issues concerning visual practices and experiences in the newsrooms. Elements of tension are revealed on issues concerning the role and effect of complex, exploratory data visualizations and concerning the role of ordinary journalists in the produ…
