Time-dependent Landauer-Büttiker formula: Application to transient dynamics in graphene nanoribbons
2014
In this work we develop a time-dependent extension of the Landauer-B\"uttiker approach to study transient dynamics in time-dependent quantum transport through molecular junctions. A key feature of the approach is that it provides a closed integral expression for the time-dependence of the density matrix of the molecular junction after switch-on of a bias or gate potential which can be evaluated without the necessity of propagating individual single-particle orbitals. This allows for the study of time-dependent transport in large molecular systems coupled to wide band leads. As an application of the formalism we study the transient dynamics of zigzag and armchair graphene nanoribbons of diff…
Continuous-Variable Tomography of Solitary Electrons
2019
A method for characterising the wave-function of freely-propagating particles would provide a useful tool for developing quantum-information technologies with single electronic excitations. Previous continuous-variable quantum tomography techniques developed to analyse electronic excitations in the energy-time domain have been limited to energies close to the Fermi level. We show that a wide-band tomography of single-particle distributions is possible using energy-time filtering and that the Wigner representation of the mixed-state density matrix can be reconstructed for solitary electrons emitted by an on-demand single-electron source. These are highly localised distributions, isolated fro…
Reversible pH-induced fluorescence colour change of gold nanoclusters based on pH-regulated surface interactions.
2019
To prepare water-dispersible, biocompatible, ratiometric pH nanosensors is challenging. We report here for the first time that the emission colour of NAD+-capped AuNCs responds to the mono-/bidentate anchoring of the phosphoric groups of the ligand. The AuNCs exhibit a high luminescence (21% quantum yield) and an outstanding performance as fluorescent ratiometric pH sensors over a broad pH range.
Adsorption mechanism of arsenate by zirconyl-functionalized activated carbon
2007
Arsenate [As(V)] and arsenite [As(III)] sorption at the solid-water interface of activated carbon impregnated with zirconyl nitrate (Zr-AC) was investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and surface complexation modeling. The XAS data at the Zr K-edge suggest that the structure of the zirconyl nitrate coating is built from chains of edge-sharing ZrO8 trigonal dodecahedra bound to each other through two double hydroxyl bridges. The 8-fold coordination of each Zr atom is completed by four O atoms, which share a bit less than the two theoretically possible bidentate nitrate groups. On impregnation, two of the O atoms may lose their nitrate group and be transformed to hydroxyl group…
Unconventional Fluorescence Quenching in Naphthalimide-Capped CdSe/ZnS Nanoparticles
2013
Core–shell (CS) CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) capped with ligands that possess a mercapto or an amino group and a naphthalimide (NI) as chromophore unit, linked by a short ethylene chain (CS@S–NI and CS@H2N–NI, respectively), have been synthesized and fully characterized by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and voltammetry as well as by steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopies. The organic ligands HS–NI and H2N–NI act as bidentate ligands, thereby causing a drastic decrease in the QD emission. This was particularly evident in the case of CS@S–NI. This behavior has been compared with that of commercially availabl…
Remote Modification of Bidentate Phosphane Ligands Controlling the Photonic Properties in Their Complexes: Enhanced Performance of [Cu(RN‐xantphos)(N…
2020
A series of copper(I) complexes of the type [Cu(HN-xantphos)(N^N)][PF6] and [Cu(BnN-xantphos)(N^N)][PF6], in which N^N = bpy, Mebpy and Me2bpy, HN-xantphos = 4,6-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-10H-phenoxazine and BnN-xantphos = 10-benzyl-4,6-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-10H-phenoxazine is described. The single crystal structures of [Cu(HN-xantphos)(Mebpy)][PF6] and [Cu(BnN-xantphos)(Me2bpy)][PF6] confirm the presence of N^N and P^P chelating ligands with the copper(I) atoms in distorted coordination environments. Solution electrochemical and photophysical properties of the BnN-xantphos-containing compounds (for which the highest-occupied molecular orbital is located on the phenoxazine moiety) are repor…
Life Cycle Assessment of a compact Desiccant Evaporative Cooling system: The case study of the “Freescoo”
2016
Abstract The paper aims at exploring the performances of a compact Desiccant Evaporative Cooling system called “Freescoo” (Free Solar Cooling) in comparison to standard conventional technologies. The Freescoo – that aims at applications in the residential sector and in small office buildings and includes a photovoltaic–thermal system – is analyzed, its monitored performance discussed and reported: under cooling conditions an Energy Efficiency Ratio of 12.8 is calculated, that reaches 50.7 if also photovoltaic generation is considered. To assess the performance of the proposed system a Life Cycle Assessment study was performed to investigate the system covering all its life, from the product…
White-light phosphorescence emission from a single molecule: application to OLED.
2009
A simple mononuclear cyclometallated iridium(III) complex exhibits white photo- and electro- luminescence in the wavelength range from 440 to 800 nm, which originates from a single emitting excited state of mixed character. Optical recognition and removal of Hg(II) using a new self-chemosensor based on a modified amino-functionalized Al-MOF
2017
Abstract We developed a simple self-chemical optical sensor for the monitoring and removal of ultra-trace levels of Hg(II) from aqueous media. The development of this sensor was based on the covalent attachment of amino-functionalized aluminum-based MOF particles with ninhydrin. The new sensor is densely coated with a chelating ligand to permit an ultra-fast, selective, pH-dependent visualization for removal of Hg(II) with detection limit (LOD∼0.494 μg L−1). Monitoring was accomplished via both a colorimetric signal visible to the naked eye as well as UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. Digital image-based colorimetric analysis has also used as a semi-quantitative analysis for determination the…
SiPM as miniaturised optical biosensor for DNA-microarray applications
2015
A miniaturized optical biosensor for low-level fluorescence emitted by DNA strands labelled with CY5 is showed. Aim of this work is to demonstrate that a Si-based photodetector, having a low noise and a high sensitivity, can replace traditional detection systems in DNA-microarray applications. The photodetector used is a photomultiplier (SiPM), with 25 pixels. It exhibits a higher sensitivity than commercial optical readers and we experimentally found a detection limit for spotted dried samples of ∼1 nM. We measured the fluorescence signal in different operating conditions (angle of analysis, fluorophores concentrations, solution volumes and support). Once fixed the angle of analysis, for s…
